lunagoddesoftheconstellations:
ââ- âA pleasure to meet you, Astrid,â Loki murmured, though he couldnât help but feel as if that name wasnât accurate. He couldnât really put his finger on it, but Astrid seemed exceptionally genuine right up until the moment she gave her name. It was such a slight deviation that no one would notice. No one but Loki, that was, because Loki was the best of the best when it came to sniffing out and detecting lies.
But, for the time being, they were strangers, and he wasnât about to call her out on a hunch.Â
Besides, he was much more interested in the chance to actually battle a Valkyrie, even if she was only in training. So, without a second thought, Loki pushed himself up and followed the woman out onto the sparring fields. Her trainer looked at them with shock and, perhaps, just a little bit of horror. Most people werenât brave enough to challenge one of the princes to a friendly sparring match and Loki had to imagine that the Valkyrie usually trained with one another rather than other warriors.
Holding out his hand, he conjured a golden staff that shimmered in the sun. There wasnât anything particularly special about it. Not even the color stood out considering where they were. Asgard was dripping in gold, especially the capital, Gladsheim.Â
It wasnât a very intimidating looking weapon, but aside from a pair of daggers or a set of throwing knives, Loki was the most deadly with a longer weapon in his hands. For some reason, the intermediate length of most swords always threw him off. He never was much of a swordfighter, and often suffered for it.
He didnât even get a chance to say anything before Astrid lashed out at him. Loki caught the tip of her blade easily with the staff and using his strength behind the weapon, he shoved her backward.Â
In reality, Loki and Astrid seemed to be pretty evenly matched for a while. As she assessed, Loki was a cunning warrior who didnât just rely on his skills with a weapon or his strength to guide him through battle. While he did withhold himself from using magic, he calculated every step he took and often switched things up at the last second to disorient his partners. What they were expecting was never what they got.
Loki landed a few solid blows on Astrid, but for every blow he landed, she returned the favor, and neither of them managed to take the other down long enough for a decisive victory to be declared. He wasnât really sure just how long theyâd been at it, but he could feel himself getting tired.
Lokiâs duels never usually latest this long. For the most part, Loki was faster than the majority of his opponents, and he was able to take them down with a mixture of speed, quick attacks, and simple application of wits, but Astrid? Oh, she seemed to know just how to match every single one of his steps.
At least until she managed to disarm him. How she managed to pull his staff out of his hands, he couldnât quite process in the split second that it happened, but he quickly found his weapon on the ground behind her and her sword pointed at his throat. He could have continued without a weapon, but that was a foolish move, one only made by someone who was unwilling to lose out of desperation to protect oneâs life or our of embarrassment for admitting defeat.
Loki, however, held up his hands in surrender. âI yield,â he announced, loud enough for Astrid and those who gathered around to witness their long-winded battle to hear.
The other aspiring Valkyrie were quite easy to beat, apart from a select few. Loki was different from them however. She noticed that all the rumours she had heard about the prince were true. The man was fast. He matched her speed perfectly and he calculated every move carefully. She was glad she had challenged him. He was a good opponent for her. A real challenge.
Every blow Loki landed, she retaliated quickly. Finally, she saw an opening. She pushed her sword between the staff and his body before yanking sharply. The staff flew out of his hands. Luna saw as it landed behind her. She pointed her sword at his throat and waited for his next move. She smiled when he surrendered and slid her sword back in its sheath. She took a couple of deep breaths to calm down after the fight. Adrenaline still surging through her body.
Luna looked around the field as Lokiâs statement had attracted quite a lot of attention. Only then, did she realise that the training had probably ended ages ago. All of them spectating their battle instead. Luna sighed. She turned back to Loki and gave a small curtsey
âThank you very much for battling me, Prince Loki. It was an intense fight. One I can learn from a lot. I hope we can be sparring partners again in the future.â she ended with a smile, looking at him.
The trainer quickly approached them both, making a deep bow to LokiÂ
âApologies, your Majesty. I hope Astrid didnât inconvenience you? Weâre at an odd number of girls at the moment, so she didnât have a sparring partner... Iâm grateful you could step in.â she said.
Luna did her best to keep her face in check. She couldnât help but feel a little bit insulted. Sure, she was just a trainee but she was also top of her group. As the match had shown they were quite evenly matched. She wasnât just a stupid girl...although she did want to make others believe that. So, she just had to shrug it off and keep her face in check. No need to make a big fuss.Â
Luna walked away from the scene and towards her friend, Edith. She gave her a big hug, bouncing them up and down. The behaviour made both girls laugh.Â
âAstrid, did I just see that correctly? You challenged Prince Loki to a friendly sparring match...and won?!â she said, still mid laugh.
Luna grinned âYes, you saw that correctly...canât quite believe it myself. Heâs a very skilled fighter. I thought I was going down a couple of times during the match. It was a close call. â Luna praised.
The girls had only moved about 20 steps away from Loki and the trainer. The other Valkyries enveloped her. They quickly started asking questions.
âHow did you beat Prince Loki?â
âWhy didnât you battle Thor?âÂ
âHow did Thor look, how was his hair?!â
âYesss Astrid, tell us!!â
Luna shook her head softly âThey both looked fine. I didnât go for Thor, because Prince Loki is the more tactical fighter. A battle not just in might but also in wits. Which it turned out to be.â she retorted
Luna looked between the girls, trying to gauge Lokiâs reaction.Â
