I love how this functions as peer review. Modern researchers have still been able to replace past results. These bitches gay.
First-year undergrad math textbooks: $300, only available through a DRM-protected portal that goes down for maintenance on Tuesdays. You can't even pirate it, because you're required to submit all of your homework through a proprietary portal that keeps bugging out. Will go out of date in 6 months because they feel like it. Made by some dude who barely passed undergrad.
Fourth-year undergrad math textbooks: $20 on Ebay. From the 60s, but all of the ideas still hold up except a minor reference on page 123. Widely available, despite being out of print. Made by the guy who invented numbers.
The worse your textbooks presentation is, the better the content is, and usually the later the university course is. It's not just math, it's every subject I've taken, and I took whatever the hell I wanted for 17 years. Soc course with glossy hardcover book? About to be the largest load of hogswallop you'll swallow your entire degree. By the time you get to seminars, you come in the first day and you're handed a bunch of photocopied notes, half of them hand-written, and it's going to be the most detailed analysis of the current literature. Engineering book with diagrams every other page, a webportal, and a fusion 360 student copy? You might think you'd keep it around as a reference book, but tbh, the internet is far better for that these days. But then you turn up for a civ lecture, and you're handed copies of a code that was last used in 1970 . . . and damn, you gotta be careful because some of these tables are outdated, and some of them are just bad ideas these days, but when you're trying to come up with a rough idea, it's all packaged right there. One day you're going to walk into the campus bookstore, look for your textbook, and find a stack of printer paper with smudged toner and a staple on the corner holding it all together, and you're going to think "WTF is this shit?", and I assure you, that bundle of notes will be the best goddamn textbook you've ever laid your eyes on. I have 6 like that.
Thriftbooks.com to save a life. Amazon also has an option to buy used books. I think I only had to buy from the campus bookstore like twice because it wasn't available anywhere else.
I don't know; I think we need to think about how we talk about practicality re: historical women's clothing
because one of the most common criticisms leveled at almost any mainstream western style for women pre-1920s is "it was impractical!!!!"
and like. okay. impractical for what though?
sure you can't like. I don't know. wrangle an escaped farm animal back into its pen in full Natural Form. but most women weren't doing that, any more than most of us are now, and the ones who were....wore Work Clothing during livestock-wrangling hours
had someone tell me the other day that you couldn't work a 9-5 job in Second Bustle dresses
you could go to the office in this. you could send memos to Janice in accounting in this. you could work many types of non-food retail in this. you could do several different types of museum jobs in this. you could be a dressmaker, miliner, seamstress, or lady journalist in this, at the time. you could be a doctor in this, although nowadays we know you shouldn't.
what do you MEAN you can't work a 9-5 in this? there are so so so many jobs, modern and otherwise, that could be done in exactly this outfit
I make most of my own clothing from patterns that usually date to like 1869 or 1879-82. long skirts and corsets and the whole shebang (well, okay, I do corset sometimes and bra sometimes, but I digress). my average day is walking to the train, taking the train to work, either sitting at a desk or walking around a museum for several hours, running errands, taking the train back, and walking home
dressing like a Victorian vampire countess is no impediment to my daily life whatsoever. and I average 2 miles of walking per day, so I'm MORE active than most of my fellow USAmericans on a daily basis
on the flipside. can you do aforementioned livestock-wrangling in modern fashion jeans? in trendy oversized tops? is the Clean Girl Aesthetic 100% practical and possible to maintain in all situations that could possibly arise?
what's that? it doesn't matter because you don't have to do those things in your clothing and you'd wear different clothing if you did?
OH WOW. WHO WOULD HAVE EVER CONSIDERED. SUCH AN IDEA.
surely not our Dumb-Dumb Stupid Brainless Ancestors, But Only the Women, Who Were Complete Idiots With No Concept Of Situational Clothing Adaptations
I need a drink
Their mock election was so realistic the school even played the role of the CIA

They stole my labor for profit. They did a capitalism to me on a communism meme. I can't decide if that's hilarious or infuriating.
I think it's so funny in romantasy books when the boy is like the fae king's bastard half-vampire son and he commands the power of the four elements and he's forced to walk the world forever slaying demons because he's cursed to never fall in true love unless he vanquishes all evil and then his name is like. Gavin. Riley. Blake. just really Some Guy name. Emmett, even.
this is my magic boyfriend he's a werepanther who's secretly the true heir to the throne of Atlantis and his skills include swords and prophecies. he knew he was destined to fall in love with me because he's been haunted by visions of my face in his dreams for years. his name is Brody.
