Are you American, and when you’re speaking in the third conditional (past tense that didn’t actually happen), do you use the word “would”, or “had”? So for example, do you say “I wish I WOULD have told you sooner”, or “I wish I HAD have told you sooner”? Or do you only ever say “I wish I’D have told you sooner” without thinking about what words you’re contracting?
American: I say “WOULD have”
American: I say “HAD have”
American: I just say “I’D have” and don’t think about the words I’m contracting
American: I say both
American: Never said anything like this before in my life
Not American: I say “WOULD have”
Not American: I say “HAD have”
Not American: I just say “I’D have” and don’t think about the words I’m contracting
Not American: I say both

Where I’m from we exclusively say “had have”, so despite the fact that most of the movies, shows, and content creators I watch are American, “would have” just never ceases to sound like gobbledygook to me 😭
