Sat on the deck's grassy floor, leaning on the walls of the Sunny, your mood had taken a downturn. The sun had begun to set now, but the sky and the breeze at this time of day were like a comforting embrace when you felt like this. Just likeβ¦
"(Y/N)! Why are you sitting there?" Luffy had walked into your line of vision before you even noticed he was close. Your name had been called out with a smile on his face, which then shifted into a semi-confused expression, hands on his hips.
"I seeβ¦" He mumbled, and thenβ¦ "Well, I'll sit with you, then!"
You gave him a small, pursed-lips smile, which he reciprocated with that big, toothy smile of his while he flopped down next to you in his usual carefree manner. He sprawled his legs in front of him, and supported his weight behind him with his arms.
The sudden company of your captain was comforting too, but in your sulking you lacked ideas for conversation, while simultaneously dreading the topic shifting to your feelings. Your eyes traveled from his beaming face to your fingers that you were fidgeting with. You silently hoped and waited for him to speak about anything.
A few long seconds passed in which you felt him watching you. With the way he is, you fear he's seen through you.
And with the way he is, you fear he'll wait for you to say something, too.
In vain, you let some more seconds pass in the hopes that you're wrong and that he'll be the first to break the silence. When nothing changes, you slowly drag up your knees and bury your face in them, to make speaking easier.
"Luffy," you started, voice trembling a little. "Can I just lean on you for a bit?"
In the span of a second you feel him placing his hat on your head and pull you towards his chest. Your ear is directly on top of his steady heartbeat, and his arms tighten around you. One of his hands caresses your arm gently, as you let yourself melt into his embrace.
"Of course." It's said assuredly, almost a certain pride in his voice. This tone is on the rarer side when coming from your captain, but you've heard it before β you've taken it to signify a certain protective feeling towards those he cares about. Though you can't see his face from this angle, you can imagine the frown on his face. "What happened?"
"Nothing really happened. I've just been thinking about some bad things," you confessed.
He hummed in thought for a few moments.
"Then, what about thinking about something else?" The suggestion, coming after some pondering, sounded as if he had come across a genius solution. "We could go to the kitchen and steal some food from Sanji!"
You snorted, removing yourself from his chest and looking at him, who was already beaming at you, as if he had achieved something. "Of course you would want to do that!"
"Yeah! Let's go!" He got up abruptly, pushing you up with him, and, with your hand in his, ran towards the kitchen.
Somehow, like the sun that still shines through on a cloudy day, he has already replaced your heartache with something brighter.
