“I guess helping someone escape a mugging these days is as common as an introduction, huh?”
Maria looked up at the man, a cautiously amused smile playing on her lips. Showing any form of emotion was something she tended to avoid during her time with SHIELD. Natasha, Bobbi and Sharon had been the exceptions in a very long list of people. Coulson and Fury may have qualified also, but that was only because they knew, unlike most of the new recruits, not to mistake Agent Hill’s kindness for weakness. It was easier to be taken seriously when Maria pretended to be a robot, but considering how they had just worked together to take down a group of Syndicate members who had attacked a young mutant girl, she assumed that this man was going to respect her for her roundhouse kick at least.
“I had it handled,” Maria commented, dusting off her hands on her trousers. Black always stained so easily, and she wrinkled her nose at it. “You might have been a little impressive. I may even be a little impressed.”
“Stopping muggings, stopping murders. Just another day in the life.”
Unlike what most people seemed to assume, Luke didn’t actually prefer to fight alone. He often did, since he wasn’t part of any fancy super-team, but having backup was always a relief. As was being the back up. So when he stumbled upon this woman taking on a few syndicate members who were trying to attack someone, he jumped in to help no questions asked.
“Yeah, that was apparent by the three people you took out before I even got there.” He replied with a soft laugh. “Wasn’t gonna just keep on walking without helping out though.” Luke unzipped his hoodie, which was basically torn to shreds now. He’d never thought he’d prefer bullets to knives, but at least they didn’t tear up clothes as bad. “Well damn, impressing a woman who can fight like you, even a little has gotta be one of the best compliments I’ve gotten.”
