I call him Whitey
The stray cat I was feeding passed away yesterday, and I still canāt believe Iām writing this. Every day, I fed him during lunch and dinner. Yesterday, I went to look for him like I always did, but he never came. His bowl was still there, untouched. I kept telling myself he was probably just wandering around and would come back later.
But later that day, as we were heading out, I saw a cat lying on the road.
I was in denialā¦
I didnāt want to believe it.
Then I looked again⦠and my heart shattered.
It was himā¦
I donāt think Iāll ever forget that moment. Seeing his little body lying there broke something inside me. I couldnāt stop crying, and even now, every time I think about him, it feels like someone is squeezing my heart.
The night before was our last night together.
I gave him a full pack of wet food and some dry food. He ate until he was full, looking so happy. Before he left, he rubbed his little head against my legs, his sweet way of saying thank you.
If only I had known that would be our last goodbyeā¦
I wouldāve stayed with him a little longer.
I wouldāve given him another hug.
Another meal.
Another gentle pat.
Anything⦠just one more moment.
He wasnāt just a strayā¦
He waited for me every day. He trusted me. He made me smile, and without realizing it, he became part of my daily life and a part of my heart.
It hurts knowing that yesterday, I was looking for him while he was already gone.
I hope his last memory was of being loved, of having a full tummy, and of knowing that someone was always waiting for him.
Run free my sweet boy! No more hunger. No more danger. No more pain.
Thank you for choosing me, even if it was only for a little while.
I will miss you every single day. š¤
