The thing that’s so wonderful about Elementary is that it *does* the whole “Sherlock Holmes, rude misanthropic genius” schtick, but it DOESN’T STOP THERE. Sherlock IS a rude misanthropic genius, but he IS also capable of deep love, and he WORKS HARD to express it for the people he loves! It is incredibly endearing to watch Sherlock cook lasagna for Watson, advise her of the optimal temperature to eat it, and then sit stiffly next to her prepared to lockjaw his way silently through an entire Knicks game bc he WANTS TO BE GOOD TO HER. He takes pains to precisely and clearly communicate his support for her choices, even if she chooses to be away from him!

And IT JUST MAKES ME SO WARM about Sherlock, because despite how Sherlock claims that he is ONLY soft for Watson, Sherlock is genuinely *becoming a better person* as the show progresses by forming relationships with Captain Gregson, with Marcus, with Alfredo, with Kitty! “Misanthropy was so easy,” Sherlock mourns once, and I LOVE THAT LINE bc yes! It IS easier to just make Sherlock a rude ass misanthropist and nothing more! It’s HARD for him to open up! But he makes the fucking effort, because it is worth it and the show continually reinforces that.

Different fictional detectives response to the ‘scratched iPhone equals alcoholic’ bit

Holmes (Elementary): after a long diatribe about not outing alcoholics/addicts and a weird aside about winding old watches, he explains that his tortoise Clyde gets at it sometimes.

Shawn Spencer (Psych): Shawn has never put his phone on a charger at more than 10% battery. More often, he is ‘borrowing’ others chargers and struggling to put the plug in as he is in the midst of watching a random video and the phone is actively dying.

Columbo: “well you see, I work late a lot, you know, justice never sleeps. But you know who does? My wife. She needs her beauty sleep, so I try not to wake her when I come in after she’s gone to bed. Luckily, my wife can sleep through pretty much any noise, so that’s not an issue. But she can’t abide by light, so I’ve gotta plug in my phone with the lights off! That’ll scratch it right up, let me tell you. Anyway, I just have one more question…”

Elementary s1 e13, the red team, is so good because it’s the opposite of Sherlock. Sherlock has this message of “he thinks he’s special, and he’s right, so everyone should appreciate that and respect him”

This episode of elementary says “he thinks he’s special, and he’s right, but his self-centered attitude hurts people and makes him untrustworthy to the point where even people he cares about don’t feel like they know who he is, and in the long run, it’s going to be detrimental to everyone involved if he doesn’t change”

my favourite part of this is how she takes the scalpel. she GRABS it in his hand and YANKS. miss, this is a very sharp blade, and you know that cause you've used plenty of them. he pissed her off so much that she forgot basic safety, and i know we like to think their relationship is all soulmates and platonically romantic in a way, but this is peak sibling energy and i love it when they do that.
