hi i’m seeing no one talk about this cover??? this is HAUNTING, it’s dedicated it to everyone who’s died from the coronavirus so far especially healthcare staff i just,,,
Hozier singing trad song “The Parting Glass”
Other celebrities: (goopily drip upon, of all things, “imagine”)
Us: (call for the guillotine)
Hozier: (a bittersweet lad, sings an ancient song to the departed)
Us: play this over silent, crisply shot black and white footage of the empty streets and silent landmarks. cut with shots of our drowning hospitals. An acceptable future documentary of 2020 that we will allow.
My audio processing isnt working in the brain. Can someone PLEASE tell me what the crud he’s saying because all i can make out are sounds not words
Saw your post while skimming through the reblog and did not see an answer, so for accessibility! Hozier is singing the following:
Of all the money that e’er I had / I spend it in good company
And of all the harm that e’er I done / Alas it was to none but me
For all I’ve done for want of wit / to memory now I can’t recall
So fill to me the parting glass / good night and joy be with you all.
Of all the comrades that e’er I had / they’re sorry for my going away
And of all the sweethearts that e’er I had / they’d wish me one more day to stay
But as it falls unto my lot / that I must go and you must not
I’ll gently rise and I’ll softly call / good night and joy be with you all.
when i first read the lyrics to this a year or so ago, i always thought it was a sad song (contrary to what google says about it being a pub song), and hearing this solemn and heartfelt rendition by hozier always makes me tear up
Google’s technically right, it is a pub song, but not in the sense you’re thinking. This is what I call an “end of the night” song - these tend to be somber, nostalgic, and contain references to a final drink/toast eg “the parting glass” usually either in memory of death, or in the knowledge of death to come. Others include Auld Lang Syne and Health to the Company. They’re “let’s drink to old times because we might not all meet here again” songs.
In Welsh-speaking Wales, it’s Yma o Hyd. Which actually translates to “We’re still here lol”, but it’s not a joke song. Yma o Hyd is a resistance song about how, in spite of everyone and everything that England has done and tried to do to us, we’re still here. We’re still able to go to the pub, and join together in a shared community, in Welsh. We’re still a culture that can do this. We’re still here.
It even has a verse name dropping Thatcher.

work is sending me to french training, which i have been nervous about. had the first lesson this morning. teacher told me i had beautiful pronunciation, like i'd been raised with it (i was not). dangerous ego levels for someone who can only hold conversations that sound like téléfrançais episodes
today's feedback was essentially that it's confusing to speak to me because instead of sounding like an anglo i sound like a francophone who is an idiot fhklgglh
you're like the real life version of that Paul Taylor bit

[ID: Several screenshots of tweets by user Kurt Eichenwald. They read: “"The Great Resignation" is not about people not wanting to work. It is about a dawning recognition that, for a larger and larger portion of this country, the American dream is dead, and with it, the inspiration of working toward a better future for oneself. Instead, work…/1 “…becomes not the means towards reaching an aspiration - a spouse, children, a home, vacations, personal growth, a retirement. Instead, the greed culture has turned work for millions into just a means of survival, with wages stagnant, healthcare unaffordable, insurance…. “….treated as a luxury, paid free time an impossibility, children unaffordable, homes a dream. Yes, work is important - but not without the promise of a future. Many young people see nothing but 40 years of the same, further enriching the obscenely rich. This system has… “…taught people how to survive without, because they don’t believe they will ever have. If they reasonably don’t believe they will ever be able to afford a house or to raise children, and never will have group insurance or a paid vacation, and can make it living with their… “…parents, and have already been taught by McResources (real thing) and Walmart how to apply for Food Stamps and Medicaid because those multibillion dollar corporations know they don’t pay enough for their employees to survive, and are already getting those benefits, and …. “…have the choice of just saying “forget it, im going to work on my painting or sewing or whatever, I am tired of being abused by my supervisor, I am tired of being screamed at by customers for things out of my control, I am tired of watching adults throw temper tantrums and… “…then being balled out by my company because I could have handled it better. I can survive without all of this. I can be happier without all of this. I am paid so little, my life won’t be that different.” “THAT is why we have the Great Resignation. Because we, the Boomers…. “…have endlessly sucked up the capital that could go down to the younger generations to enrich ourselves, then pushed down the debt. Entry level jobs that can be done with a high school education now demand college degrees, PLUS unpaid internship experience. So, to do most…. “…anything with the possibility of a future, younger generations have to go to college. But to do it, they have to load up on debt. Then we sneer at them when they talk about how their terrible wages and horrible debt make home buying etc. impossible. Oh sure, the children of… “…the rich are fine. And their parents sneer “maybe stop buying avocado toast” as if a single pleasure in life equals the cost of a home. All of this starts and stops with greed and corporations. Pay more, and stop pulling up the ladder. Not all jobs need college degrees…. “…many years ago, I interviewed Bill Clark, then the National Security Advisor under Reagan. After the interview, I asked him some background, and asked what college he got his degree from. Sheepishly, he said he didnt. Only had a high school degree. Thats the 1980s - the…. “…National Security Advisor for the President of the United States had only a high school education. But I will bet anything, to be the social media voice at Wendy’s, no matter how funny you are, you have to be a college graduate with internships in social media etc etc. Not … “…all jobs need college degrees. Companies need to stop requiring them for jobs that don’t. And they need to start paying fair wages. And treating people like human beings. People never wanted to “work.” They wanted to invest their effort toward living a better life. And if work doesn’t do that, if work merely makes life worse to people who have been taught how to survive without wages so that McDonalds and Walmart et al can shift their wage costs onto taxpayers, then a Great Resignation was inevitable.” End ID.]

DILUTING ESSENTIAL OILS WITH WATER DOES ABSOFUCKINGLUTELY NOTHING
this has been a PSA from a very grumpy herbalist
Please elaborate so people know exactly why this kind of misinformation is dangerous and dont just brush you off as paranoid or whatever
Water doesn’t dilute oil. Very basic chemistry.
Anyone who wants to think I’m paranoid is welcome to have an argument with my degree in biology and years of herbalist training… I’m too tired.
I have distinct memories of learning that water and oil don’t mix..in KINDERGARTEN. I was 5!!! We took water with blue food colouring and had to try and ‘mix’ it with vegetable oil. Not possible without an emulsifier. If 5-6 year old me can inderstand that, and how emulsifiers work (thanks magic school bus) then so can witches who are literally telling people to do unsafe things.
Also please please please don’t put essential oils in water you intend to drink/use for food preparation. If you are after the properties of mint/lemon/whatever please use the actual food/herb! Essential oils (generally!) are not foodsafe and it’s dangerous to ingest them
Actually, fun fact, NO essential oils have been certified as food safe.
But there aren’t regulations stopping certain cultist companies (looking at you MLM) from putting “certified food safe” on the label, even though no actual certification exists. What they mean is, their own company has deemed them safe. Not actually a governing body or regulatory oversight.
There also does not exist grades of EOs. There is no actual standard for “food grade” “therapeutic grade” “pharmacy grade” or whatever they’re spouting now. That is entirely just marketing information put on the bottle by the person who wants your money.
If you need the properties of an herb and you want to use it externally and don’t feel the plant itself packs enough punch… look into tinctures, not EOs.
Extracts are generally the term if you’re looking for food safe. They’re used in baking and candy making and the food industry in general. An extract packs a powerful punch because the flavor is concentrated so it doesn’t throw off the amount of liquid in baking. You’ll often find vanilla, peppermint, almond and lemon at the local grocery stores, but specialty stores that sell to bakers have a whole lot more. You can even get lavender extract. I keep peppermint extract around because it’s helpful for many things.
Oil infusions can be made at home using herbs and a good culinary oil. Rosemary oil is a popular one for cooking or bread dipping. You just take a bunch of rosemary, dried or fresh, and plop it in some olive oil and leave it be for a couple of weeks. But this can be done with any herb, flower or resin. (Putting the herb in and gently heating the oil will give you an infusion faster if you need something quickly)
Tinctures are a similar process but you put the herb in alcohol (or vinegar) instead of oil. Not as good for sauteing but I make those to take orally or even to rub on sore muscles. Salves which blend the tincture into a more solid oil are also good for muscle rubs.
Tisanes (or teas) are of course just dropping the herb (dried of fresh) into some hot water and letting it steep. You could use a culinary extract or a tincture in a tea though the first would probably throw the flavor off. Peppermint extract helps with a cough. You don’t put essential oils into teas because that could kill you.
It bears repeating: Always mix essential oil with a skin-safe oil before letting it touch skin. Also, never put even diluted essential oils on a child or animal. Children and pets have died from well-meaning people trying to treat them with essential oils. Pets can also get sick or die from breathing in essential oils in misters around the house.

It’s important to understand, the Satanic Temple is an activist group.
They don’t worship Satan - they don’t actually believe in Satan. They call themselves Satanists because Satan is the antagonist in Christian theology.
They are actively trying to promote the separation of church and state, and prevent the US from becoming a theocracy. And their method is genius: they’re fighting religion with religion.
Essentially, they go up against religious-based legislation by petitioning for their own religion to also be represented, since separation of church and state means all religions must be equally represented by the government, or none are. If only one is, then it’s getting special privileges and that’s not allowed.
For real, I think there’s multiple places where town councils used to have some local religious leader open their public meetings with a prayer, until the local Satanic Temple volunteered. They generally sue when turned down, and then when the court tells the town you let the satanists pray or you stop having prayers at government meetings… they stop having prayers at government meetings.
And I have to say, as a Christian who doesn’t want the church within ten city blocks of the government, I admire their activism.
