Hi there! Wow, your question holds the dubious honor of "Cranquis Mail which sat in Cranquis’ inbox the longest" — I received it in mid-June of 2012, as one of the unused Questions for Cranquis submitted for the 2nd Zombietech interview I did back then. And the reason it sat in the box for SOOOO long is because I have repeatedly (I mean, 8 to 10 times) tried to reply to it — and my attempts ended up sounding tongue-tied or confuzzled, or I would end up writing myself into a host of logical paradoxes.

So now, just in time for your summer before college, here’s my best (though admittedly imperfect) attempt to answer your deep question, as a fellow Christian who has been in your shoes. [Long post ahead!]

Mice With Human Chromosomes: The Genetic Breakthrough That Could Revolutionise Medicine

Scientists have created genetically-engineered mice with artificial human chromosomes in every cell of their bodies, as part of a series of studies showing that it may be possible to treat genetic diseases with a radically new form of gene therapy.

Unlike conventional gene therapy techniques up to this point, the new process behind building these gene structures produces a 47th chromosome that does not interfere with the normal operations of the regular 46 set.

As described by Dr. Kouprina of the U.S. National Cancer Institute in Bethesda, Maryland who is involved with the project, “The idea is to take skin cells from a patient, turn them into stem cells and insert human artificial chromosomes (HACs) into these stem cells with healthy copies of the disease gene. These cells, with the extra chromosome, can then be inserted back into the patient to treat the illness.”

I cannot even begin to fathom the potential this has to treat hereditary illnesses and beyond.

Mid-stride

It's a calm and cool night in Athens as I study for two finals that represent one of the biggest steps I've ever taken. It's been 5 months since I first entertained the thought of what some are calling a complete 180.

My thoughts 5 months ago were quite similar, surprisingly. I'm more defined, more refined, and more motivated than ever before yet still anxious, still searching, realizing that no matter what I do, what I do isn't going to fill the void. This truth is joy to me, because I know now of the evidence they present of a future without boundaries. I know now that the definition I place on my life isn't my task but constant. It's a fitting analogy with the equations and formulas before me that that discover I am simply the variable quantity.

My task is not definition. It is execution. The greater my execution, the greater yield, and the potential is unlimited by the established constant.

For the first time in my experience, I clearly see a path laid out before me that depends solely on the input I put in. It's both a challenging and severely liberating revelation.

I open the door from my antechamber of hope and am in mid-stride of the step, the constant guiding my steps into the direction only it could determine.

I’m thrilled to announce that Sherpaa has raised $1.85 million. We’re now that much closer to our mission of making healthcare more accessible and more affordable. 

It’s so obvious that healthcare needs a big change. And it’s even more obvious that the current way of doing things is broken and unsustainable. But there’s a better way for the vast majority of us to experience healthcare. When the stats say that 70% of ER visits are not real emergencies and 70% of traditional office visits could be handled over the phone or via email, it was too much for me to handle. It’s always been my dream to redesign how you go to the doctor and make your life easier. Healthcare is just full of so much possibility and I truly believe it can and will be awesome. But when you don’t have a doctor you can email or call at any time when you’re in a bind, you do the best you can. You go to the ER because it’s accessible or you try and make an appointment with your doctor only to be told the first appointment is next week.

I can’t stand inefficiencies. And I can’t stand sitting around watching this broken system make everyone miserable and broke. So we’re building a company and a team to change that. We will make healthcare better. I’m confident of that. With this money, we’re stepping on the gas hiring an agile team of salespeople and developers to change healthcare. We’ve started in NYC and have plans to expand to other cities like SF, DC, and Chicago.

Resting is counter cultural. 

We're caught up in a pushy, busy society.

Hebrews 4:1-13

Therefore, since the promise of entering his rest still stands, let us be careful that none of you be found to have fallen short of it. For we also have had the good news proclaimed to us, just as they did; but the message they heard was of no value to them, because they did not share the faith of those who obeyed. Now we who have believed enter that rest, just as God has said,

“So I declared on oath in my anger,     ‘They shall never enter my rest.’”

And yet his works have been finished since the creation of the world. For somewhere he has spoken about the seventh day in these words: “On the seventh day God rested from all his works.” And again in the passage above he says, “They shall never enter my rest.”

Therefore since it still remains for some to enter that rest, and since those who formerly had the good news proclaimed to them did not go in because of their disobedience, God again set a certain day, calling it “Today.” This he did when a long time later he spoke through David, as in the passage already quoted:

“Today, if you hear his voice,     do not harden your hearts.”

For if Joshua had given them rest, God would not have spoken later about another day.There remains, then, a Sabbath-rest for the people of God; for anyone who enters God’s rest also rests from their works, just as God did from his. Let us, therefore, make every effort to enter that rest, so that no one will perish by following their example of disobedience.

For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight.Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account.

On the 7th day, God created a rest, but the people didn't believe that God alone would be enough.

Take time to stop and rest and have a conversation with God.

Refuel.

They searched everywhere for Rest when it was right there in front of them, God. In His presence is rest.

If you're going after anything besides God, you will never find rest.

We're so trapped in becasue we're afraid to miss something when all we need is God's rest.

What's pushing us?

What are we doing out of a sense of need instead of a sense of blessing?

Idolatry.

And the only thing God calls us to do with idols is to smash them."

He has spoken through Jesus Christ and he hears our desperate cries.

What does God think about our questions? 

God's not a nazi.

Does everything have to require absolute faith and certainty?

Matthew 21:22

And whatever you ask in prayer, you will receive, if you have faith.

Matthew 9:29

Then he touched their eyes, saying, 'According to your faith be it done to you.'

If you bring God a thimble, he'll probably fill it.

If you bring God a bucket, he'll probably fill it. 

Matthew 8:7-10

Jesus said to him, “I will go and heal him.”

The centurion replied, “Lord, I do not deserve to have you come under my roof. But just say the word, and my servant will be healed. For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell this one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and that one, ‘Come,’ and he comes. I say to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.”

When Jesus heard this, he was astonished and said to those following him, “I tell you the truth, I have not found anyone in Israel with such great faith.

Some of us have great faith. [Some of us are still working at it.]

Some of us cry out like the lyrics in this song, and some have completely lost faith and stopped praying because they think it isn't enough.

God loves to help the hurting. Think of the Parable of the Lost Sheep.

Mark 9:21

Jesus asked the boy’s father, “How long has he been like this?”

“From childhood,” he answered.

I do believe. 

Help me overcome my unbelief.

It's our job to com to Jesus with whatever we have. God loves it and hears it. He prefers us to be real!

A child's prayer

Dear God, I can't wait for Spring! It hasn't come yet, please don't forget!

Come to Christ as a child.

He cherishes any honest, real prayers.  

Thimble or bucket of faith."

Completely do away with things that cause you to sin. It is better to walk in righteousness without them than to walk in evil and be doomed with them.
