Welp...I hate to be "that person," but my interest in S3 just tanked. It feels like kind of a slap in the face since Haladriel fans make up a HUGE part of the show's loyal fan base. I'm also a bit annoyed that they acted like Jamie Campbell Bower's identity was such a big secret this whole time, only to release it so far before the show even airs. What was the point of all that?

Surely they wouldn't let such a great thing as the chemistry between Sauron and Galadriel go just like that. Right? Right?????

Some reassuring thoughts

Been a while since I've had to do a "Live together.." speech, but with all the stuff that has gone down, no time like the present!

First of all, I'm not going to lie, I'm one of the Haladriel's who's panicking. But that's life in a fandom like this. Oh, the fun, right? 😃 Then, when I saw speculation about that pic being a flashback, it got me thinking.

Ok, hear me out: if we're first introduced to Mr. NPC in a flashback, it could be Galadriel trying to focus on the good times; the peaceful times. And it's not just because there's a whole war going on. I got the feeling from the finale that she's going to be the face of hope for the elves during the war. She has Nenya, and knows what kind of power it has, now. Maybe she's been using it for magic all these however many years. Perhaps she's been doing wondrous things with it for her people. She think she has to live up to their expectations of being a great leader. It'd be a lot of pressure for her, or anyone, in that position. She'd probably want to step away from it every now and again.

Then, there's that pesky wound, which, if keeping with the lore, will never fully heal. It probably twinges every now and again (maybe it would happen on the anniversary like Frodo's injuries do). It may allow her to tap into something darker, whether intentionally or not, and it scares her. Yet that doesn't compare to the fear of knowing that she now has a direct link to the most dangerous being in her life (for more than one reason).

And it is hard to run away from.

are u kidding ofc we did! jealous sauron trying to be all nonchalant and casual and failing miserably. galadriel trying desperately to recapture what she and celeborn had but being unable to because something changed. someone changed her. its going to be an absolute FEAST

Clearly, someone missed the point. It doesn't matter that Celeborn is coming back, or that Galadriel is becoming the Lady we know—that’s the whole idea. The point is simply that it’s striking to see the first image of her for this season... with her husband. Usually, we see her alone, or else in the company of Sauron/Charlie—you know, the show's other main character? The one she literally forms a duo with—the very heart of the show? Yet here, the first image of her for Season 3 is with her husband, not on her own as usual. And her husband is played by an actor who is far more famous than she is—someone who doesn't get cast in minor roles. Whereas Celeborn... well, he isn't exactly a major character to begin with. So, people are wondering what they’re going to do with him. And the reason for the concern is that, in Season 2, Galadriel was already sidelined in the show's narrative. That’s what this is about. It’s not exactly hard to understand. And honestly, I couldn't care less about Celeborn in this show. It’s obvious Galadriel is in love with Sauron anyway. So, I’m going to relish the classic love triangle: the girl tempted by darkness who’s drawn to the villain, yet still has a perfectly "nice boyfriend". I really insist that Galadriel’s arc regarding the darkness be maintained and continued—and that her relationship with Celeborn ties into that, too. Because we have to finish this arc before she becomes the lady we know. If Galadriel gets sidelined even more this season, and her connection to Sauron is downplayed in favor of a husband nobody cares about, I’m going to scream. Oh and I want see a jealous Sauron.

In season 1, Halbrand granted Galadriel a vision of a future as Sauron’s queen. And she rejected it. Full circle would be if in season 3, he gifts her a dream of an alternate life as Halbrand’s wife. And she hesitates. 🥹

Why didn't Gal give Sauron a psychic booty call to distract him from Frodo and Sam sneaking behind his nonexistent back? Is the Fellowship stupid?

The King of Darkness, the Queen of Light

It needn't be said, but this scene in S1e5 is one of my favorites because the direction and multiple layers of visual storytelling are so neat. As we can recall this is one of the most charged scenes between Halbrand and Galadriel. Where here they are accusing each other of manipulating the other. The clear metaphor is chess and using each other like "pawns".

But I think the full view of this scene must be fully appreciated. Let's rewind to how it started:

Halbrand is summoned to meet with the queen and comes upon this— and it appears a chessboard is already set by the time he arrives. The 2 players here are Ar-Pharazon and Galdriel. Between them is Tar Miriel. The quickest and most obvious play for power would be to “take on" the Queen. That is chess. The Queen Regent, and by extension, the King are very vulnerable. The people of Numenor are discontent and there is political unrest. Certainly, that is Pharazon's scheme and Galadriel is not immune to that temptation either. She is also using it as leverage. And it is represented in this scene; the table between them as the game is underway. But Halbrand ignores it and barely pays heed to the Queen:

Would that not be the most decisive and really effortless (for him) play? Two quick moves. Checkmate. Game over. He could take the kingdom, the army and power, SO easily. But he's not looking at Miriel. He's looking at Galadriel.

He doesn't want the easy win. He doesn't want to remove the queen. He wants to crown this one.

Again, Galadriel is quick to point out that Halbrand was using her to appoint himself king. Unknowing that he could have easily done so (as Sauron), were power all that he wanted. But what he does next contradicts that.

It is the anti-chess move -- he takes himself off the board saying "Find another head to crown." It is the opposite of what everyone else at that table would have done. But it is not an empty gesture. It is an emerging pattern. He wants her. This untameable, unpredictable, headstrong woman. An uncrowned queen with no lands of her own, no army and no allies behind her.

I just love watching season 1 all over again for this reason. Because the breadcrumbs are delicious. At first, human!Halbrand's motives appear murky and cunning. And after the reveal, when the audience gains clarity, perhaps the truth is closer to Sauron being a deeply lost and misguided spirit fumbling towards the closest thing to love and light he had ever been chanced to cling to. I get emotional.

Yo, I can sense the panic around haladriel nation. It’ll be ok. First, they aren’t endgame and we know that. Second, the writers confirmed the deep connection Sauron and Galadriel have with the main director of S2 and 3 saying Gal was in love with Halbrand. And in-show Elrond calling Galadriel out on all of the above so…if that isn’t rich material ripe for angst? And how could they not bring up Galadriel not pinging his Cel signal because she was so deep in her Dark Lord obsession?
