“Excellent eye you have there…” Matai smiled ambiguously at her, “The barrette is just a measly 3,000G. It’s quite an old piece I have there, so I assure that the price is more than fair for such a thing.” Well, it was cursed with something, so perhaps it was very overpriced all things considered. But she didn’t know that. Hell, it could be a good curse for all he knew. Not that he wanted it to be a good curse. Good curses weren’t fun to watch at all.
That is a pretty good price, Alisa thought as she stared at the jewelry. After regarding the piece for a moment she raised her eyes to meet the man’s one.
Smiling she said, “I’ll take it~” She pulled out her coin purse, counting out the amount of money and handing it over. She didn’t have the slightest clue of the man’s dubious nature. Nor was she aware of what would be in store for her due to this one purchase...
“Thank you so much,” Alisa said once the transaction was finished and the barrette in her hands. She couldn’t wait to put it in her hair.

Matai smiled easily as he sat behind his booth, letting his items sit in plain view. He had decided to set up a booth with some of the items that had been collecting dust on his ship. All cursed items, of course. Not that he would tell anyone that they were cursed in the slightest. Buyer beware, right? He wasn’t even sure what the curses were aside from the fact that they were indeed cursed. At least according to the more magically enabled members of his crew.
Someone approached his booth and he grinned at them, “See anything that catches your eye?”
Alisa wandered around the different booths wondering if she should get herself something or maybe some gifts? It had been a while since she treated herself to something nice, though. Maybe one item. That should be enough.
So, she perused the booths carefully, doing her best to sort out which item exactly would be the best suited. After about half an hour of wandering around an antique barrette caught her eye. It was gold with white crystals. Delicate, simple, and elegant. She could easily see herself wearing it day to day even with her hair so short.
She then heard the man’s greeting and she looked up to see a man with an eye patch, but a friendly smile. She returned the gesture as she said, “Yes, actually. How much for the barrette?” Alisa pointed out the object.
Alisa was already at the orphanage and working before the sun had crested over the horizon. After all someone had to be there to make the kids breakfast. They deserved home-cooked meals just like anyone else. Besides, Alisa knew how much it meant to wake up to the smell of something delicious when she lost her parents. It reminded her that the house wasn’t empty--even if her heart felt like it was.
So, there she stood in the kitchen, preparing the ingredients to make the grand spread of bacon, eggs, toast and pancakes. There was a peaceful tranquility of the morning as she worked. The silence only broken by the occasional cupboard opening, utensils colliding, and birds chirping outside the windows.
But soon she heard someone else enter the kitchen. Alisa turned wondering if it would be a child or another employee. Familiar blue hair was the first thing she noticed and she smiled. The two of them had passed by one another before, but neither had spent much one on one time. There was always work that needed to be done.
“Good morning, Vishnal,” she greeted pleasantly, “Mind helping me get breakfast ready?”
The bar was a welcome reprieve from the cold, but she wasn’t very thrilled to be there in the first place. It wasn’t that drinking was bad per se, but the environment made her feel uneasy. Vulnerable. Like walking to close to the edge of the abyss. Being so close to temptation a small trip and you’d fall into a bottomless pit.
She kept to herself as she walked directly towards the bar, feeling as if everyone had their eyes on her though she knew that couldn’t be the case. What if someone recognized her there? What would they think? What would they say? Alisa had to remind herself that their thoughts and opinions were their own and she should only be concerned with the Goddess’ opinion of her. Surely She knew her intentions were pure, right?
“Um, excuse me,” she said to the bartender once she approached the bar. He stood a bit taller than herself, black hair with faint signs of peppering near his temples and contrasting light eyes. “I had an order for a specific wine, Door to Heaven?”
Alisa felt a little silly and wholly like she may be making a mistake. This was the first time she’d stepped foot into a bar. She probably stuck out like a sore thumb. Hopefully she could just get in and out quickly.
Celia blinked, hesitantly accepting the answer. She tilted her head, looking at the woman in the tree and then out towards the view. She supposed the view was nice from up there…but what about other places on the island? There were surely better places to get a good view. Though, honestly, Celia wasn’t one to talk about the views of Arcadia, considering she had only been there for a couple years.
“Oh, I just wanted to take a walk around,” Celia answered politely, “The island’s beautiful with all this snow, isn’t it?”
Alisa smiled down at the woman, though it was probably a little hard to see. “It’s gorgeous. It’s like the world is covered in a wool blanket,” she responded before she realized their distance wasn’t a very good position to be having a conversation.
“Ah, it’s a little hard to talk like this, huh? I’ll be down in one moment!” she called out before shimmying her way down the tree. It took a little bit, but the descent was made much faster halfway through when a branch snapped beneath her weight. Alisa’s eyes went wide as she felt herself being pulled to the earth. He mittened hand slipping from her hold.
Then she was falling.
All she could see were the tangle of barren branches with the backdrop of the clouded sky. Her hands were still outstretched as she tilted backwards. She felt fear pierce her heart along with familiarity. Almost as if she’d fallen like this before.
A couple seconds later she landed with a PUMF! Below the tree she landed in a snowbank, lying on her back as if she were going to make a snow angel, but the wind was knocked out of her chest.
There had been dozens of customers coming into the Gardens. Licorice had been doing a lot of work there and soon was hoping to get out and do some field research soon. Spring was near and she was more than excited to finally get it going. Even though she loved the gardens, doing so many tours and working so long in it would have to change for research soon. But she was readying to end the winter with a fun few weeks with tours.
Soon she saw a woman walking in with religious garb. Perhaps she knew Gerard. She walked up to the stranger and smiled at her.
“Good afternoon. Welcome to the gardens. I’m Licorice, the owner. How may I help you?” She asked curiously, giving her a soft bow as a greeting.
Alisa strolled towards the botanical gardens with a leisurely gate and smile on her face. She always enjoyed being surrounded by nature’s beauty. It was the Goddess’ creations after all. And what better place to see them all than the gardens?
She was almost too preoccupied with her excitement she didn’t notice the woman approaching her. The woman bowed with her pleasantries and Alisa smiled in return.
“Thank you. I’m Alisa, it’s a pleasure,” she said, “I was hoping to tour through some of the gardens. I’ve heard there’s been a number of expansions recently.”

The Angelic Layer Word Count: 1,646 Aurelia & Alisa It was another quiet day at Celestia Church. Aurelia was sweeping, as usual--to do her best to clear out her thoughts by doing something productive. It wasn't helping much lately, unfortunately. The woman knew she had her mind focused on t...
It wasn’t often when Celia went out for walks around Arcadia, but she always enjoyed them. So, the next time she had a day off from both of the farms, she decided to go again, just to take in the island of Arcadian in the middle of winter. With a thick coat over a thick dress, she felt as good as she could be as she walked a path through the snow.
Eventually, Celia made it to the outer line of the forest, admiring the snow-covered branches with a small smile. While there wasn’t much going on in the middle of winter, it still looked nice. However, her eyes fell quickly on a figure in the trees, shadowed by the shadow of the mountain.
“Hello…?” Celia hesitantly called out as she made eye contact with the figure in the tree, “What are you…doing up there?”
Alisa was on another one of her adventures. She strayed a good ways away from the church that day. She didn’t want to run into Aurelia or Gerard this time. Instead she wanted to focus on self-reflection. Thus her walk through the forest was filled with only her thoughts and the crunch of snow beneath her boots.
As the end of the treeline came in view she stared up at the open sky peaking through the barren branches and got an idea. She searched for the healthiest and stable looking tree. She stood at the base for a moment, staring up at it’s slightly swaying branches debating if it was such a good idea.
‘I won’t go that far up,’ she told herself, ‘I’ll be fine.’ Then she started to climb.
After several minutes she managed to get about twenty feet off the ground before perching on a branch. Her breath was labored and she could see puffs of mist each time. But her eyes were transfixed to the sky. She was closer to the heavens up here. Maybe if she tried hard enough she could reach it--
A voice interrupted her solitude. Alisa stared at her outstretched hand for a moment before letting it drop to her side and look down at the woman who addressed her.
“I love the view from up here,” Alisa called down to her, unsure of what else to really say. “Warm sun and wind in my ear.” If I listen closely to it could I hear Her whispering to me?
“What about yourself?” Alisa asked with genuine curiosity, “You’re a bit far off the beaten path.”
Well his Valentines day went just peachy. Not a single chick wanted to chat with him, why was everyone that was out tonight taken? Oh right, probably because it’s the day for couples to go out and be together, duh.
“Uhg,” Kasey huffed and plucked the olive from his margarita off with his teeth, chomping on it in a highly unnamed fashion. “I don’ understand what’s wrong with me?”
Finn slowly floated down, plopping himself on his head. “It’s alright Kasey, you’ll find someone, probably a really sweet, nice girl that’ll show you some good manners.”
Brown eyes turned to slits. “Very funny Finn,” he huffed under his breath, attempting to flick the toothpick towards the trash, only to miss and jab into someone’s back.
“Oh fuck.”
The last place Alisa expected to be on Valentine’s day was the bar.
It wasn’t her first choice by any means--it really wasn’t a choice she’d ever make. Her sole purpose being there was to pick up a specific brand of wine for the church. It was pretty rare so the grocery stores didn’t typically have it in stock. Nor was it typical for Alisa to pick up the order. That was usually left to another member.
So, there she stood at the end of the bar, waiting for an employee to bring her the bottles of special wine and looking extremely uncomfortable and out of place albeit minding her own business. At least, she was until she felt a sharp stab in her back that made her start.
“Ouch!” she said, turning around to see what happened. No one was near her, but a man was staring at her with an expression she’d seen far too many times: guilt.
Alisa climbed down the ladder to look up at her handiwork from ground level. She stood a couple yards from the church entrance, hands on her hips, and a satisfied smile on her face. Across the top of the doors hung a large banner with painted letters:
Alisa couldn’t believe how much attraction the Pelago Arms Tournament received. There were scores of people signing up to participate in senseless violence. And even more going to simply watch and cheer on the blood and gore. It was sickening to think about, honestly. Especially when it brought along certain memories...
Now, Alisa wasn’t naive when it came to violence. Nature was full of it. But in nature it wasn’t sport; it’s a necessity to live. A singular part in the great circle of life. But it was the premeditated assaults that horrified her. The echos of gunshots and screams still haunted her despite the gruesome event happening over a decade prior. Sometimes she could still see the red on her hands.
How could anyone willfully be a part of that?
A shudder ran down her spine as she shook her head which now displayed a grim expression, the smile gone from her face. She picked up the ladder, intent on putting in away, all the while wondering where Sister Aurelia and Father Gerard were.
@gun-nun & @quicksilverzen mentions!
(Plus the church is going to look different after they return from the tournament. Ha!)
Stu, despite the scolding he’d gotten from his sister last night about wandering off by himself, was currently wandering the streets of Arcadia, a stupid grin on his face. He could have caught bugs on Leuda, but the bugs on Arcadia were so much cooler and often bigger. They would make much more of an impact than the little weird bugs on Leuda.
Stu was walking without bending his knees, grinning all the while at his goofy march. He was getting ready to head into the forest when he felt someone walk up behind him.
“Yeeees?” He asked, using his best cute little boy voice as he turned to face them.
Alisa could spy a child up to no good a mile away. She had a keen sense for this kind of thing--something that had only been honed more while working at the orphanage. While walking with her arms full of groceries she saw an unfamiliar boy walking proudly with a 100 watt smile on his face. Definitely up to something.
She matched her pace to his own, looking down at him with a half smile, “You looked like you were having such a great time I thought I’d join you.” Alisa glanced around to see if anyone was with the boy. A parent or guardian? But no one seemed to be paying him any much attention save for herself.
[ A story of why Alisa took home a frog from this mini game. ]
Alisa loved to take little “adventures” around Arcadia. She’d wander around the outdoors, usually favoring the woods. Being surrounded by nature helped her feel closer to the Harvest Goddess--sometimes more so than being at the church. It helped give her perspective on the good the Goddess provided their world. The beauty that was filled within it if you knew where to look.
On these adventures, Alisa would find little trinkets or oddities that she could sell later as well. It helped bring in a little money and the church could always use contributions. Especially with Gerard making renovations to the orphanage. Every little bit could help and if Alisa wasn’t helping then she didn’t rightly deserve to be in Her service, let alone live under Her roof.
RIBBIT. RIBBIT.
Alisa paused at Her pond. She’d come to pay her respects--as she did every morning--but the closeness of the sound caught her off guard. Raising her head she looked to her left. Atop a log was a spotted frog that was staring straight at her.
The two sat in silence for a moment before Alisa spoke, “Are you praying to the Goddess, too?”
RIBBIT.
A small smile crossed Alisa’s face. She wondered what he would pray to the Goddess about. A good meal? A safe home? A princess to kiss him? The frog then jumped right at Alisa, interrupting her thoughts. She flinched, unsure of his trajectory, but he landed perfectly in her lap. A chuckle escaped her mouth at the chances of it.
“You want to come home with me?” she asked. It didn’t look at her, but stayed on her lap contently. She figured it must be a sign. “I’ll name you... Prince Charming.”
