Tucked inside one of Ichika's current case files was a little cat-shaped sticky note, dyed in a hint of coffee for a bit of fun. Written on it is a short yet sweet note in bold pink ink:

Come to Nii-san's agency when you're done with work today. Kurenai convinced Nii-san to take a mini-vacation for the first in his life, so it'll be just us for once. See you then! --LWK

Ah, something nice to look forward to when the work day ended! Also it must be the season for miracles if Julius Will Kresnik actually called off for a day. Alas the mystery of what awaited Ichika would have to wait until she did her part for the day.

Although if she did come earlier than expected, the surprise wouldn't need further prep; it woke up early for this. So early Julius would've said something if he weren't at least two cities away.

Whenever Ichika chose to arrive, the doors to the Kresnik Detective Agency were unlocked despite the "Closed Until 2026/07/25" sign hanging from the left door handle. As promised by the note, one step inside and if not for the sound of clinking plates coming from the back area, the only company in this normally lively building would've been the lights overhead.

Once Ichika stepped a single foot into the back room though, she'd find herself swept off her feet and into the comfy rollout office chair which normally stood behind Julius' desk. No time to ask questions as the chair is soon rolled to the table where the surprise awaits.

That surprise? A black frosted cake with white frosting roses meticulously aligned along the base. Atop this cake is another ring of frosted roses, but that's not the main feature. The real show stopper is the fist-sized candy black cat head poking out from the center of the roses, complete with tiny frosted whiskers, a gumdrop pink nose, and two white chocolate eyes with a hint of dark chocolate for the pupils.

And it's all for her!

"Glad you came Ichika," Ludger finally rounds out from behind the chair to address his lovely guest. "You're probably wondering what the occasion is. And honestly... I just felt today was special for some reason. So why not whip up something nice?"

The coincidental timing of Julius' first ever vacation on the same day was a welcome, albeit unplanned, surprise. Not like he'll complain!

"Anyway, dig in! I hope you like it!"

a nervous laugh bubbles up, his cheeks growing flush hearing her speak the description back so casually. he'd been insulted, hurt by the cruel reception to his theories, and it tumbled out of him before grace dared to stop and think. because anger is easier. it burns an intense flame that no one dares touch—it'll keep people from getting too close to him, to seeing too much. but his flame has been snubbed out along with all his funding so where did that anger and the stubbornness get him?

"what you call admirable has branded me arrogant," he says, dejected. grace slumps down into the bench again, resting his elbows on his legs, mouth pressing to his fists. his leg bounces. eyes remain affixed to the water reflecting the sky—the fake stars that flicker, their galaxies that no longer exist in hues of blue—and feels exhaustion weighing him down.

finally, he returns his attention to her and he does a double take, slipping his glasses back on; he doesn't find the same look as his colleagues but instead a smirk that's anything but mocking. for a moment, grace doesn't reply. instead motioning idly to the bench with a silent invitation to join him.

"yeah, i uhm… that would be me." his lip quirks in a small but proud smile. "surprise, the guy who essentially spat in the faces of the scientific community spends his free time teaching kids." grace will argue that kids are easier to deal with than most of the adults here. it's not something he was even aware he had the patience for yet there were a few that latched to him and he found it difficult to deny them.

they're so receptive. they're inquisitive. his knowledge is never questioned with malice but unbridled curiosity. maybe it does boost his frail ego to be adored but when those wide eyes look up at him and to the sky in wonder, grace can't help feeling altruistic about their futures. this should be nurtured—these children might become the black shores' next researchers. "i can't say i'm good at it but they keep coming back so i guess that counts for something, right?"

─「银月」─  the pride he held in his belief translated into frustration and anger when questioned and dismissed. aureate orbs watched the man who defended his own theory to the point of getting rejected not only what he proposed but his entirety as a whole. she did hear it with her own ears — the word arrogant — said by one of the researchers presented when they argument itself blew up. her gaze didn't linger on his stress for too long, allowing him that moment of privacy to reflect the consequences of it all. when her voice came once again, it was quiet yet unwavering. a steady tone. a fact observed.

                " most, if not all researchers and scientists of black shores are working to solve a problem that had destroyed every scientific observations and logics as they know it. new theories and point of views are new variables to the equations they already cannot solve. new variables mean more complications, and more complications mean they're steps further to answers. " the lament changed everything about this world, and they had little to no tolerance of possibilities that things are even more complicated than it already was. she believed they directed some of that despair at him.

                his invitation was accepted with a smile, and she moved soundlessly even as she settled next to him on the bench. amber hues turned to him once more, able to catch that proud smile gracing his lips. it was a different kind of pride than what he held for science. a softer kind. more human.

                " it's a pleasant kind of surprise. we all could use more of that. " now that they were sitting next to one another, the angle would allow him to see the item within her hands. cradled in gloved hands was a star fashioned out of papers. the craftsmanship was far from delicate, yet she was handling it like it was something precious. there were wrinkles at the edges, a few streaks of colors plastered about and a handwriting that she was sure he would recognize. after all, it was one of his students who gave this to her. he taught them names of the stars, who would've thought.

                " a good teacher isn't defined by knowledge alone. you've taught them many things, yes, but you've also given them something others weren't able to in the face of an apocalypse. " she held the star up high, watching it shine among the fake ones dotting the etheric sea covering their sky. " you gave them hope. hope for the future they once believed they might not have when the lament took everything from them. the future all of us at black shores are trying to protect. "

                aureate hues turned back to him, and the smile she gave him was of genuine gratitude. she lowered the paper star for him to see, the crooked points catching the light like the ones above them.

                " that, i believe, would make you a good teacher, dr. ryland grace. "

─「美沙夜」─  the CHERUBIM might be focusing on the book in her lap, and though it didn't look like she would notice a certain someone moving from the usual spot he usually would be lounging about ( away from most of her hounds, to be exact ), she actually did. despite how subtle he usually was with his approaches and even more so in battle, for some odd reasons, he was incredibly transparent when it was just them ( again, the hounds do not count. ) she found that rather adorable, if anything.

                and a cruel mischievous master that she was, misaya pretended to not see those big puppy eyes he was obviously directing at her with all his might for a few minutes. a part of her wanted to see HOW LONG he was going to hold out before actually voicing his demands out loud, but in the end, she was weak to puppy eyes no matter who they came from. and especially from him, but do not tell him that.

                crimson hues flicked towards him, lips curling into a smile and free hand extended to land itself atop his head. a ruffle through his locks, and a gentle pat followed in the same beat as a knowing smile.

                " what ? do you want a treat or a walk ? "
