Are you kidding? That sounds adorable. I wanna see them now.
I propose at our next Glitter Squad meeting we decoupage frames for our mothers to house those pictures. I mean, we’ll get some therapy out of showing them to one another and they’ll get a gift.
It’s been two weeks now and I still can’t bring myself to listen to David Bowie’s latest album since the first I listened the day it came out. I’m still reeling, like there’s a huge hole in my life now I’m not sure I’ll ever be able to fill.
I’m sorry, Ned. I know you really liked him. But, I heard an old man who has been coming into my store since my da’ ran it say somethin’ like -- “I’ve had a good life. I’ve got good memories and those are all we’ve got.” So, he might not be here, and it might be hard to listen to what he left you with, but you’ll always have those memories of what it was first like. Does that make sense?
My mum just called and told me that she found some hilarious baby pictures of me, then proceeded to ask if I remembered the time I started taking my clothes off in the middle of the grocery store. I have a feeling I’m going to need a lighter to get rid of these pictures. I can totally make it look like a freak accident, right?
My mum has some photos of me wearing my older brother Adam’s St. Patrick costume from a school play when we were younger. I must have been two? Maybe three. But it’s a picture of me holding the scepter and the giant robe and standing on the fireplace talking to our dog, Willy. I’m really glad she hasn’t pulled them out in a while.
I know what you mean. I thought I was doing so well for a while, not thinking of any of it, and then here she comes and says, “Hello,” and it’s like a punch to the gut. And I don’t… I don’t talk about it–about her–very often, but. Thank you, Lily. I dunno if might… but I’m here, too.
Who knew the word “Hello” could reduce two functioning adults to tears, yeah? -laughs- You know, I don’t talk about him very often either. At least I try not to. It hurts to even think about him, you know? And sometimes Z will ask where he is and I have to explain that he doesn’t come to visit her anymore not because he doesn’t want to but because he can’t and it’s. Hard. She typically accepts it and then goes to find Uncle Liam who has been staying with me recently. But -- yeah. I know it’s hard but, you deserve better.
I’m not even sure what I’m feeling any more. I can’t tell if it’s sadness or nostalgia or some strange, transmuted shade of relief. I’m beginning to think I’m not feeling anything at all, and that I’ve been hollowed out for the time being, but I don’t know how to put it all back.
When I hear it, I think of my hus- ex-husband. It’s very strange, you know? It’s like -- it’s like she’s saying the things I wanna say but I can’t. But, it’s alright you know? I mean, it’ll be alright. I’m here, you know. If you ever need to -- talk.
I think I actually need someone’s help, because I don’t seem to have the self-restraint to turn of Adele’s new single and it might be beginning to cause me physical pain.

Well thank god it’s normal. An’ usually I’d talk t’ my sister ‘bout it, but she’s busy at work n’ such. Plus, I feel like I bother her with too many questions about Elliott. Babies are honestly so weird. He’s ‘bout four n’ a half months old, which is still incredible t’ me that I can keep another human alive. An’ even more remarkable that he seems t’ like me.
Oh please, I’m sure your sister would love to listen to you talk about it -- but if not, I’ll listen to you. My brothers don’t have any kids -- all five of ‘em so I’m basically wandering alone with two kids by myself right now. Zoe, she’s nearly two now, but she was quite a hassle when she was a wee one. When she was about 5 months old she did a very similar thing to your Elliott. My boy, Liam, he’s about 7 months now, and he’s getting into the phase of blowing bubbles with his mouth and laughing at himself. -grins- You know, the secret of all parents is -- our kids don’t know we have no fuckin’ clue what we’re doing so we just keep trying our best.
Babies really are weird. An’ since he’s my first, anythin’ that seems outta the ordinary gives me a feckin’ heart attack.
When my daughter was younger, she used to stare at me while she was sleeping. My son still does it since he’s still quite young. It’s really, really weird. Newborns are the weirdest creatures on this planet, no matter what anyone says. I still find it hard to believe that civilization has survived this long, you know? I mean, I love my kids with all my heart but -- let’s be really honest here, they’re really really weird.
Elliott is tryin’ this new thing where he jus’ doesn’t blink for what seems like forever.
I have no idea if that’s normal or not.
It’s pretty normal.

“You’ve done nothing to warrant excuses or apologies, Lily. It’s fine, don’t worry. They don’t sound like terribly effective uncles, but then again I’m not one to talk–I’m a sort of pseudo-uncle myself, but it’s much harder to spoil a child when they live across the ocean. Not that I’d be much good, anyway, seeing as all I can really do is play them music, but I suppose it’s the thought that counts.” Ned carefully selected a page in the coloring book Zoe handed him and reached for a blue marker, sticking his tongue out as he started to color. When the little girl poked curiously at his tattoo, he turned it back to her and smiled. “I have it because I like it so much, and I thought I needed more color in my life. And also possibly,” he said, with a sheepish look over at Lily, “a little bit because my aunt is a terrible influence and puts far more vodka in her screwdrivers than anyone should.” When he looked back at the page, he found he’d trailed out of the lines at some point, and there was a growing splotch of dark, saturated blue in the vicinity of Captain America’s left foot; he had the good manners to look chastened when he made eye contact with Zoe again. “Liam, huh? Is he named after your brother, the one you tell all those stories about?”
“As long as you think so, Ned,” Lillian grinned widely. “Well, that’s what cards are for. I mean, they might not appreciate them just yet -- but one day they will. I have all the cards one of my aunts sent me,” Lily laughed, “or maybe I’m just a hoarder.” Lillian smiled as she watched Zoe and Ned together, especially as he explained to her what his tattoo was. “It’s alright, I’ve got a tattoo of wildflowers on my thigh. One for each of my brothers and one for each of my parents. That one was influenced by my brother Stephen and a bet that I couldn’t take the pain,” Lily smirked. “Yeah -- Liam’s the one that kind of -- helped me out of my last relationship,” Lily chose her words carefully -- hoping that Z wasn’t paying enough attention. Luckily, her nose was so deep into her princess coloring book -- she was probably trying to enter the coloring book.

“I’d’ve listened to you talk about anything, really. It’s a bit of a surprise, but you’ve nothing to be sorry for. I mean, I can definitely understand why you wouldn’t just start telling the random neighborhood bartender who sometimes buys comics from you about your kids. But I–I love kids. Feel free to regale me with stories at any time.” Ned smiled down at Zoe as she took his hand and pulled him over to her coloring table. “Do you have any Captain America pages, maybe? He’s my favorite,” he said, pointing at the trademark shield tattooed on his inner forearm. He looked up at Lily from his seat cross-legged on the floor and grinned at her. “I’m really not doing anything at all, honestly. I don’t work till tonight, and coloring’s a good way to pass the time. Besides, the company can’t be beat. Is there anything you need?”
“I promise I didn’t keep them as a secret -- they’d be an awfully loud secret. My brothers like to place bets on which one makes the most noise at night but, well, none of my brothers besides occasionally Gavin or Liam will come and help me if one of them is sick,” Lily chuckled, “I’m glad you like kids though -- our friendship might become complicated if you didn’t like kids since I’ve got these two pals. Well, Zoe’s more of a pal than Liam Bean is -- he’s more interested in sleeping and cuddling, but then again he was only born in February so he’s not exactly interested in much else just yet.” Lily watched Zoe grab the one Superhero coloring book that her Gran had bought her and passed it to Ned with a giggle before saying “Why you have colorin’ on arm?” Lily laughed to herself before returning her attention to the work on her counter. “Well, it’s lovely that you’ve chosen to spend your day off with the three of us -- I promise once Bean wakes up he might make an appearance.”

I really owe you if it works, I’ve stopped myself from messing with glitter at all because I just know what a mess I’ll make. I’m going to buy a load of pink glitter as soon as possible.” She nodded excitedly, her eyes lighting up, brighter than they were before, genuine happiness flooding her expression at the thought of a DIY group. “Yes! I would love that! Bring her along and she can sit and play with all the glitter she wants to!”
“I mean, I had the world’s most supportive mum growing up so I’m used to being smothered in attention and praise, I think it’s fair that I give that back to my two muffins,” Lily laughed. “I know! It’s genius, right? Strong hold works best I guess. I have some pink glitter at my place, for our DIY diva nights it should come in handy,” Lily smirked. “She’ll bathe herself in glitter if we’re not careful, you know. Once I let her alone while I was working and she was visiting me and she nearly covered the floor with glitter. Customers laughed at me as I was vacuuming for ages. I’m glad you like this DIY group, though. I’m sure we could find a couple of members too! It’ll be a nice de-stresser, you know?”

I’m twenty years older than that and I have a fascination with glitter,” Anna giggled, ducking her head with mock shame. “That’s how my crafts always used to end up, and it falls off so easily. I’m sure my mums got quite tired of it ending up all over their clothes somehow, and the floors but… it’s too pretty to complain about.” She smiled, “You’re welcome. “I mean, to be fair to the lass she’s quite good with the glitter. She’s not too conservative, I will say, but she’s got her own style and I adore it. But I am her mammy so I’m suppose to be sayin’ that,” Lily grinned. “Hairspray, doe. Spray it with a little bit of extra hold hairspray and boom it’ll stick like a charm and you won’t been feelin’ sorry because your art’s fallin’ apart. I feel like Mother Hen for tellin’ you that trick but Miss Eileen suggested it when I was bringin’ little miss Z home from her playgroup and she was all excited to do the crafts at home,” the strawberry blonde laughed again. “You and I could start a DIY group if you wanted, just two gals doin’ arts and crafts -- I could bring little Z along and she could just sit and play with her glitter sticks.”

Ned could feel his smile falter for just a moment. “Your daughter?” He was quick to replace it, though, with as broad a grin as he could manage, trying to exude all the warmth and good feeling he had. He looked at the little girl on her mother’s hip and schooled his features into something mock serious. “Hello, Zoe,” he said, holding his hand out as if to shake hers. “I’m Ned. I’m a friend of your mum’s, and I’d very much like to stay here for a little while and hang out. Would that be okay with you?”
“Yeah, I’m sorry I didn’t tell you that I had kids before I just -- I figured you wouldn’t be, you know, interested by the glamour of being a single mom of two under two,” Lily laughed. “Alright Lady Z,” she said kissing her daughter’s cheek, “Mr. Ned is going to play with you for a little while while Mummy does some work, okay?” Lily placed Zoe on the ground and watched her toddle over to Ned’s side and watched Zoe direct Ned to the small table that had several colouring books and boxes of crayons set up. “Ned, you’re a hero. Thank you, so much.”
