This is such a cool juxtaposition!

Steve's writing was still rough, but Nancy was both happy to read it and happy to help him make it better. She was able to approach it in a positive and encouraging way rather than simply criticizing it, and she still addressed the flaws while asking Steve to explain things like the connection he was drawing between his game and his grandfather's experience in battle.

I feel this is how she wants her partner to approach reading her articles as well. Give me your thoughts and help me polish, but still be my biggest cheerleader. That is something that is totally doable. Nancy and Steve are good at that, actually, and I love how Steve respects her expertise when it comes to writing enough to seek her opinion.

Fandom will pretend it’s the more progressive feat to cut out a woman entirely from the romantic triangle she’s the very center of and instead ship the two guys together cuz love triangles are always useless and serve no narrative purpose and straight women ppl are icky and then when you raise questions about this they’ll just go wait no this is actually the more feminist move believe us! it’s better that her own desires are completely disregarded and she’s sidelined from the story that was built around her it’s so much more feminist for her to be devoid of any romantic interest in anyone ever and to be a hardcore independent girlboss who ends up by the end of the story with absolutely no one by her side and no one to care about what she wants and to support her emotionally cuz that would make her soft and vulnerable and needy and also icky but no we swear thinking that isn’t sexist either it’s more sexist if she was allowed to have any feelings of her own at all

Compare that to how Caitlin Schneiderhan wrote Jonathan and Nancy's dynamic in the Nancy book:

Nancy has internalized so much of Jonathan's negativity that she has a critical voice in her head that sounds like Jonathan and repeats his nasty comments.

Do you think, after writing this, Schneiderhan would say in an interview that Jonathan and Nancy would come together again in the future and maybe get married? I doubt it.

Also, we all assumed that Jonathan's confession about donating Nancy's pink sweater must have been written by a man, since it was so diabolical. However, Kate Trefry and Caitlin Schneiderhan are credited as the writers for episode 6.

We're right when we say that only a woman would understand how deplorable that would be - and I think that's the point. I think we're supposed to understand that he was a terrible boyfriend who crossed some serious boundaries. They didn't add this detail lightly.

It's also very important to note that Nancy admitted to hating The Clash. This is a small detail that would normally not matter in real life (you can absolutely date someone with a different taste in music). However, these characters aren't real people. These little details hold much more significance for a character within a story.

To Jonathan, The Clash represents his love for his brother, who is the most important person in his life. The band helped save Will.

And Nancy? Nancy hates it. The subtextual implications of this is that Nancy doesn't understand or appreciate the connection that binds Jonathan and Will together. Since this connection is so fundamental to who Jonathan is, Nancy's confession creates an irreconcilable difference between the two.

So what is the point of this whole rant? It's comforting to me to know that someone in the writers room agreed with us, at least on some level. And I, for one, am now running away with the conclusion that all of the good bits of Stranger Things were written by Kate Trefry, Caitlin Schneiderhan, and Ross Duffer's ex wife, Leigh Janiak.

the suffer brothers: yeah so we introduced this plot point of having a bunch of pregnant ladies being held captive and poisoned. and then not a single character suggested checking if they were alive before they exploded the plane of existance where they were. also we killed one of the only two women of colour we had, our main girl might be dead, we didnt let our main girl have a proper reunion with her bestie, our other woman of colour was treated as a sassy one-liner, our main girl never got to break free from the control of men and instead committed suicide and we broke up our lesbian couple who got together off screen

One thing about me is that I will immediately lose respect for people who want fewer main female characters in a work. Criticize the writing, that’s great, but to erase her??? That turns my stomach a little. That makes me scrunch up my face in disgust. Respect immediately lost, idgaf.

I wanted Patty. I wanted Karen. I wanted Holly and Erica and Max and Kali and El and I wanted them well-written. I did not get them well-written, but I couldn’t conceive of wanting to erase any of them.
