Pillars of Eternity made a brilliant move including a party member who is so unrelentingly abrasive and unpleasant that players and even the other companions can bond over how terrible he is. Phenomenally written character, completely insufferable. 10/10

Speaking as a childhood Harry Potter fan, the enduring persistence of its popularity including amongst adults is 100% because it is slop without substance.

It flirts with the idea of rebellion and emancipation from slavery but ultimately discredits those notions by having the rebel leader become a lead cop in the institution that was repressing him and by making emancipation seem silly.

It reflects the chauvinisms of a British aristocrat who offers an impossible narrative of an abused child escaping abuse through the purity of their Aryan magic blood. It’s a fantasy that doesn’t even pretend to offer catharsis or self-actualization, merely hundreds of pages of occasionally racist drivel about a special little boy who joins the SS after reforming them from the inside.

That’s why it has maintained such reverence - because it doesn’t actually offer a subversive story but the aesthetic of one while reflecting the conservative biases of the author. It speaks to a certain liberal perspective that is progressive only so far as the oppressed don’t hurt their feelings.

If JK died in 2015 no one would be making these unhinged critiques of her children's book series. People hate her now so everyone needs to agree her work became retroactively terrible. People who made HP their entire personality are embarrassed so they need to pretend the books were covert nazi propaganda the whole time.

Guess what? People who are bad can make art that is good or mediocre. Good people can make good and mediocre art then become bad/hateful/do bad things.

There's this weird thing going on where we have to collectively pretend that all problematic people are always ugly, untalented, undeserving of every win they ever scored and I'm sorry that's not real life.

The reality is JK made several ok to good quality children's books that everyone fucking loved and she sold a billion copies and people still fucking love it and buy copies because they're ok books for 12 year olds. It embarrassing seeing adults twist themselves into knots trying to deny that's what happened because they just dont like it.

So I recently finished the Rogue Trader game and it's sooooo good

The writing is genuinely comparable to Baldurs Gate 3, and the entire game is just as good if you don't mind the lack of animations and voice acting.

I had so much fun and I was obsessed with it for weeks, 10/10 game

Only bad thing is that you can't romance Argenta, you can't even try to flirt with her and have her turn you down! Let me lesbian heart at least try flirting with the Sister of Battle!
