A photo montage captured during a solar eclipse over the Marshall Islands in July 2009. The beautiful image shows the solar corona that makes up the sun’s ‘atmosphere’ in amazing detail as the sun passes behind the Moon. (Source)

The source given here is a Daily Fail article, but this deserves proper attribution. The photographer behind this image (and many, many more) is Milosav Druckmüller – and he is, in my opinion, the greatest eclipse photographer in the world.

Things you’re seeing here, by the way… The long streamers that are the Sun’s corona are more than just the Sun’s atmosphere. They’re the source of the solar wind, which fills our entire solar system, causing space weather. A hot plasma of charged particles flowing from the sun out into space, heated to millions of degrees by magnetic Alfvén waves. Material from those streamers eventually gets caught in the magnetic fields of planets, and causes aurorae as it crashes into the atmosphere, breaking molecules apart.

The red colour you can see is ionised hydrogen in solar flares, leaping from the Sun’s surface. Those flares are big enough to swallow Earth whole. The looping magnetic field lines you can see in the corona are what causes them (also causing sunspots). It’s a very specific colour caused by emission known as H-alpha, which also happens to be my favourite colour.
