Spike's disillusionment with his father and concordantly his island community is a metaphor for institutional British masculinity failing the current generation by trying to maintain narratives of greatness and dominance rather than maintenance and growth. Spike's running into the Jimmies at the end of the movie will signal this disillusionment as one of the vital ingredients of violent radicalization in young men. That being said, 28 Years Later is also a somewhat Arthurian/Medievalist tale, not only because of the prominence of yew bows and the very deliberate callbacks to technicolor medieval romantic films, but the fact that Spike leaves his island community in a rejection of the moral failings of his father, witnesses a miracle in the birth of an uninfected baby from an infected mother, and meets a mystic/Merlin figure in Dr. Kelson but is unable to actually return home once his quest has started. I imagine "The Bone Temple" will be another step in this story as Spike's coming of age, where he will have to eventually resist and reject the indoctrination of the Jimmies and forge his own identity.

Yes, this. As I said, it did feel like a tale but no ordinary arthurian tale; more a spin, a variation on it — one with comedic elements. More like Monty Python and the Holy Grail (heavy Monty Python vibes were also mentioned by me earlier)
