It's so obvious that Voit didn't kill this lady but was like it's alright I'll solve your case for you. His whole plan to get the death penalty is because Voit knows that no matter how much empathy he has now, he has the underlying drive to escape because he doesn't want to be in prison, and if he gets free, eventually, he'll probably kill someone. And that's the crux behind my theory he's going to die/sacrifice himself in the course of hunting down The Fan. Combo of it's the only penance he can think to do + die without having to kill himself directly.

But Rossi is right, Tyler is wayyyy too hung up on his personal experiences and it's getting in the way of his profiling abilities.
