Learning piano as an adult
Does anyone have any recommendations for exercises to learn piano? I don't have the money for lessons at the moment, so I would like to build my skill with etudes and workbooks. Any ideas? @madopiano @pianistical @pianononsense
Commonly known as: French Horn Commonly known as: Cor Anglias
What?!
@dennisbrain Mozart as it's meant to be played...
Since coming back from China I haven't practised. I wish I had, but I haven't. I kept using excuses like needing to do housework and job searching. Realistically I could've practised, but I didn't. Today I filled in for a rehearsal. It went okay, but I didn't do as well as I could have. So today I decided I'm going to practise every day. I don't know how much I'll be able to do, but I will practise every day. So. How do you go about building practise discipline? I'm open to any suggestions
I wrote a post about trombonist intonation. Being a trombonist, I meant to convey the difficulties of trombone playing. I'm not sure that's how you all took it...
Friendly reminder that today is not only a celebration of our achievements, but of the fight we face to accomplish and defend them.
two hours into an opera rehearsal
Maestro: Okay, trumpets and trombones, forty minute break.
Principal trumpet: We've already been on break for two hours.
Do the dynamics, make life interesting…
My bouquet of roses!
My girlfriend is making sheet music roses right now and they look really cool!
We call these ones pingers.
Trombone Tutor on breath attacks
I was just tagged by @riz266 :) Thank you!
1. How old are you? 21
2. What’s your current job? Job seeking, but also a brass music tutor with a private studio and front of house staff with my old university theatre.
3. What are you talented at? Making music with a big hunk of metal and my lips. I’m also a moderately good playwright and a passionate teacher.
4. What is a big goal you are working towards (or have already achieved)? Here are the big ones. - Have my first play performed - Write my next two plays - Become a casual musician with the QSO - Earn my masters in music education
5. What’s your aesthetic? Hawaiian shirts, odd socks/thongs. Otherwise, whatever takes my fancy
6. Do you collect anything? Concert programs!
7. What’s a topic you always talk about? Absurd plays, new music, and cinematography.
8. What’s a pet peeve of yours? When people don’t acknowledge criticisms or blame others for it. Especially in a section environment.
9. Good advice to give? Breathe. It’s the one thing I always come back to. It doesn’t matter if your problem is playing a brass/wind instrument, conducting, a panic attack or a cranky customer at work. Take the time to breathe deeply and you’ll be one step closer to a solution.
10. What are three songs you’d recommend?
1955 - Hilltop Hoods I really love the sampling in this track, plus they’re a quality Aussie hip-hop group. There’s actually a thriving rap scene in Australia and these guys rest on the more mainstream side of it.
Piano Concerto #2 - Maurice Ravel I have fallen in love with Ravel recently and this is one of the reasons. With influences from Gershwin, Ravel expand his sound and has a lot of fun with this. Almost enough to forgive orchestrating saxophones into Pictures.
One Note Samba - Ella Fitzgerald Ella is a legendary musician and this is my favourite scat track. I once thought that it was just random syllables to music and that any half decent musician could do it. I was so wrong.
I tag @elliefluteelephant, @tumorsandmusic, and @nonstandardrepertoire. Plus any of you who would like to do it.
Do you have any recommendations for unaccompanied baroque repertoire? I try to steal flute rep and my favourites have been the Telemann sonatas
Flute rep on bass trombone, okay cool. Of course there’s the Bach Partita, and the Fantasies. There’s the CPE Bach solo sonata (a minor) which is pretty cool. Apart from that I can’t think of anything, but keep in mind that I only do Baroque rep when required of me…. I’m sure I have some followers that can help
Thank you :) And I promise I’ll be kind to your repertoire
Do what you will to it! I’m curious how it works out for you because I’m always trying to convince my boyfriend to steal rep from non brass instruments and he is kind of disdainful (which is most because he likes to make fun of me)
Well the Telemann fantasies (not sonatas. Whoops) were really good to play for me. I just had to transpose them into the register and then it was good to go. I played some bassoon pieces for my first year recital and it just went from there
Feel free to tell him that (he’s also bass trombone) :P
@lowpitchapproximator there’s an amazing low flute/contemporary music player in England called Carla Rees whose company rarescale has commissioned/arranged lots of music for low flutes if that would be a useful place to start 😊
Thank you! I'll have to check it out. At the moment I'm back to working on fundamentals and excerptd for a while, but I'll put it on my repertoire list for the near future!
What am I doing? Why do I let myself do this to me?
