2016.03.15 AD - Janken for it.
Good morning. This is Arashi’s Ohno Satoshi. Here’s today’s thought of the day; come on! “If you look around the table and don’t see a sucker, who could the sucker be? The answer is obvious.”[1] [BGM ‘Fukkatsu LOVE’] What the heck? (laughs) This is apparently a poker proverb. This was sent in by listener Bagel-san of Tokyo. The message reads: “In a world of winning and losing, it’s better to look for the loser than to try be a winner. If you can’t find them, it means that you’re the loser. This is random, but I’m ridiculously weak in battles, especially in janken (rock, paper, scissors). In the past, I played janken with 35 people and I was the ultimate loser. Just recently I played janken with 10 people and lost. Satoshi-kun, you became leader of Arashi by winning in janken, didn’t you? Is Satoshi-kun good at janken? Could you give a janken weakling like me some tips on surefire ways to win?” Ohh… Amazing, does janken happen with 35 people? And recently they did janken with 10 people… That’s pretty rare! My surefire-win method… Well, when playing amongst a large group - and this is just between you and me here - I usually put out 'paper’ first. Surprisingly that wins quite a lot. That’s what I heard. When playing in a large group, people tend to be scared of putting out 'paper’ because it’s so open. Apparently there’s a tendency to put out something where you scrunch up your hand like 'rock’ or 'scissors’. So the chances of people putting out 'rock’ is high and you can win. But when it comes down to a one-on-one match, you can’t tell. Mm. Janken is tricky, I think. It’s hard. Which is why I won and became leader. At the end it was down to me and Sho-kun. And I won. And just as I was about to rejoice, he was like, “You’re the leader!” And I was like, “Eh?” It was when Arashi got to appear on Shōnentai’s show around the time of our debut. We didn’t have a leader at the time and they told us to decide on one. “Janken for it,” they said. So me and Sho-kun were the last two. I won and thought I’d successfully escaped being the leader, but he was like, “You’re the leader!” “…Eh?” That’s how it began. Seems that Shōnentai tend to do that - like if you don’t have a leader, they make you decide through janken. It was the same for TOKIO, apparently. So leaders are decided through janken. (laughs) Well, I was grateful. I’d never had 'Leader’ as a nickname before. If I had to say, I am grateful. Well, good luck with janken - start with 'paper’! Bagel-san, try starting with 'paper’! That’s all; this was Ohno Satoshi! —– [1] Alternatively: “If you sit in on a poker game and don’t see a sucker, get up. You’re the sucker.” – attributed to various sources in 1979, according to the Quote Investigator website.

Playzone 2001 Shinseki Emotion, 2001.08.16
This was Ohno’s final day/performance for Shinseki Emotion. And this is also the final year that Ohno participates in Playzone. Also the last time he’s on stage with MA in a musical/stage play.
Very very emotional final day.
And before I attempt to narrate/translate what went on during that final speech, just recall for a moment that this is 2001 and Ohno still felt insecure about being Arashi, that he lagged behind Arashi, and the most vocal fans questioned why he debuted and not Tackey.
This was his first stageplay as lead with Shonentai, while carrying the title and name of being Arashi’s leader. He also said he had worried a lot for this musical, because he couldn’t give his all during practice and thought Shonentai despised him because of it even if they said nothing. Inohara’s (V6) encouraging words gave him strength. I’ve always said he’s a Shonentai baby. This is among the reasons why.
Now you can look at that crying face again. And this is what happened:
He actually said “Goodbye! Ohno Satoshi!” in this just before the final song/performance for Show Time. Jokingly, of course, and the crowd laughs. Then a huge cake was presented of Playzone saying goodbye to the 20th century, and welcoming the new century. The cake was delivered by MA (with 2 from MAD, I think). MA’s been reduced to 4 people at this point: Machida, Yara, Yonehana, Akiyama.
Curtain went down, and the next time it went up, Shonentai and Ohno stepped forward. And it didn’t take long before Ohno started bawling. I’d love to translate Ohno’s entire speech but I could only pick up very little (and he barely talked, what with all that bawling…)
Other than repeatedly saying his gratitude, he also said, “I did my best.” And, “It was good to be in Playzone.” And, “I’m really grateful to Shonentai and MA.”
The entire time, people were clapping and cheering him on, shouting “Ganbatte!” and “Kawaii!” at the same time. All the while, Ohno kept on bawling on his arm while Shonentai (Nikki, I think) yelled at him “Ohno! Don’t pretend to cry (or something along this line)!“
At this point, Ohno can barely speak and just said something like, "I can’t stop my tears anymore. Thank you everyone. Thank you very much” in a jumble of words.
Shonentai took over because Ohno’s incoherent. Not sure if it was Higashiyama talking, “I think that was one big step.” Cue laughter.
And then Nikki said, “Arashi fans can buy at least two Shonentai singles/CDs. I’ll check at the office! In this industry, it’s called give and take.” Cue laughter again.
Shonentai then asked the entire crowd to give Ohno a banzai cheer. The whole auditorium gave him the traditional Banzai cheer (3 times).
Trivia: Banzai isn’t actually a war cry. It’s more like a cheer for victory, favor and enthusiasm.
I think this moment was when Ohno won the hearts of an entire auditorium/theater. You know that phrase, “Bring the house down” ? I also like to view this moment as the stage in Ohno’s life where he finally began to build that momentum (and confidence) to take on the industry as an Arashi member with pride. It sure felt like watching his whole past support his future endeavors.
Sorry for the long text. The read more option wasn’t available.

19.01.27 ARASHI Suspension of Group Activities Press Conference Full (I)
※ Ohno-san Q&A O: Thank you very much for coming to this press conference in your busy time in spite of sudden invitation. We have sent comments to our fans a while ago. May I announce once again, we, ARASHI, decided to suspend our group activities after 31 December 2020. While it is very self-centered, we would like to take this opportunity to convey this to you from our own words. Thank you for your support today. Q: Once again, please tell us the particulars that led to this conclusion? O: In around mid June 2017, I gathered the other four members to talk about my thoughts and my feelings, that I would like to stop my activities as ARASHI for once. I told the other four members that I would like to try living a free life for once, after that, we had discussions again and again, and came to a decision that ARASHI group activities would be suspended after 2020. Q: Please tell us the details of how the discussions were conducted and how the agreed decision was resulted. O: In mid June 2017, I gathered the four members for the first time to reveal my feelings, after that, I met each member one by one, properly listened to their thoughts one by one, after that, we five gathered again, we had a lot of discussions again and again, at last staff of Johnny’s participated in our discussions, in February 2018 we reported to Johnny’s, and then we had more discussions, and then we came to this decision in June 2018. Q: I would like to ask Ohno-san, in the message announced to fans, you said “I want to try living a free life for once without being tied by anything”, what does it mean in particular? O: Though I have not decided in detail what I would like to do during the suspension, speaking of free life, of course I would like to try leaving this (entertainment industry) world for once and seeing the sceneries that I have not seen before. I also think that I have not experienced a common life since I have entered this world, I am also interested in it, but I have no detailed plan what I would like to do. Q: Even if you live a free life, you are still a talent of Johnny’s, and a member of ARASHI, right? O: Right. At first, when I reported to others including my members that I wanted to end the activities, when it came to thinking to end the activities, I thought that indeed I had to quit this agency otherwise it would not be an end to me, however, while I had the discussion with members and the agency staff, there was discussion as it might be fine to take a break, so though I belonged to the agency, after the deadline of discussion, though I did not discover anything I would like to do, I think that I would like to take time to take a break and think about it. Q: When did Ohno’s thought come to a trigger to this decision? O: Frankly saying, there was no trigger. Rather than thinking about it all the time, about three years ago, such feeling and thought started growing, and it gradually became stronger, this is the present situation. Q: Was about around the time after the Hawaii concert? O: A while after the concert completed, I had other work, from that point, there were some changes in my feelings, yes. Q: The scenery of Hawaii was special, right? O: Right so. I returned to Japan from there, though I could not recall the details, since the completion of 15th anniversary, when I worked on my works, when I was allowed to work on individual works, though it was gradual, such feeling started to grow. Q: Has there been something like sense of accomplishment? O: Sense of accomplishment … frankly saying, during 10th anniversary and 15th anniversary, of course there was sense of accomplishment, but in myself I did not have a feeling that I have accomplished it, indeed at that time, I also did not have such feeling during Hawaii, really the feeling gradually started to grow. Q: Will Ohno-san take a rest of entertainment activities from 2021? O: Right so. Yes. Q: You will stop your work for a period of time? O: Right, I would like to stop for once to spend some time to reconsider myself for once. In terms of work, yes I shall take a break of my works. Q: What would you think how long would the break be? O: Though I have not thought about the details to that, while I shall run through to the end of 2020 as ARASHI, with the feeling that time, I think that my thoughts would come out when I take a break after that, so I have no idea now. Q: However, I think that there are a lot of fans waiting for revival in terms of this suspension of group activities, and I think members are also waiting for the revival, though a rough idea, would you let us know how long it would be, or whether you are already tired of the work … M: It’s difficult to answer (giggle). O: Really, roughly … S: But you haven’t decided at all, right? (giggle) O: I haven’t decided. A: Could you tell how long? (giggle) Roughly. We don’t know too, roughly how long. M: Right, I hope you’d tell us if you’ve decided (giggle). A: Would you tell us? (giggle) N: Right. O: I haven’t decided! (giggle) I’m sorry. N: Excuse me. Q: So you are not taking a break because you are tired, right? O: I do not feel in myself that I am tired. I have a strong wish that I would like to leave for once, stop for once, and reconsider myself, indeed. It is not that I am tired, no. I do think that he is burnt out. This has been an ongoing battle for him since 2010. His words, his actions...i think he wants to get married settle down and give the other members the same opportunity to find themselves individually. They are not getting any younger.
