pairing: bakugou katsuki x reader
synopsis: you were happy, he seemed happy, so why is it you’re about to break up with him? well after a certain dinner with friends it led you to question your relationship with bakugou as it seems everybody still thinks he should’ve ended up with her.
you were everything she wasn’t.
down to the hair and the quirks you didn’t share, if she had been kinder would he be looking at her the way he was looking at you now?
because gods why did it have to be you— you weren’t even particularly special. not the strongest, not the richest, not the prettiest, not even the most social or anything at least in her opinion.
so what was it that made him choose you over her was the question that lingered in her mind more than she’d care to admit.
as everything would’ve aligned eventually. they had history together long before anyone else met him, long before u.a even happened and yes they argued, yes they fought multiple times but everyone knew there was something between them.
sparks just like his quirk.
they could’ve happened, they would’ve happened.
standing where you are now was her spot. next to katsuki, standing so close— as if you knew why he was the way he is, what he likes, what he hates. have you even met his mom? you probably would’ve crumbled on the spot.
“hey sakura! you coming?” mina called over by the classroom door.
but she stood unmoving, gaze still trained below at the newly found couple outside the window. one no one expected to ever happen and yet it did.
sakura sighed in contempt. “don’t you think katsuki’s been spending too much time with her? it’s like he forgot about his….friends.”
the alien girl only gave a worried glance but understood the deeper meaning behind what she really meant. mina honestly wished things would’ve been different and that everything could’ve worked out ending in a happily ever after in a wedding where everybody can lightheartedly say I told you so at the pair but alas it had not.
sakura was one of her best friends and being the only two girls in the group had only brought them closer. but bakugou was one her pals too and if you made him happy who was she to take him away from you? not that she could anyway.
and while it didn’t seem like it was completely over, after all you two were only in the first official stage of the relationship. there was a chance you two could still break up and maybe that’s what sakura was subconsciously hoping for.
however both she and mina knew that nobody could come between, not when he looked at you like you hung every star in the sky.
“sakura…” mina softly called her name, stepping closer at the now hunched over girl.
“it’s not fair, it’s not fair— it’s not fair.” she cried as tears began to fall endlessly from her face.
“it’s okay— it’s okay, none of this is your fault. I promise you’ll feel better with time.” mina tries to comfort her heartbroken friend, patting sakura’s back as she hiccups in her lap on the floor.
“he was supposed to be mine.”
“I don’t think we have to go.” your fiancé would suggest as he trudged towards the front door while slightly dragging his heel across the wooden floor.
you bet people would do not a double but a quadruple take at the scene, seeing the normally fierce hero act so childish when he has to be with anyone else but you.
“they’re your friends kats, I’m sure they’ll be excited to see you again.”
he tried to reason, brushing back his spiky blonde hair. “but I saw them already.”
“yeah months ago.” you countered, freshening up infront of the mirror one last time.
“but the extras that hang around them are damn annoying, loud and nosy sons of bitches.”
“sounds a lot like someone I know.” you singsong, as he turns to face you fully.
“yeah yeah tell that to deku.”
“—and let’s go! grab the keys kat.”
with that the both of you set off to the meeting place at a nice restaurant by a beach giving quite a nice view.
stepping inside the cold building, he instantly wrapped an arm around your shoulder. providing you some warmth as you neared the section of round marble tables. hearing clatters of utensils and conversations around till a bright voice called for your attention.
“well if it isn’t the newly engaged couple! welcome—welcome!” kaminari greeted excitedly, kindly signaling for the pair to sit on the available seats.
“hello kaminari, sero, jiro— where’s mina?” you asked shuffling to a comfortable position.
“oh she’s coming soon, here meet kokona and akemi, they’re from our year in the support class.” he introduced, pointing at the blonde and black haired girls next to sero.
you nodded quickly giving a hello to which they strangely ignored, embarrassed you awkwardly lowered your waving hand.
“right. so katsuki—“ kokona started but quickly gets cut off.
“don’t fucking call me that. it’s bakugou to you extras.” he spat with some venom in his tone.
kokomi shifted uncomfortably before laughing it off.
“well bakugou I was just saying what a surprise it is to see you two still together ahahahaahaa.”
in a flash the table simmered down to an uneasy silence, everyone in a mix of pained and uncomfortable expressions.
“what the fuck do you even mean?” he asked in a eerily calm manner.
“well everybody knows you and sakura are inevitable, it’s just insane to see you still with her— I mean everyone shipped the two of you!!” she spoke so fast that no one could utter a word.
then akemi added as if you weren’t even there. “it’s true! our class even had a poll and everything on who would be end up being a couple in the end but of course trial and error.”
“ahaha— kokomi, akemi stop spouting nonsense.” kaminari recommended, really for their sake.
“what? I know most if not all of class a and some from even class b shipped it at some point too—“
“yeah at some point but that’s clearly very over and you should apologize for insinuating anything of whatever you said just now.” jiro added, face looking extremely baffled.
“it’s for her sake too!! c’mon do you really believe they won’t—“
“it’s taking me every ounce of patience not to blow shit up right now.” bakugou spoke again, this time with even more anger seeping from his words.
he stood up lifting you along as well.
“so we’re just gonna leave before I bash both of your heads against the wall, fucking knew you extras are weird and dumb as shit.” he hissed, turning around for the exit.
you turned to look at the person who called him at the same time, sakura.
“surprise!” mina cheered coming out from behind the frozen girl.
his eyes wavered, an expression you don’t see in him often. was he scared? nervous? was he feeling butterflies just from the sight of her? you didn’t know and suddenly your heart fell to your stomach— as finally, the moment everyone has waited for, the reunion of the two and you can’t even tell in the slightest what his mind was thinking.
“we were just leaving.” he said, less angry you noticed.
“what?! but this is the first time in months since we all really got together c’monnn I don’t think you even had a drink yet!” the pink hero smiled dragging him whose attached to you back to your original spots.
“because these idiots over here—“ he tried standing back up.
“one drink!” she pleaded, pushing him back down.
his eyes glanced for yours to see what you wanted to do and you nodded, you weren’t about to ruin this night for him.
the best you could muster that is, because you can endure it, brush it off like always. the only thing you wished was for mina to be a little more subtle in her intentions as she goes to sit on the opposite end therefore making sakura sit next to katsuki.
if you were being honest out of all of the people in bakugou’s group, mina by far was the least you were close to. you pinned the reason on her loyalty for sakura but even then a little more respect to your relationship would be nice.
then ever so naturally she starts a conversation to a better atmosphere, chatter ensuing almost as if moments ago was just a mere dream and that kinda felt like a punch in the gut. as if you already didn’t know about everyone’s apparent preference when it comes to katsuki’s supposed endgame since high school.
honestly seeing her yourself, it reminded you of how much inferior you are. you always thought sakura was pretty, she was also really strong and everybody got along well with her. of course except you but you’ve always admired her anyway.
she fits him well aesthetically and before when they were close they worked really good together. it’s starting again—
you’re nowhere near her greatness.
she matches katsuki better.
oh you’re his girlfriend?
“I have to go use the bathroom.” you whispered, softly resting your palm on the blonde’s shoulder.
bakugou grabbed your hand in return and turned to face you.
“you need me to come with you?”
you laughed slightly, not noticing the gaze of somebody else staring at you two living in your own world.
with that you left for the bathroom and for awhile you stared at the mirror, water falling from the faucet in an endless stream as the mirror began to fog up.
thinking that your relationship with bakugou was right and it probably wasn’t.
his friends seem to think so, at least before.
though you can’t help but wonder if they still do root for the two secretly, heck even his mom can’t hide her favoritism when anytime you two would come to visit she always managed to chide bakugou about when sakura would visit again.
whether it was intentional or not, it still hurt even if she didn’t at all mean anything by it. if she resented you or just genuinely wondered what transpired between the two. even some super fans that were so insanely crazed about the past duo, having seen their leaked childhood pictures, hoping for some friends to lovers to happen.
everyone wanted them to happen.
you’ve heard whispers from his fans to his friends to his mother.
it’s not fair, it’s not fair— it’s not fair.
you were his there was no doubt in your mind but is he yours?
you were being silly to think your relationship with him would be forever because it never will be. not when you came in the picture before they could even let their love blossom fully.
as you exited the bathroom you went and sat back on your seat perfectly on time as a waiter stops by to get everybody’s orders and everything would’ve been fine, not for what he asked next but who he directed it to.
“and what can I get for this lovely pair? y’know there’s a discount for couples this february!” he joyously shared, looking straight at katsuki and her.
"we aren’t dating, why does everyone keep assuming that?!” bakugou yelled in genuine frustration.
the waiter’s face then flushed red, nervously sweating at his mistake and praying to every god he knew to please not let him get blown up by the glaring hero.
"oh, my apologies!! I really am sorry. I was just— it seems like I was wrong." he stammered, eyes edging to cascade a waterfall of tears.
“it’s okay, katsuki it was just a mistake.” sakura softly spoke, defending the man.
“whatever.” he rolled his eyes.
“oh wow you still got it sakura! the bakugou whisperer!” kaminari joked, still as always unable to read the room.
sero kicked the blonde from under the table. “dude shut up.”
you’d like to pretend you don’t know what he’s apologizing for, though unfortunately you do.
“it’s fine.” you dismissively waved off.
for the entire evening you’re mind festered with all sorts of questions and doubts that have been slowly piling up over the years.
it didn’t help that he seemed relaxed conversing with her, though a little bit awkward. maybe he’s just nervous…..nervous in a way that made your own stomach twist.
perhaps if he didn’t look so unsure of himself you could’ve ignored the whole ordeal like you have for the past years. but when he saw her his anger quickly faded and it was like you also faded in the background as everybody else continued to converse normally. it felt like you were a wrong number in the equation fucking everything up.
he would never cheat on you, you knew that much.
because despite seeming like he doesn’t care— he does, a lot. so of course he wouldn’t just up and break up with you for her now that she showed up once.
maybe you just had to do it for him.
the ride back home was quiet, almost serene if not for what you’ve been feeling. with everything starting to blur, you randomly blurt out without even meaning to.
“no.” he immediately answered, eyes straying to the mirror at front trying to meet your gaze but you only stayed silent.
“it’s not like that. I don’t even think about her so don’t ask me cause there’s no point, okay?” he answered firmly, as if he was trying to erase everything about her today.
the rest of the ride was silent, usually a comfortable one but this time it felt different. not bad just something else in the air entirely, like something unspoken and tetheringly piercing lingering. however nothing brought a sharper pain in your heart than seeing the house you two bought together.
it wasn’t your place to be there.
“babe?” he called as you snapped away from your thoughts.
you didn’t realize he had opened the door, holding his hand out for you to reach.
for a moment or two you stared before giving him one of the paper bags from underneath the compartment and standing up on your own.
“we better get these in the fridge hm?” you said as naturally as you could before brushing past him and into the house.
placing the leftovers as quickly as you could that as soon as he entered the house you were already walking upstairs.
“I’m gonna head to bed now.”
“wait—“ he grabbed your arm gently, stopping you from whatever frenzy you were experiencing.
he asked with twisted brows. “are you okay?”
“why wouldn’t I be?“ you grinned, tilting your head to the side.
he nodded slowly, though he noticed your smile didn’t quite reach your eyes. he grew worried and even more so when he leaned in for a kiss, you swerved making his lips press your cheek instead.
“okay— what is it, tell me.”
bakugou looked at you so intently. like whatever you had to say mattered more than everything in the world. like he cared, like he loved you.
“I think we should break up.” you voiced, avoiding his gaze as your eyes welled up.
again, his answer was immediate.
“I’m serious katsuki.” you weakly state, rubbing the right side of your shoulder.
he thought you were joking but taking one good at your form, your expression. it was sincere in a way that you were trying and succeeding in believing it yourself.
“where is this coming from?”
“everyone.” you mumbled only for you to hear.
you spoke cautiously, as if you were speaking a foreign language that sounded strange on your tounge. “because I don’t like you anymore.”
he rolled his eyes assuming this was one of your pranks. “right because you love me.”
“no— I’m done with this relationship katsuki.”
at that his body rose to an upset stature, not at you, more specifically at what he’s hearing.
“is this about earlier? I told you—“
“then give me a valid reason why, you can’t just up and say shit like this.”
“because I don’t see us being together any more.”
you blinked rapidly trying to stop whatever tears from falling. it was for the best. this is for the best. don’t look. don’t look. don’t make this any harder than it has to be.
“I don’t believe you.” he spoke with deep resolution but you could see his lips tremble, bag slightly crunching from his grip as if to ground himself back to reality when it already was.
“I’VE JUST LOST FEELINGS OKAY?!!” you yelled stumbling on your feet.
your confidence shaken by his refusal, you thought by doing it yourself you’re giving him the chance to be free without any guilt but seeing the look on his face is making you feel guilty instead.
leftovers long forgotten as carelessly placed it aside, he yelled back with brows fully twisted in both anger and confusion.
“NO— TELL ME WHY YOU’RE ACTUALLY DOING THIS!?!!!”
“I DON'T WANT TO BE THE REASON!!”
“—I don’t want to be the reason you two can’t end up together.” you revealed in a tired whisper.
he calls your name but you quickly add on before he could make you think otherwise.
“I feel like I’m in the way of this grandeur love story where inevitably you’re gonna realize I’m not the one you want and that breaks my heart katsuki.” you cried, voice cracking along the way.
“and it does…it really does but not as much as holding you back from the one you truly love—“
“but you aren’t— I don’t want her!! maybe back then I did but I need you now.” he uttered in a desperate tone.
one that sounded so genuine you had to turn away because for every time someone had made you doubt, made you develop this inkling that never faded. it crushes you to have put the one you love in this kind of position.
“look— you can’t tell me what and how I should feel and on who I do get to love. it’s completely my fault for ever letting you even consider that I don’t and completely and utterly with you.” he reassured, masking strength in his words as he stepped closer hugging you from behind as you tried holding back sobs, hiccuping in the process.
“—because for every second I go out in the face of danger, all I think about is getting home safe just so I could see your face, hear your voice, and feel your warmth.”
“so please don’t end us now when all I’ve ever considered as my future was you.”
the air stilled and echoing silence, breaths held that were desperate for air. you could only nod, holding the arms that were around your body. arms that hugged you so close as if to make sure you wouldn’t leave.
“okay.” he whispered as well to reassure you and himself that everything was fine.
it’s not an instantaneous fix but it would be alright. you’ll both get through this and he’d damn make sure of it.
bakugou finally texted her— or well mina who informed her that he wanted to come over. after years of radio silence this was finally it. pacing around her apartment waiting for him to arrive, this was something long overdue.
of course he was gonna come back, he just needed some time to live whatever fantasy he had with her and finally here he was.
“katsuki.” she uttered in disbelief, as he stood in front of her.
though barely inside the house and just in the hallway of the entrance door with bakugou setting an arm or two length of distance between them.
“don’t— don’t call me that anymore.”
she stumbled, that wasn’t what she was expecting to hear. “what do you mean?“
he sighed as if it was so simple.
“I came here to tell you to stay out of my life. I really did try to be amicable because we shared the same group of friends and I didn’t want things to turn awkward but I just can’t do it.”
“I also told mina to stop with her shit already but I understand where she’s coming from and you need some closure to really sever this whole thing so—“
this isn’t what was supposed to happen.
“ka— bakugou uh— look I understand we didn’t handle things well back then but to cut me off like this seems a bit extreme don’t you think? I mean were friends aren’t we?“ she desperately reasoned, trying to look at him in the eyes but he just avoided it.
“we’re barely anything sakura. we never were, we never will.” he stated.
but her anger only grew, for a long time she simmered in her head that he’ll be back within her grasps. he was rightfully hers, everyone said so and she believes it, so why?
“WHY?!!! I’VE WAITED YEARS FOR YOU—“
“I NEVER ASKED YOU TO! WHATEVER WE HAD WAS SOMETHING TRIVIAL— A CRUSH BUT WITH HER IT’S REAL!!”
“—she’s everything I want, everything I need and I don’t care what anyone else thinks or feels.” he noted, turning to the door.
“so you can hang round’ the group wherever whenever but don’t expect me to come as well cause I won’t.”
“you’re letting her dictate your life—“ a hail mary reason as her hand reaches for his figure that slowly moved farther and farther away.
“because she is! she is my life because I don’t think I could live without her.” he glanced back, as if affirming her his decision.
“so that’s it? you’re choosing her?” she asked in defeat as the world continued to collapse around her.
“yeah, I am.” he answered one last time before shutting the door close.
“I have a feeling you got everything you wanted and you’re not wasting time stuck here like me, you’re just thinking it’s a small thing that happened the world ended when it happened to me.”
