Just FYI what happened to The Selection could also happen to the Shatter Me Adaptation
Let’s just say Warner Bros. has history with not moving forward with YA dystopia.. so it still might not happen…
The Selection has had a lot of attempts and it’s not too dissimilar with Shatter Me’s journey. They’ve had TV show attempts (2-3 time they’ve tried with same network btw) and then the film with Warner Bros. And then again with Netflix that had a set director but still didn’t move to production.
After the CW failure Keira’s (author) team and fandom pushed/pitched with studios, so they were the driving force - not a whole lot of interest from the studios. Keira (author) backed out from Netflix because of creative differences (not entirely the cause but that’s what i gathered from her live streams over the years).
Shatter Me on the other hand, had 20th Century Fox for film and ABC Signature for TV (could’ve moved forward) now Warner Bros. We will see if we get third time lucky but there’s a chance it still might not happen.
BUT Shatter Me is different in story and the fandom has grown significantly and we all now how much Film and Tv studios love a built-in audience. We will have to wait how further the talks are and how willing Warner Bros are to actually adapting it since it is only rights acquired and not ‘in the works’.
I say give it 6months to a year (since Tahereh says they’re in early stages), if we have actual development updates from Tahereh then they are moving forward with it but if it’s still wishy washy and we hear nothing this time next year then it’s probably not happening (I’m clearly not a film expert but i think those who followed book to screen adaptations for years like me can understand by making this ultimatum).
- now about the Shatter Me Adaptation news -
*with what Tahereh said at the Shatter Me Fest event*
From what was said, they were in several months of talking my guess since end of last year 2025 (there was a video in October of her hesitating to answer when someone asked about an adaptation ((she usually has a set answer for this but this was different)), the time I suspected something was going on) so my guess is that it wasn’t Warner Bros. who reached out and it was Tahereh’s team for the sake of the book anniversary (my speculation dont jump me) which is why I think why she’s said Warner Bros have been a good ‘partner’ so far and why there was a lot of talks - the pitching and seeing if Tahereh could get power for adaptation I assume.
With the Variety article it seems like the team for the adaptation has had history with book to movie adaptation especially in the dystopian, fanatasy and romance department (Maze Runner, Twilight, Percy Jackson) so I see why Warner Bros. made the deal besides the built-in audience. also could be some hope for somewhat faithful adaptation if it happens.
With Tahereh executive producing - a step up to consulting producer for the tv show. This gives her the opportunity to be on set for the entire filming of the film. Tahereh has constantly said she will advocate for the fans always but how much Warner Bros. is willing to take Tahereh’s direction on things we’ll see…
