the house smelled faintly like the beer in your fridge and whatever you'd managed to cook for dinner. the bar guy was sitting at the chair, looking at you, beer half-empty next to his hand that rested on the table.
"you ever think about how ridiculous it is," he said, voice low and amused, "that i'm stuck in someone else's house, drinking their booze, sitting like family, and you're just… letting me?"
you shrugged, eyes focused on the fried eggs you were making for the neighbor's daughter who was playing with the cat. "guess it's better than falling into psychosis thinking everyone's a visitor."
he snorted, leaning forward, letting the faint light catch the sharp planes of his face. "you could have kicked me out the first day. it was way worse back then, wasn't it?"
as you turn to look at him, you caught his gaze. steady but careful. his smirk was faint, teasing, but there was a spark of approval there too.
"don’t read too much into it," you said, turning with a shy smile.
"oh, i’ve already got my ideas," he replied, a glint of mischief in his eye and smiling for himself.
he leaned back again, casual, but the tension hummed between you, charged, unspoken. for all his sarcasm and brashness, it was clear he’d been waiting for someone who wouldn't blink at him the way most people did.
a/n: i find so cute the idea of a found family with bar guy, the neighbor's daughter and the cat im so sad. tbh he looks like a non-pet guy, but i like the idea of him being that type of dad who's like 'i don't want pets' and later is sleeping with the pet in bed.
