the church is usually stereotyped as overwhelmingly white and I understand why, despite it becoming less and less accurate over time. however ☝️ I think our polynesian siblings in christ deserve WAY more credit than they get for carrying mormon culture on their shoulders

Part of mourning President Holland, for me, is mourning once again the man I wanted him to be. I would love to join the many others who have nothing but fond and good memories of him, but I can't.

This is the man who spoke beautifully about the songs sung and unsung in the hearts of God's children. This is also the man who, representing the church, was an (unsuccessful) "no" vote on the Scouting America decision to allow openly queer men to serve as leaders, the church calling the notion in a press release "inconsistent with the doctrines of the church." This was only ten years ago, two years after I had been awarded my Eagle and graduated from young men's.

This is the man who has been one of the loudest, most emphatic voices in church leadership speaking compassionately to the mentally ill. This is also the man who railed against a BYU valedictorian for coming out as gay in his graduation speech (even with the foreknowledge and approval of BYU administration), and, in a time of increasing political polarization and violence, called for more musket fire in defense of the church's teachings on gender and sexuality, all while claiming to weep deeply on behalf of the queer community. This was only four years ago.

I'm sure many will remember President Holland as a man of great empathy and understanding. I will remember his empathy and understanding, too, but I will also remember their limits. I will always wonder which was the version of me, a gay Mormon, that he wept for, and why.

The apostle Jeffrey R Holland died this morning due to health struggles. As our prophet i figures you should know cause genuinely I liked him and i'm feeling a little sad.

queerstake is like a fandom to me. niche group of people who have mixed feelings about the canon material so we're kinda doing our own thing. here's an alternative take on a popular (or unpopular) aspect of canon. here's an analysis essay on an obscure detail very few fans of canon even know about. there's memes. there's text posts. there's even fanart. and our haters LOOOVE to pop into the fandom tags or comment on our posts to say we're problematic and need to find a new fandom and "fandom dni." etc etc etc
