My first ever fic is up!

Jax finally lets himself be vulnerable for a second time and finds out that maybe the word isn’t out to get him.

I’ve been saying that Jax is an abuse victim for the longest time and nobody believed me.

Holy shit I’ll never get over just how me she really is. Even down to the type of abuse experienced by her mother and her issues surrounding hugs.

It’s so sickening and degrading to be hugged by the person who is actively abusing and destroying you. Emotional abuse isn’t fucking cute that shit destroyed me, it’s become foundational to who I am as a person and people who haven’t gone through it won’t understand.

That’s why Jax is so hated and I will stand on that.

Aphobia in the Alastor Shipping Fandom

As an Alastor fan and multishipper, who is also aroace, I cannot help but notice how aphobic some of you get in the process of trying to defend your right to ship Alastor. We live in an aphobic/amanormative society. Therefore, I understand that a lot of you might not be doing it on purpose. It is just things you have picked from the environment, so I am just going to point out the ones that have been getting on my nerves recently.

"Aroace people can still have sex/date". Aroace is a spectrum, so this is something that is true for some people on the spectrum. In fact, the origin of this phrase was to protect members of the aroace community who were in relationships or had sex from exclusionists who argued that they did not belong in the community if they did those things. It was a phrase created by and for members of the community. It was not meant to be used as a way to invalidate members of the community who neither desired nor wanted to do those things. It was not meant to turn into "asexual people can still have sex and have sex all the time". An actual phrase that I saw someone use to defend writing smut about Alastor. A phrase that I have seen getting used more and more in a way that implies that the only good aroaces are the ones that can pass as allo on some level. Averse/repulsed aroaces are then relegated to a stereotype about aroaces. Averse/repulsed aroaces did not fight exclusionists to make sure that indifferent/favourable aroaces were not unfairly kicked out of the community, to end up having a phrase created to support members of our community being used to be aphobic against us. It would be like if, after fighting against the idea that only gold star lesbians (lesbians who have never slept with men) are the true lesbians, people turned around and started claiming that lesbians can sleep with men and do it all the time, and those who don't are a stereotype. If you do not fully understand that phrase, stop using it. In fact, people need to stop using it until it isn't being used against members of the aroace community.

"Alastor is straight" Speaking of other things that aroaces have fought and in some cases are still fighting exclusionists about, Alastor is not straight. Aroace, aromantic and asexual people are not straight. Aroaces are straight is the argument that was used by exclusionists to try to exclude aroaces from the LGBTQIA+ community and even from Pride. Calling Alastor straight erases his identity as a queer man. I don't care if you think Alastor is more comfortable with women or is better suited to date women. You can do it without erasing his queer identity by calling him straight. The word you are looking for is heteromantic asexual. It is ridiculous to call him straight just because you want to make an argument for why he should be shipped more with women.

"So aroace people don't want to be loved/deserve love" This is the one I hate the most. It is also the most aphobic one to me. This is the one that is used to pressure aroace people when they refuse to get into romantic/sexual relationships. The idea that they will never be loved or experience love is usually nicely paired with the idea of dying alone and miserable. This is something I have seen more than once used as a defence for shipping Alastor. It is so carelessly said while ignoring the implications that platonic and familial love are meaningless compared to romantic love. The idea that true love can only be experienced in a romantic/sexual relationship, and that there is no love outside of it. Are you people incapable of loving your friends/family because you are not in a relationship with them? Do you not experience love from your family and friends? If you do, then why would you imply that the only way for an aroace person to love and experience love is to get into a relationship? The first statement I mentioned could be someone overusing the phrase, the second statement that I mentioned could be someone just not knowing the right word and the negative history attached to calling aroace people straight. This particular statement is just aphobia. I am going to just call it out for what it is whenever I see it from now on.

Ship what you want, but remember that you are dealing with a real sexuality when defending your right to ship. Real people are being represented by that orientation that you hurt when you are being carelessly aphobic because of a fictional character.

That first point hits so close to home.

All my love to my fellow aroaces who do want to date and/or have sex, totally valid, but as someone with zero interest in or desire for those things, the overuse (and misuse) of 'aroaces can still date and have sex' feels almost invalidating to me and several other averse aroaces I know. It's like people forget that the phrase describes a possibility—aroaces can date and/or have sex—and not a strict rule—that aroaces do have sex and date.

Yes. We can do all that.

But that doesn't mean that all aroaces choose to or want to.

And if a fictional aro/ace character has no interest in dating or sex, that's not bad or stereotypical representation. That's just representation of one of the many points where one may fall on the spectrum.

In fact, the only bad aroace rep I've seen is when a character is labeled as being favourable to sex and romance, only to then be portrayed exactly the same as allo characters. Sadly this happens a lot in fandom. Some of it may be a lack of understanding and not intentional or malicious, but some certainly feels like the 'character is aroace' label is tagged on as a get-out-of-jail-free card. 'No no, I swear they're aroace, they're just favourable!' when the character is actively horny on main and pining like the protagonist of a hallmark movie.

That's not how it works. Aroaces who date and have sex are still aroace and their experiences are not the same as an allo's. And it hurts when I keep running into stuff that claims to portray an aroace experience but doesn't.

And it's always excused with 'aroaces can date and have sex'.

That phrase is not an excuse. It's not supposed to be an excuse. It was never supposed to be used against the aroace community. And it was never meant to make some aroaces feel alienated and excluded.

I'm joining in on hijacking this post (just a little bit) to say that this is everything to me. Fandom spaces tend to focus so hard on shipping that anyone who doesn't want that is "attacking shippers" and "arrogant of the ace/aro spectrum" even when it's someone just wanting to depict a character as ace/aro. It's even worse when the character is canonically ace/aro. The worst fandoms for this that I've seen are Hazbin Hotel with Alastor (who is implied to be aro as well as ace and repulsed) and The Walking Dead with Daryl Dixon (who the actor and producer confirmed was ace but has a very tentative but positive view on romance. He's even had sex once (once in over 11 seasons of the show mind you) so he is also tentatively sex positive as well though he is still confirmed as asexual

All of this is to say that fandoms can be the worst environments for asexuality/aromantisism bc of everyone's incapability to take off the shipping goggles for long enough to spare some basic human decency to those who don't enjoy that

It's gotten to the point that I completely avoid fics with the tag "___ is on the asexual/aromantic spectrum" because I know 9 times out of 10 the author only learned that phrase to justify making an aro/ace character allo

It's utterly baffling to me that people are so insistent on it too you don't see this kind of thing nearly as often with lesbian or gay characters. I've never seen "___ is on the nonbinary spectrum" used as an excuse to portray a character as cisgender. It's just absolutely vexing to me and I will never understand why people are so insistent about making characters who don't want to experience sex/romantic relationships, especially when there are so many other important dynamics out there to explore

Do you think velvette is crying in the teaser because she’s been “forced” to betray the other two vees?

I’m just rambling here and I really don’t have much to base this off but the vees ARE going to face internal Conflict this season, that’s pretty much guaranteed.

Vel seems under the impression that she’s “the backbone of the vees”. She clearly looks happy when Alastor recognises her (and val’s) role in the vees in Stayed Gone when he comments that Vox would be nothing without the other Vees. Whilst Velvette obviously had bigger fish to fry at the overlord meeting, she seems to not hold any animosity towards Alastor in the same way that the other Vees do. This is a direct contrast to Vox.

Vox obviously believes himself to be the leader of the Vees and the other overlords based on Once we get up there: “We’re the biggest fish in Hell”. Vox also has this rivalry with Alastor that he seems to have involved Valentino in. Valentino comments “someone who owes us much more than money”. Vox is the one who desires to be more than an Overlord, the other Vees support it because they support him.

In Once we get up there, Val and Vel seem to have only trivial goals in relation to conquering heaven— Velvette wants Angel wing dresses and Valentino wants what he usually wants. Valentino seems closer to Vox than Velvette. This isn’t to say that they aren’t all friends because they are and I do believe they genuinely love and care for each other. But there’s only so far love and care can take you.

From the teasers it looks like the Vees are going to 3 v 1 Alastor. Vox and Valentino look happy in this fight. Velvette does not. I think Velvette might point out that having backup to fight a clearly Injured overlord isn’t a good look. It makes all three Vees look weak and cowardly. Maybe Vel attempt to stop Vox and Val?
