Prologue:Purpose and Theme
Proverbs 1:1-7 Is pretty straight forward, it is simply telling the reader as clearly as possible what the purpose of studying Solomon's Proverb is. A basic intro, but also a warning, "1:7 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline."
Keep in mind that, at least to me and many others, Wisdom is defined as thinking and living according to God. Only through him may one find true peace and happiness. All other paths to peace are temporary, unfortunately for most of the world.
Exhortations to Embrace Wisdom
Proverbs 1:8-9 reminds the believer of the fifth commandment from God of honoring your parents. It goes further to tell the reader that these will not only help you, but they will become a decoration for your spirit. I beautiful necklace declaring your obedience in respecting your parents.
Proverbs 1:10-19 Warns against falling into the temptation, and often exciting, lifestyle of sin. It warns of those who will promise you riches if only you harm your neighbor to claim their possessions for your own. It tells of how, though these people feel satisfied and content with harming others for their own gain, it can and will quickly lead to their own death and destruction.
It goes as far as to warn you to not even set a foot unto their paths, that is how dangerous this evil can be. It is a reminder to choose your friends wisely and be sure that those who influence you are those who will help you grow spiritually and emotionally. "Proverbs 27:17 as iron sharpens iron, so one believer sharpens the other"
Warning against Rejecting Wisdom
Proverbs 1:20-21 It makes it very VERY clear that Wisdom does NOT hide from us and gives us every opportunity to accept her teachings.
Proverbs 1:22-23 I personally think these two passages must be recognized more. It again shows that if you simply accept the teachings of Wisdom she will not hesitate in giving you knowledge and happiness. Wisdom does not hide her face in any way. This addresses the issue people bring up of "What if someone never hears the word of God?" as God can and will reveal himself personally to every human on this Earth at some point in their life. He gives us each a personal choice, whether we realize it or not, to accept or reject his love. According to an excerpt from 1 Samuel 2:30 "...Those who honor me I will honor, but those who despise me will be disdained" God goes by many names, and while a person may not call our God by the same name, it does not mean that person does not honor the same God as we do.
Proverbs 1:24-27 Wisdom will NOT cry out forever. There will come a day when our opportunity for such a thing will leave us.
Proverbs 1:28-33 The Holy Word makes it painfully clear that we will eat the fruit of our labors. We will sow what we reap. We will pay the price after death for our acts here on Earth, whether that be good or evil. From a Bad root comes bad fruits, but from the Good root comes good fruits. This passage just reaffirms God's position on our decisions and free will.
