saturn is african turquoise jasper :)

i have been given permission (from @davivin) to yap about jade… ohhh goodness the floodgates have been opened.

let’s start with the cultural significance!

jade has obviously been around since the forming of all minerals and crystals and stuff but it has been important to Asian culture for thousands of years. literally 7,000 - 9,000 years. so. why is jade so culturally important?

jade is more than just a pretty stone. in Chinese culture, it represented things like purity, moral integrity, royal authority, protection from harmful spirits, and more. in Vietnam, it represents around the same: purity, prosperity, and protection. in other Asian cultures, it can be seen as a symbol of status and wealth. if anyone wants to add anything to this let me know in the comments :) i have not done particularly extensive research on this (i need to do more…)

now! we get into the geology.

there are two forms of jade: nephrite jade and jadeite.)

jadeite is a sodium aluminum silicate, (NaAlSi2O6). it belongs to the pyroxene mineral group.

nephrite jade is a calcium magnesium iron silicate, (Ca2(Mg, Fe)5Si8O22(OH)2). it belongs to the amphibole mineral group.

the primary difference between the two is that jadeite is more rare (i think?) and nephrite jade is more common. they’re also formed in two different ways i can’t remember off the top of my head 🥲

jadeite is slightly harder on the mohs scale, ranging about 6.5 - 7.0. nephrite jade is about 6.0 - 6.5, slightly softer. jadeite is pretty tough (different than hardness) but nephrite jade is tougher than jadeite because of the interlocking fiber structure. jadeite has a glass-like luster, and nephrite jade has a waxy luster. for colors, jadeite ranges in vivid greens, lavender, blue, yellow, pink, and white. nephrite ranges in sage green, olive green, brown, black, and creamy white. jadeite is rarer than nephrite.
