“I figured,” he said with a short chuckle. Nate shifted his weight when the botanist asked why he was there. “Not much to do around here when you’re not allowed OTG, I guess,” he answered with a short shrug. “I’m still healing up my ankle. Also I saw you digging around over here and I got curious.”

“But- now I have ideas for some animal traps when I get back out. So thanks for that.”

“I only keep two gardens, not counting the ones in the lab, so you got lucky finding me ‘digging around’,” He told him; the garden was in a small enough space behind the building that the only other people who really knew it was there were the kids who had found it while exploring.

“..You think these might be useful for hunting? I knew they’d come in handy eventually,”

“Yeah, I, uh–” Never one to feel empowered to disagree–at least not since drawing attention to herself had become a social death sentence–Cosima struggled to clarify politely. Forcing a brighter smile, she continued. “I mean…of course you’re studying plants. I meant to ask what about these plants in this garden you were studying. It seems like such a chaotic place for scientific observation to me, so I wondered what you were looking for.” Between the inability to control for weather, light, water source, and the trampling of the smaller alia terrans who were less careful, the study piqued her curiosity. And, having been unable to pursue her interest in botany since her reputation had been tarnished, it was a bittersweet thing to discuss.

“Sorry, I get caught up talking sometimes.. Only about plants, If I talked this much about anything else everyone would be annoyed enough to kick me out of the colony,” He joked, sensing her shift in tone. “It’s a good question, I mean this is a tough place to raise a garden with all of the foot traffic, it’s honestly just.. Having it makes me feel better. I can tend to it on my days off without needing clearance, it gives me something to look after.. And sometimes the plants come in handy for medicinal reasons. I like having them around."

Most people would be judging the scientist; Nasir should be judging, but he just laughs at the odd behavior. It was a flower, and he looked at it like it was the Virgin Mary herself, but everybody had their things he guessed. Nasir’s were just more interesting than flowers. Sure, there was a certain aesthetic beauty about them, but the jungle was teeming with them. You couldn’t swing a dead cat without hitting at least one of them. At Outpost 7, seeing a book would be a more impressive event than seeing a flower. When the man finally turned towards him, a wicked grin grew on his face. While handsome, he looked oddly childlike when dealing with plants, as if his professionalism hadn’t yet hardened him past the point of passion.

Laughing at the other’s reactions, he happily chirped back, “What can I say, I’m a heart breaker. Besides, you should be more aware outside of the colonies gates. I’m really doing you a favor.” At a second glance he looked like some English professor at Cambridge, more akin to lecturing in a classroom than a jungle like this. “Can’t you tell?” Outsiders were easy to identify in comparison to colonists. Their outfits were less regulated and without a doubt less clean, and most outsiders had a perpetual layer of grime and dirt covering them. “Do you have a name? Or are you just the plant guy.”

The jungle continued to buzz with the sounds of nature around them, and though his heart was still racing from the fright, the first thing that really struck Luc was a feeling; The man in front of him, though he seemed confident and forward, didn’t feel like a threat. Maybe Luc wasn’t an especially keen judge of character, but feelings were worth something. What was he to do anyways, even if he was wrong? Run? If he was going to have to fight he’d at least save his dignity. “Luckily I’m not prone to any heart problems.” He said softly, and suddenly Luc realized he couldn’t even recall which way he’d come from. “Maybe I should be more aware, but you don’t look like a dinosaur, so no harm done, right?” He let his shoulders relax a bit and took a deep breath; Staying close to the colony kept him from chance meetings, but there had to be a first for everything. “Forgive me, It’s only that I’ve never run into an outsider before. My name is Luc,” He extended a hand.

Daxon had to hold back a smile as the child attempted to sneak away- it wasn’t an uncommon reaction to him. He liked to think children sensed his authority, but he knew plenty of them just thought he was weird. That was fine, though. He’d been weird all of his life, and the lack of small feet traipsing around was one less thing to trip over as he worked.

“I’m working with Command to set up another expedition,” Daxon began explaining, “I want to do an in-depth lake survey- collect samples from various depths, record the water temperatures, test acidity, tag fish…” Luc obviously would already know what a lake survey was, but after talking to Yates for an hour he was still stuck in explanation mode. “There’s still a lot of red tape and I don’t have a date yet, but I wanted to offer you a position on it, get a clean personnel list and make sure everyone’s got security clearance.”

Luc peeled his work gloves off as Daxon spoke, shoving them into the pocket of his apron and cracking his aching fingers to stave off the stiffness that set in after every long day of work. He gave Daxon a look of understanding as the man’s sentence paused, “And I don’t have many specimens from underwater,” He pondered, “It would be a good idea for me to come along, the more manpower the better.” It was easy enough to fill in the blanks, and Luc was grateful for the company, going out alone was always unpleasant. “Count me in, but.. One question, do you know how to swim?”

❝So … you just want to hurt kids. Not kill them. That’s good to know.❞ Daniel’s hands slid into the pockets of his slacks and he shied away from the plants, stepping back to distance himself from the temptation of a touch. ❝Everything’s useful. I’m sure someone could use this for … something.❞ He frowned. ❝Is this toxic to people and animals? — You know this is morbid. You sure you grabbed all the poisoned ones? I’d prefer not to get sick or die by accident here, of all places.❞

“Only the kids who keep kicking my fence down.. I worked hard to weave that,” Luc specified with a teasing smile creeping onto his face. “I did put up a sign warning that these plants are toxic, but someone drew a crude picture on it so I took it back down,” He gave a shrug of defeat, “I’ve been living by the hope that people won’t eat plants that they don’t recognize.. None of them are toxic to the touch so as long as you don’t suppose that they look tasty, I think it’s as safe as can be!”

Nate nodded slowly, trying his best to commit the plants to memory. “Right,” he replied, particularly curious about the one that could work as a knockout potion. Might come in handy OTG. “Wait-” he said suddenly, “So how exactly do you know what they all do?” he asked, wondering what sort of testing had to be done to figure out their uses.

“Remind me never to get on your bad side,” he added, chuckling slightly.

Luc’s body froze at the question and he cleared his throat, “I did not try them all firsthand if that’s what you’re picturing,” He replied, leaning back against the wall of his building, beside the garden, “If I researched by eating all the plants I’d die... Why are you humoring all of my plant talk?”

“Of course, very important to your… research..” Addison nodded, folding her arms over her chest as she gazed down at the small garden he’d built. New people. As much as Addison knew the pilgrimages were good thing, she couldn’t help but be annoyed with the learning curve everyone had to go through after arriving. For the most part she could avoid it and didn’t care in the least- she was not a babysitter nor anyone’s mom- but if anyone started breaking things or doing anything that Addison would later have to fix, well, that was when they’d get a pleasant little chat from the not-so-sunny-dispositioned woman.”I’m not gonna steal your little plants,” she huffed, “just make sure you keep it contained. Things grow big here and if the roots start fucking with plumbing or something like that, I’m not afraid to get someone to chop it all down.”

“What’s important to my research is important to us all,” Luc unhelpfully pointed out, knowing he was only poking the bear with his commentary. With how stern she was towards him, it made him wonder if he’d met her somewhere before and accidentally slighted her- his joking attitude wasn’t helping the fact. “You have nothing to fear from these little ones, they’re all from small species, they won’t get much larger than this as long as I tend to them.. The giant tentacular plants in the lab are the real worry, but I’m sure I can handle it.” A teasing smile reveled that he wasn’t serious, and he offered a noncommittal shrug. “Why are you so worried about my plants anyhow?”

“I don’t think it looks like weeds.” Cosima told him, a pang of jealousy burning in her chest at the mention of research. “It looks really nice.” After she was sure he was talking to her, she approached the miniature garden gingerly, aware of even the folding of grass beneath her boots. “Isn’t it … difficult to control for so many variables with it out here? Do you have a control group somewhere else?” It’s not that she means to be insufferable–she hasn’t spoken to someone else socially for the better part of the day. All of her conversations are tasks. “What are you studying?” It’s painful to talk about things she can’t have, but failure doesn’t snuff out the flame of a scientific mind.

Luc braced his boots in the soft top-soil and took a small shovel from his tool-box, digging a neat hole between his favorite reddish plant, and a rather new flower he’d been observing. Carefully handling its roots, he lifted a new plant into the hole, as delicately as handling a small, frail animal. “This garden holds very few of my specimens,” He admitted, “The plants that I introduce here aren’t picky, and they won’t wage war on each other.. Not like some of the ones I have to keep in the lab. My job is to learn about the plants around here, so others don’t have to. I’m the designated plant man,”

❝Specimens?❞ Daniel spat, surprised, HORRIFIED. Wide brown eyes gaped as he snatched his hand back. He almost had touched a leaf. To think — creatures. TOXIC. Daniel shivered, straightening as he glanced around the garden, wary, quick, swallowing when he turned back to Luc. ❝What are you supposed to be researching? What’s this for?❞

“On the bright side it’s not lethal, though! I had to uproot the real poison specimens when the kids started messing with the fences.” He explained with an abashed shrug and a half a shy smile as he cleaned his hands on his work apron. “I mean... My job is pretty intense, there’s always something to do. I’m supposed to figure out what all the plants around here are good for, what they could do to help this place.. This garden may not have the most traditionally helpful stuff but.. With some creativity it could definitely help someone.”

There was no doubt that the most overwhelming bit of this new world was its greenery and views. Their Earth had crumbled long ago and Parker never got to experience much of its past beauty, nor did anyone, really. When Parker had arrived, she had spent days wandering around Alia Terra in wonderment. However, she wasn’t allowed out of the walls and while that was to keep her safe, she couldn’t help but wish to see what not many others did. She could only imagine the landscaping beneath their walls. As she walked past and eyed the small garden, she hardly noticed him until he appeared before her. Having been here for two years and knowing he came within the pilgrimage after her, he was still recognizable. Working at the coffee shop often afforded her to be at least a tiny bit familiar with most people. As he spoke, she listened intently, a wider smile gracing her features. She was genuinely interested in it all. “It’s incredible, even if it’ll kill me.” She joked, glancing up at him. “Can you believe we got to come here and see all this? Still kinda blows my mind, even after two years.”

Luc’s expression melted into a shy smile, seeing the fascination in her face. Whenever a wandering soul happened by the garden, and spared a lingering glance at the small patch he worked hard to maintain, he piped up, giving the same small explanation.. And usually people nodded, smiled, and hurried off. “You don’t have to worry, the garden is entirely non-lethal.. It might make you sick and give you a nasty rash, but you’ll still be alive, and maybe you’ll get time off work.” He joked, wiping his hands on his jeans and straightening up. “I almost can’t believe it.” He admitted, “The second I stepped out of that portal, all I could see was miles of green. It’s why I do this.”

Nate looked on with a dubious expression, arms crossed over his chest as he surveyed the small garden. He nodded slightly, “So what’s the point in collecting ‘em if they don’t feed us and could possibly kill us?” he asked. He tilted his head as he noticed one of the plants in particular, “Y’know I think I’ve seen those on a trip before,” he remarked, pointing at the twiggy specimen in question. Now that he thought about it, one of the rangers may have used its leaves as toilet paper.

Luc gestured to a thick reddish plant in the back corner, “If brewed properly the roots make a great tea for bringing down a fever.” “And the thorny looking one, here, makes for a hell of a knockout potion. Every plant can benefit us, and even if one didn’t, someone’s got to observe them and I’m the designated man.” Luc paused, “Oh, that? Chew on the bark and you’ll upchuck for days, not lethal but definitely inconvenient.. If you ever had an enemy-... Nevermind.

Daxon had actually been hoping to find Luc to discuss a research expedition he had in the works- it may be weeks or months into the future, but he liked having plenty of time for his researchers and himself to prepare- when he saw the man was confronting one of the colony’s children. Probably a kid wanting to play in a garden with more exotic specimens, but inconvenient still. The situation reminded him how much they needed a greenhouse. He’d put in a request tomorrow, but god knows how difficult it could be working with command.

“Luc?” he greeted, eyeing the child. “Do you have a minute?”

Luc hadn’t expected much from such young children, he doubted they would be interested in the garden; all he really wanted was for them to stop trampling, tipping over, or stealing the small fence he’d made to protect the plants.. The feud was exhausting and never-ending. As soon as Daxon approached it gave the child the opportunity to slip off, and Luc stood up, brushing the soft soil off of his pants. “Just finishing up for the day, actually- what’s on your mind?”

“It may not look like much more than weeds but I’ve got a lot of specimens in this garden- though I started it myself and it doesn’t technically belong to the lab, it’s still important to my research.” Luc knelt down to fix the tiny, d-i-y fence that he’d built around the miniature garden outside of his building. “There’s nothing worth stealing, it’s all inedible and toxic, just be careful not to step on it or it could damage the samples and throw my research off for a week,”

Though at first he was a bit hesitant, by this point he had traversed most of the Yates Mountain Range, exploring what this brave new world had to offer. By this point he’d learned how to navigate the jungle, moving without making noise, and all that jazz. Slowly he’d also developed other skills, like swimming and climbing trees. By birth he was a city dweller, born and raised in concrete jungles, not actual jungles. Every so often he’d stumble upon somebody from the colony, be it a guard, ranger, or scientist. Scientists were often incredibly easy prey; he could quickly snatch materials that they left unattended. They also tended to be a talkative bunch, if you could find the right topic. Like Maia, she could talk about anything and everything for hours on end. Though at times it could be the slightest bit annoying, on the whole it could be rather entertaining.

That’s why when he saw some poor sap, wandering alone near Outpost Three, he couldn’t resist just popping in. At this point, if the person went outside of the gate, it was likely that Nasir had interacted with them on some level, no matter how limited. Most guards he had either escaped or stolen from, rangers he tended to talk to since they were less shoot-y, and scientists it was a combo of the two. He kept lists in his head who everybody was, who was easy to steal from, who was trigger-happy, and who was sociable. So, when he saw somebody he didn’t know he jumped on the chance to meet him. Soundlessly he emerged from the brush sneaking up behind the man, before announcing his presence, “What’s a hot thing like you do in a dark jungle like this?” A smirk was plastered on his face as he waited for the stranger to jump.

The afternoon light shining over the dense forest was a sight to behold; before he had arrived to Alia Terra, Luc could never have imagined the green of the forests to be so vivid and deep, it just didn’t seem possible, but only a few years later it was around him like an embrace. Every day that he woke up surrounded by beauty was a day that he wanted to venture out beyond the fences and just walk as far as he could go, seeing everything the planet had to offer.. Of course most people must feel the same way. At least he was here where he felt free, in the outside world where everything was quiet, and the air was fresh with the smell of pine trees, and the water was cool and crisp when his hands dipped into the stream.. It was akin to what he imagined heaven might be like. He kept close enough to the perimeters of the colony usually, that danger was a foreign threat, but each time he drifted out just a bit farther, tasting new air; This time was his farthest trek yet, and he crouched near a stream to appreciate some rare flowers. “Haven’t seen your kind for a while,” He muttered, not fully realizing the implication of how talking to plants might make him look.. But the one-sided conversation was cut short as a real voice responded from behind him. He immediately shot up onto his feet and brushed his knees off. “You might give someone a heart attack doing that!” His own hand rested over his heart and felt the rapid fluttering of surprise as it dwindled back down. “I’m here to study the plants, I’m the plant guy.. And yourself?”

“Thank you,” Maya gave the women a smile as she paid for the fruit in her hand and turned to walk back to her house. Only that she didn’t get very far, running into someone as soon as she turned around. “Wow, the queue isn’t very long, no need to become one while waiting.”

“Sorry, I didn’t mean to crowd you..” Luc took a quick step back and almost dropped his files, gripping them hard to keep them safe. “I wasn’t even in line, actually. I meant to just sneak through without anyone noticing, but then you turned around and, well.. Surprise. A strange man lurking behind you, probably the last thing you wanted to see,”
