Has the SNM program changed much since 2016? Thanks!

Since 2016?  I’m not sure.  I’ve bought the program twice, first at the beginning of the show’s run, and then again several years later when the cover changed (probably around 2015 or so.) I haven’t purchased one since then.  

While the basics of the inside seems to have remained somewhat the same, there have been a few changes.  Of course the cover and the construction are different.  The earliest versions were sewn together instead of glued. (You can see the stitching in this picture.) 

And then at some point, the folded pages which had a couple of hidden secrets between them disappeared.  (Although the secret bits were added later in the run.  They aren’t in my earliest program.) It used to be that every page was folded in half, and if you looked inside the fold, there were a couple of places that had something hidden in there.  Most of the time, it was just solid red, however. 

There are definite differences between my two programs.  Some of the images inside are different, and the later one has more in it—a bit more explanation of the show, and more images, including a few pages of color images.  

Unfortunately, I have no idea what the current program looks like.  I should probably get one just to see. 

I know a few people have collected most of them…does anyone have better insight than I do?  @rottenwoodandwiltedsunflowers @maskedmohawk

Near as I can tell there are three “major” versions. All with different covers. Then there are reprintings with cast updates. There are at least 5 different printings total and Im sure there are many more.

Since the thistle on the cover turned silver I think the content other than personnel has remained largely static.

Worth noting, maybe, that I now have confirmed at least 4 versions of the silver thistle cover. Differentiated by personnel.

They have also recently fixed a few notable typos, such as the misspelling of "Malcolm"

Two things I noticed.

I went to see the show again tonight and was surprised by two things.

1. The eggs that spell out Paisley Sweets in the window of the candy shop are no longer there. Instead, the Paisley Sweets sign is painted on the glass window. When did this change? Am I painfully oblivious?

2. The little desiccated frog in the box in Agnes’ room has also been removed. The box is still there, and so is the poem about why the frog is pinned in the box; but said frog is missing. There is a flower in the box instead. Has this also been missing for some time?

I hadn't noticed the frog yet, but the Paisley Sweets sign changed last year. I personally love the new design, specifically the creeping vines that accompany it

Don’t forget to bring cash!

Just a friendly reminder that tipping is still greatly appreciated (and culturally expected if you are unfamiliar with American bar protocol) at Mayfair! Bartenders and other support staff depend on tips as part of their regular salary, and a party is no different. These people are working really hard to make sure that we have a great time.  Let’s show them a little appreciation! 

So make sure to tuck some cash away in your costume and tip the bartenders! 

FYI – the tips are pooled at the end of the night, so I usually just put all of my cash into one of the jars at the beginning of the night, then I don’t have to worry about it for the rest of the party.

They really work hard on selling the Speakeasy Magick show. Is it good? Anyone been?

We went to the opening night. It was one of the best magic shows I have ever seen, well worth the price. And everything is up close, personal, and defies belief.

Hello! I just found your blog and I'm a little obsessed. I was wondering if you ever saw girls play roles in Sleep No More that weren't skinny little things. Asking for a friend.

I’m not quite sure how to answer this other than to say that Sleep No More is fairly typical when it comes to large and successful Broadway/NYC productions (or film and television for that matter.) Most of the performers fit a particular body type that conforms to the current typical standard of beauty. 

Note: If you reply to this post, please do not discuss the bodies of individual people. I really don’t want that to happen on my feed. The performers are people, not objects.

I find it disconcertingly reductive to refer to the body types present in show as preferring "pretty little things." Dancers are athletes, and the body types reflect the dedicated effort and training that is required to maintain the level of physicality a show like this demands.

Were they scheduled initially and then got cancelled? I didn’t keep track. They are definitely not there now.

Upside to these kinds of weirdly random schedule shifts is that it would appear the Powers That Be are not, in fact, trying to burn out the cast with multiple doubles right before three parties.

Not that I suspect the decision stemmed from compassion or concern

I have been having this question for a very long time but was too embarrassed to ask: I don’t understand the shaving scene. I guess I could see this scene is trying to demonstrate a special bonding even tension between Duncan and Malcolm. However, I just feel odd watching a prince shaving a king’s face, and moreover, shining his shoes.

My take on it:

I don’t think it is about being historically accurate any more than Dracula, ruler of the castle, shaving Johnathan Harker’s face in Dracula.

The scene is about trust, vulnerability, and power. Shaving scenes have been used in films for years because it’s a very simple way to convey this, and it has the added tension when everyone in the audience is watching a razor literally be put to a person’s throat.

This is a gesture of trust on Duncan’s behalf, allowing his son to do this.  And a good Duncan will go through the cycle of emotions in realizing how precarious of a position he’s put himself into. I’ve seen Duncan’s act with resistance to even allowing it, followed by an almost out of body dissonance, fear, and then laughter because his son will look at him like JEEZE DAD I’M YOUR SON LET ME SHAVE YOUR FACE. Sometimes I like to think his son has done this for years and Duncan has just realized, oh shit, this guy is a man now and might want what I have.

If only Duncan had spent a bit longer contemplating how little boundaries or hesitation he gives (and it is the great tragedy of Macbeth’s Duncan to me- that his heart is so big that it does him in) to those around him, it might have been a different story for him.

The shoes feel like an afterthought– more of an icing on top or, if you wanted to go darker, like someone caring for their alcoholic relative would do to help them get presentable.

But maybe I’m way off and it’s really a commercial for nyquil. That’s just how I interpret the scene.

Also of note, I am fairly certain that Scottish heirs were not assumed by birthright. Rather they were selected. Malcolm is heir, but I would assume there is a far greater emphasis put on grooming a future king if that role is not automatically given.

Furthermore, given that Macbeth's King Duncan is a generous, noble, and honorable man, it logically follows that he would wish to instill such values on his heir-apparent. And the value of hard work and servitude as a means of humbling a man could certainly be a factor in that scene. At least, that is part of how I see it.
