this album is my other favorite  of the year so far.  the more you listen to it the more you get out of it.  this first song off the album is a great example.

just when I was sure alabama shakes had the best album all year, like really sure, I hear two albums this past week that make me rethink that bold ridiculous statement.  this is the first and I am still sifting through this mixture of jazz, beats, raps and singing.   every song makes me want to hit repeat but as soon as I heard the opening of this song though I knew I would be posting it. and to find out they have a dope video??!?!?!  what fortune. 

basically this group consists of chance the rapper and the band he song writes with.  instead of releasing a follow up to acid rap, he lets his friends take front and center and they drop this.

i’ve already posted a lot about this song that for the official video I am going to just lift what mike katzif of npr said:

“inside out,” is the kind of song that seeps through your skin and enters the bloodstream — thanks to that compact drum groove, those shimmering swells of synths, and plinking piano stabs that envelop britt daniel's gruff voiced-turned-soulful falsetto.  and at the heart of the song is daniel's existential ponderings on love as a gravitational force of attraction, and the cyclical passage of time.  “time's gone inside out / time gets distorted with this intense gravity / I don't got time for holy rollers,” he opens.  even six months later, “inside out” has demonstrated its staying power as one of Spoon's most memorable songs, no matter the setting — be it a stripped-down performance, or even being covered by bon iver's justin vernon.  today, spoon released a new music video for the song, this time directed by leBlanc + cudmore.  opening with a recreation of they want my soul's album cover, the camera glides through a series of slow-motion tracking shots that depict some bizarre lynch-ian vignettes: a somber married couple in a kitchen; a masked robbery; a brutal fistfight during a party's waning hours; and many more dreamlike scenes.  it's a wonderfully crafted and evocative video that matches the song's musical and emotional searching.

this is how you make a music video.  I just don’t understand why more musicians aren’t using music videos to their full potential.  make something interesting that you can’t wait  to share with your friends.  this is the first song off what is my favorite album I’ve heard in a few years.  every song sounds different but still of the same band, the lyrics are extremely affecting and the music is sublime.

oh and its star wars day so this is especially fitting.

I was going through my voice memos (’tis the season of writing-more-for-the-record after all) and here’s a jam I found that I wrote shortly after arriving to Montreal. I had spent the whole night driving 9 hours from Philly to Quebec because planes are useless in a snow storm. 

I listened to Luscious Jacksons “Ladyfingers” on repeat because I’m like 20 years late to the party and just realized how much I like that song. Then I listened to that one song “Hey lazy giiiirls and laid back booooyz (eating orange popsicles…!)” 

Then I listened to silence and just drove and thought about the white static nothing of being. 

Then I listened to Madonna’s greatest hits, and it occurred to me that she is really underrated and downplayed as a vocalist! “Like A Prayer” is kind of hard to sing. 

And then I arrived to Montreal and was promptly locked up in a winter prison for like…ever and the dog wouldn’t go outside and I got washed up in waves of missing the teenage anguish of waiting for something to happen and the restless hope and overripe peachy-ness of summertime. So I wrote this while testing out the new korg electribe (which is pretty nice, btw!). I will finish by saying Bless You, iPhone 4, for being the all-in-one recording device this lazy bum needs.

I had some friends over the other day... er at 3am, and I put on some spoon and some idiot (my extremely opinionated and loquacious roommate) said they want my soul was their worst album.  I argued that any album that has songs of the caliber of “do you” and “inside out” is already close to a masterpiece! inside out is a song that hits me hard on some kind of level.  in its original form it is a haunting and contemplative piece but this justin vernon cover doubles down on those feelings.

spoon is actually releasing a bunch of remixes of this song.  strokes drummer fab moretti has an interesting if not fully successful remix.  I agree with tom breihan of stereogum who said, “it has to be an intimidating thing to remix spoon.  you have to know, somewhere deep within yourself, that there’s no way you’re going to improve on the original; an interesting take is the best you can hope for.”  this one is by tycho, whose music I must post soon, and I think it succeeds on being interesting.  I’m a big fan, his stuff is so dreamy/trippy

ohhh boy.  I cannot wait for this album to drop.  it will be the soundtrack to my summer.  I woke up to KCRW playing this song which means I woke up and started dancing in my room.

good music comes out of iceland.  sigur ros, bjork... and really beautiful videos.  this band is also from that island country, though their name is from a very different island, hawaii.  my best friend told me in an email that, “they’ll be big by fall.”  we’ll see.  either way I will be listening to them way past that.

I met this guy at low end theory in LA a few weeks back.  my friends and I went mainly to see him so it was so cool to meet him and he slayed it.  been listening to this album nonstop since.  its great for sleeping, writing, running, hiking, hitting the beach, the drive home after the beach and especially having a kick back with the homies.  not a lot of music you could say that about.  this song is apparently inspired by the deaths of three young girls during a hit and run.  knowing that, it makes the song and video even more beautiful.

one of my favorite bands of all time are doves, out of Manchester.  while they are on hiatus 2/3 of the group, andy and jez williams, released an album under the name black rivers.  it's funny because even without the lead signer they still completely sound like doves, which is great.   this is my favorite song off a great record
