I Wish I Knew

I have started into a relationship with a wonderful person. I wish I knew how to help him overcome his addiction. He's ready, and I'm willing. Here's to hoping we can figure out this crazy thing called life.

pick: do you want to be with someone who loves you with their entire soul in a home where you are cared for where every day is happy even on the days in won’t be? do you want to be healthy and functional and alive? do you want to love? or do you want to get high? do you want to hurt everyone who cares so bad they don’t care anymore? alone in a new place every day chasing feelings off of tin foil? you won’t eat or sleep or think. your mom will identify your body she won’t recognize you, though. did you pick? did you have to think about it? it’s such an easy choice so why is it so hard?

Some of the most fascinating people I’ve ever met are those who have overcome addiction. Be it to gambling or cutting or meth, these are the people who lost all power over their life but fought tooth and nail to snatch it back from the abyss. There’s a strength and a courage to that and I cant help but admire it.

But here’s the rub of addiction. By its nature, people afflicted are unable to do what, from the outside, appears to be a simple solution—don’t drink. Don’t use drugs. In exchange for that one small sacrifice, you will be given a gift that other terminally ill people would give anything for: life.
