"Can we use the hot tub after?" Buck jerks, sending utensils flying. Way to act like you weren't staring, idiot. "Oh, y-yeah, for sure. Of course. I can get it ready if you want to go change?" Chris catches the fork that was about to skitter off the counter and gives him a shrewd look. "Yeah, thanks. You coming too?" To the hot tub? To sit in what's essentially a large bathtub with his best friend, all sweat-damp and flushed from samba lessons with Hen? With his hair curling over his temples and a bright, satisfied smile on his face? At this point, that feels like a fate worse than death. Buck's heart kicks into triple-time just from thinking about it. Absolutely not.

“You know it’s not the same, right?”

Buck tilts his head to the side to look at Eddie, the TV turned low and soft in front of them. It’s late, now, after driving back from the hospital, slipping back into Eddie’s driveway like they were still living together. Chris had been in bed already, and Buck had followed Eddie to his room to watch him, the two of them shoulder-to-shoulder and still tender, before returning to the living room and sitting on the sofa side by side, silent.

“What do you mean?” Buck asks after a beat, even though he’s pretty sure he has some idea.

“What Hen was mad about-- what Chim did,” Eddie says, not quite looking at him. “It’s not the same as what Bobby did to you.”

And, well.

“I never said it was,” Buck replies, trying to keep his voice soft and even. Eddie’s tone is gentle, but only in the way that it gets when he’s trying not to feel too much. “I’m- I’m aware that it’s not about me, Eddie.”

The lights from the TV reflect soft glows on Eddie’s face, playing over the curve of his jaw, the wrinkles beginning to form at the edges of his eyes. “I’m not saying that you’re making it about you, Buck,” Eddie says, with a kind of implied apology that Buck accepts easily. “I’m just saying that-- I can see why it might hit home for you, but the situation is different, and Hen-”

“- just wanted to keep her family,” Buck finishes before Eddie can. “I mean, even if everything else is different-- I can understand that, Eddie.” A sharp laugh. “I don’t understand why you’re so hung up about the whole chain of command thing, though.”

A sigh. “I’m just saying that responsibilities are given to people for a reason-”

“Oh, like you’ve never gone against orders.”

“It’s not about me, either-”

“But you don’t care about orders, not really,” Buck swishes his beer around in his mouth. “You just like the idea that you do.”

Eddie splutters. “That’s not true.”

“It totally is!” Buck tilts his head at Eddie. Grins. “You know, if you wanted to call someone sir, you don't need to go through this much mental gymnastics to do it.”

That makes Eddie cough around a sip of beer, and Buck absolutely does not watch the way his throat works as he works the bottleneck back down from his lips. “Jesus, Buck.”

Buck shrugs. “‘M just saying, Eddie. Authority doesn't mean shit. I followed Bobby because I trusted him. I follow Chim because he’s my friend. If he broke that trust with Hen…well. I’m not saying that she should’ve hid it, but I get why she did what she did.”

“And I can understand why Chim had to do it,” Eddie responds. A moment, then a sigh. “Well, at least it’s not us that’s fighting this time, even if we don't agree.”

Buck snorts despite himself, even though the situation itself isn’t funny, not really. “It’s weird,” he commiserates. “I don't think I’ve ever seen them fight. Not seriously.” Not like us, he doesn’t say.

“Well, it’s different with them, isn't it?” Eddie says, as if he’d heard him anyways.

Buck furrows his brows. “How? I mean, they’re partners, we’re--”

“They were partners,” Eddie corrects. “Now they’re not. Ex-work husband, remember?”

Buck rolls his eyes. “I mean, so are we.”

“No we’re not.”

Buck blinks, turns to stare at Eddie. Eddie is still looking at the TV, but there’s something stiff in the way he holds himself, like a prey animal that realizes that it’s been seen. Like he hadn’t meant to say it out loud.

“Eddie…” Buck says slowly. “Wh- What do you mean? I- we’re not-” work husbands anymore. The words get caught in his throat on their way up, twisting uncomfortably.

“Just because we don’t work together anymore doesn't mean we’re not-” Eddie doesn't say it either. The words sit in the space between them.

Buck wonders, something shivering up his spine, if he was about to say partners or work husbands. Wonders which he wants to hear more.

“Eddie,” he starts. Stops. “I-”

“I’m still- I still want you to have my back,” Eddie says, after a moment too long. His mouth twists, almost hesitantly. “I mean, if you still- if I can still have yours.”

Buck thinks about grocery stores and gunshots, about Chimney and Athena’s hands on his shoulder as he had jerked towards where Eddie was, tethered still. He thinks about a woman’s voice bringing someone back to the surface, about screaming someone’s name while they feel a thousand lightyears away. He had wondered, for a while there, if his voice could still reach Eddie. If Eddie would still let it.

If Eddie is handing him his end of the tether, telling him to keep it taut, then Buck- well. Buck will take any reason not to let go.

“Yeah,” Buck says, letting his hand fall on the couch between them, pinkie-to-pinkie, arm-to-arm. He doesn't let himself think before he speaks, lets the truth linger in the darkness between them. “Yeah, you’ve still got mine, if I can still have you.”

Eddie’s eyes fall shut for a moment. His hand nudges Buck’s back. Their pinkies fall on top of each other. Just a little, just enough.

“Yeah,” Eddie repeats, like a hand taken, like relief. “Yeah, you can still have me.”

Shane's hands move to his own belt, but then he stops. Ilya's eyes snap up to his face and his chest twists as he sees hesitation.

“Shane?” He asks, taking a step forward. Concerned, he asks, “Are you okay? We don't have to-”

“No, no,” with a flustered laugh, Shane shakes his head. “It's stupid.”

Ilya reaches out to him, hands landing on his waist, “Tell me.”

Shane bites his lips, and Ilya can only imagine what goes through his mind right now. “I, uh… had a present for you?” Ilya's English may not be perfect, but he is pretty sure that's not supposed to be a question.

(Or: Shane has a surprise for Ilya on their wedding night.)

Eddie doesn't turn around when Buck bursts through the front door. He hardly makes any indication at all that he noticed Buck is home. He just hums a weak acknowledgement of Buck's existence that barely carries over from the kitchen and continues reading the newspaper. The physical actual newspaper that he gets delivered to the house. Buck wants to roll his eyes, but it's no fun if Eddie doesn't see.

"I'm back." Buck says, bouncing on the balls of his feet. The leftover adrenaline from his run pumping his blood fast and hard. Eddie sits frustratingly still at the kitchen table. His feet are kicked up on the chair across from him. Buck has the urge to kick it out from under him. Send him reeling a little bit, put that angry indignant look he saves just for Buck on his face.

When your relationship is brand new, it’s easy to disappear into your own little world. She and Eddie had done the same thing.

They’re so close like this that for a second he actually thinks Buck might be about to kiss him. Buck doesn’t say anything, just licks his lips, eyes trained on his mouth like he can’t meet his eye. Eddie waits a beat, then baits him, “Chain of command.”

And see, Buck almost believes him. That all of it had been some sign of the universe, meant for Buck to save Eddie from harm or death. But there’s this pull in Eddie’s face that betrays him.

“Don’t lie to me, you dick,” Buck says harshly, pointing at him, “What the fuck?”

“Oh, fuck,” Eddie groans, looking up at the sky. “Not again. I told you not to follow me!”

“What the fuck is that supposed to mean?” Buck asks, walking to where Eddie is, still in the water. He’s looming over him now, hands finding his hips.

“You wouldn’t believe me,” Eddie tells him, shaking his head.

Buck laughs, a strange laugh that doesn’t sound at all like him, because he has this feeling that something happened. Something is wrong. “Try me.”

I've had a couple of very stressful weeks at work, which means that I spent all the time that I was not working or, you know, being a functional member of society, reading ALL THE HR FIC. I'm posting these recs now because I'm sick of copy&pasting stuff, but I've got easily as many more to post. Days need more hours, basically.

Triple Gold | 7.6K | Shane is hiding an impulsive new piercing. Ilya finds out. | This is not only hot as sin, but the author just gets the dynamic between Shane and Ilya so well. The rest of the series is excellent too.

Too ripe not to split | 2.6K | Ilya rocks his hips up. “No, Hollander. Keep up. I want to meet your dildo.” He enjoys enunciating the word. Tries to give it a bit of a whiny Canadian inflection. “You remember? You told me about him, back in Vegas.”| Hot, hot, hot. Supernova hot. Perfect character voices too.

winters here | 2.6K | sex after smoking weed. we love to see i| So sweet.

The Way Hockey Is | 5.6K | Cliff Marlow's POV of The Hit and the aftermath, as he starts to put a few things together. | I have a soft spot for Marleau (Marlow? I can never remember, one is book!spelling, the other is show!spelling, I prefer the French one). The actor who plays him on the show makes it so easy to like him. Excellent outsider's POV, great voices all around.

from the cold | 6.3K | The Hollanders have a new son to take care of. Ilya has no idea what’s going on. | I have a thing for stories in which Yuna and David adopt Ilya. This is probably my favourite, it's excellent hut!comfort (emphasis on comfort, Ilya just has the flu) and the characterisation is top-notch and the Hollanders are caring but not OTT.

two hours year-round | 3.3K | At this point Shane’s dick was nearly soft again. Ilya appeared to accept this with ill-grace, withdrawing his hand with an exaggerated sigh. “It is—for mood. Can lower sex drive, the doctor said.” He shrugged. “It's not a big deal. I fuck you some other way.” | how can a story about erectile dysfunction and depressing be so good and joy? I love stories that explore Ilya's depression, but ones that do it well while keeping everyone IC are hard to find. If you know of more please let me know!

Do It Scared | | Shane Hollander's five rules of how to not look gay (and how he breaks them for Ilya Rozanov) + one time he doesn't have to.| Great Shane study, and I love the dual timeline.

Never Brought to Mind | 2K | Shane and Ilya's situationship vs. getting a kiss on New Year's Eve | Amissing scene from early ep 4, IIRC and my favourite festive Hollanov fic. I mean, there's quite a few Christmas fic for this pairing, some of it very cute, but this NYE stroy is the best and I can't shake the thought that as a Russian Ilya would totally prefer to try and spend Novy God with Shane, rather than Christmas. Anyway, both their voices are spot on, and it's so sweet without being saccharine.

Dick Math | 1K | On one particularly obsessive evening, he’d spoken into his phone, eyes burning from looking at the picture for far too long: “Hey Siri, what is the average Slavic penis length?” “I’m sorry,” she said, “I don’t understand your question.” | This is technically crack and it made me laugh so much. Shane is so...Shane, in this. Hee.

if at first you don't suck seed | 4K | Shane Hollander won't be outdone. One way or another, he's going to learn to deepthroat. | Shane is being his obsessive, competetive self. Ilya is sarcastic as usual and a good enabler. This is fun and hot in equal parts.

As Long as You're Here | 5.5K | * Missing scene from ep 5, after Shane goes to Ilya's room in Tampa Bay after the Allstar Game* | I went looking for missing scenes fro this precise bit of the ep for a friend, and found out one of my favourite fic writers ever had written Hollanov! It was like Christmas. Predictably, it was exquisite.

ain't nothin' but mammals | 7K | Urgent missive from Napoleon to his wife Josephine: Home in three days. Don’t wash. | I love when these two get a bit freaky. Fantastic banter too. Very hot.

whispers carried on second wind | 5.3K| In which Ilya perceives Shane a little more than he’s allowed to, so Shane uses the tried and true Ilya Rozanov™ method of deflecting with sex | Tender, hot, filthy. Excellent character work wrapped in smut, basically.

wait | 2.7 K | Jane: No problem again, sorry. I’ll see you in a few months. | Set during the situationship, around ep 4, pre-tuna melt. Ilya and Shane are supposed to hook up, but Shane is sick. This just perfectly encapsulates their dynamic at this point in canon. Beautifully wistful.

Ilya Rozanov Buys a Sensible Car | 13 K | Ilya’s not really one for birthday celebrations, but he can’t pass up the opportunity to fuck Shane in his car. | Set post show, pre- TLG. This is sweet but has so many lines/moments when it hits you with an emotional truth. Also, perfect Ilya voice.

A Dozen Forget-Me-Nots | 6K | Hayden doesn't have hanahaki and if he does, it's purely platonic and if it's not, nobody ever has to know. Especially not Shane| This is SHane/Ilya but also Shane/Pike and Pike/Jackie. But you should read it! Like, I didnìt even know this fnadom trope, hanahaki diseases, before reading a couple in HR fandom, and it's not something that would appeal to me, but I love a good Hayden POV and also pining/unrequited love, and Pike can be such a moron, but he's a loyal moron. This was lovely.

Sun in an empty room | 27K | “My knee’s fucked,” Shane continued, a little more flatly; under control. It’s what he’d suspected deep down, after all. “And so I can’t play hockey. I’m done.” | This is such a massive, MASSIVE ANGST-FEST. Be warned. Aslo, technically it's a WIP but it felt satisfying enough as it is. It's such a a fantastic character study for Shane, how much hockey is part of his identity and what retiring not on his own terms would mean. And of course, what this all means for Ilya. I sniffled in places. But I'm glad I read this.

paper lanterns, one after another | 4K paper lanterns, one after another | It occurs to Ilya that he doesn't belong here. But then, this is a necessary migration.| When I saw that @raven had written in this fandom I actually squealed. This fic has all the hallmarks of her fiction: lyrical, gorgeous prose, fantastic character work, a focus on what being displaced/ between two cultures means, a feeling of melancholy...amazing stuff.

Home Ice Advantage | 51K | Shane gets traded to Boston AU | One of the best AUs of the canon divergence kind out there, because it is plotty but not drawn out. I've already read it a few times and I fervently hope the author will continue the series.

“Y-Yeah, totally,” Shane replied. “D-Do you uh– do you know who that kid with Rozanov is?”

Scott laughed a little, tilting his head in confusion.

“Probably Rozanov’s kid,” he informed Shane, causing his brain to stall completely.

“You didn’t hear?” Scott asked, and Shane blinked, trying to reboot his mind from the crash that Scott had just caused. “It’s why he took time off,” Hunter informed him. “Found out he had a kid, I guess. Or something like that, I didn’t really get the details.”

Of all the reasons he’d thought of for Ilya disappearing for the past month, this had never crossed his mind. A million different thoughts raced through Shane’s mind. How the hell was Ilya a dad, and why hadn’t he told Shane and how the fuck did Scott Hunter of all people find out before him and—

And what the fuck was Shane supposed to do now?

2. ✸Across the spectrum - 34k - Hayden's young son is diagnosed as autistic, and he begins to realize that he's seen a lot of these symptoms before...in his best friend. Now Shane's having to come to terms with being one of those people who slipped through the cracks as a child and is diagnosed as an adult. How can Ilya and the rest of their friends support him through this?

3. ✸✦When silence starts speaking - 40k - Plagued with the issues of his family past and present, Ilya Rozanov finds himself in the media's eyes for all the wrong reasons recently with no end in sight. When the team decides enough is enough with the drinking and whoring, Ilya is suddenly faced with a new issue to tackle—team omega Shane Hollander. Shane is up for the task of getting the Russian alpha under control for the season, but are they both up for the unexpected heated connection between them that follows?

4. ✸a case of you - 43k - Ilya and Shane soulbond with a handshake in a freezing parking lot in Saskatchewan. It actually doesn’t change very much, until Shane’s concussion drives everything haywire, forcing them into close proximity and an earlier confrontation with all the feelings they’ve been trying to ignore.

Or: as it turns out, it’s easier than you’d think to be in someone’s head and still not know how they feel.

5. ⨳ line change - 21k -

"You're an awesome player to watch."

"I watch you too…I like watching you."

One line changes everything. --- OR: Instead of turning him down, Ilya and Shane become fast friends at the Prospects Cup. Their relationship (and how they hide the truth) completely changes when the media poses them as best friends instead of rivals.

6.✸ love you like a loophole - 23k -

“Pretend we don't know each other?” Shane repeats, a little confused in all honesty. Wasn't therapy about talking?

“Yes. You are meeting for the first time in this room. Introduce yourselves.”

Shane shifts in his seat, slowly turning to Ilya. It's not all that different from the first time they'd actually met; the awkward vibes radiating off Shane are almost identical. They're just missing a snowy forecast and a cigarette.

He decides to go a step further, standing up. It feels the right thing to do under the circumstances. Who meets for the first time sitting down? He takes a step forward, holding his hand out to Ilya. Or not Ilya. This random man he’s about to meet, who happens to look a lot like Ilya. Ilya takes the cue, standing from his own chair with a shake of his head. He takes Shane’s hand, shaking firmly.

“I’m Shane, uh, Shane Hollander.”

Ilya nods. “Ilya Rozanov.”

Shane doesn’t lie often. His soulmate does though.

Shane Hollander meets Ilya Rozanov when he is four years old and he cannot be any more unimpressed by this turn of events.

Thirteen years later, like the most cliché heartbreak in the making, they are best friends and Shane is thoroughly, utterly in love with him.

Ilya Rozanov's life has been a study in leaving things behind and one way or another he learned to deal with it.

One exception is Shane Hollander who came along thirteen years ago, settled in all too cozy, and ensured himself as the one thing Ilya can't ever leave.

Shane is the only omega on his hockey team and one of the few to play for the NHL.

He will do anything to remain at the top and protect his reputation from harmful rumors.

But when he finds out that he is pregnant, Shane’s world crumbles around him, and the only person he can trust with his secret is the alpha, who shares his heat but does not want to be his mate.

The last time Shane had a fever would have been years ago. It still didn’t feel like this, where he was soaking through the sheets, and the world seemed to be going black around the edges. You can help him with the language, and, believe me, he can teach you a lot from hockey. He’s European; they do things differently there. Yes?”

Cause that would be bad probably, for your head I mean, and I just think—” Shane stopped listening again. Rozanov was coming to Montreal. He’d be in the same locker room, skating on the same ice, living in the same fucking city.

Shane Hollander has always been destined to Win. That is until Drumstrang's prospect Ilya Rozanov, the only man ever to best him, steps into his path. Creating yet another dangerous task Shane would have to get past to win.

Ilya groans in answer and squeezes his hand, though Shane can't tell if he meant to do that or not.

Suddenly, there are people all around them. Shane shifts protectively close before he realizes it’s the medical team.

“Hollander, get back to your bench,” someone says, but there’s no way Shane’s going. Even if he wanted to, Ilya’s gripping his hand like a lifeline, eyes finally locked on Shane’s face. Shane isn’t leaving him.

Ilya handles his emotions poorly and has a very public meltdown.

Once outside, he leaned forward and put his hand against the cold stone wall. His phone was still to his ear, the message still recording.

Shane took the phone away from his ear and held it between both hands as though he were praying. He realized he was on the floor and didn’t know how he got there. He was crying. He was fairly certain he was hyperventilating.

His brain was desperately trying to grab at anything. Any thread of logic. Any idea of what to do next.

I have to see him.

Yes. That made sense. Shane needed to get to Tampa. Now. He would go there. He would find Ilya. Ilya would be fine. They would be together. He would see him. Tell him how much he loved him. He had to go. He had to go now.

Flustered and cornered, Shane injects his Captain Voice into the conversation. “Ma’am, I understand that you’re upset, but I paid for this seat and am going to stay here. You’ll have to find someone else willing to change places or just fly with the seat you booked. I’m sorry I couldn’t help you.”

She hisses like a goddamn tea kettle, and starts to say, “You are the most selfish man I’ve ever—” when another voice behind her says, “You are blocking my seat. Move.”

Shane and the woman turn to assess the new arrival. It turns out that his seat partner is well above six feet tall, ripped as hell, and knows how to deliver an excellent bitch face. He’s also the hottest man that Shane has ever seen in real life, including a chance run-in with Jensen Ackles at a Stars game.

In Montreal with lingering concussion symptoms, Ilya is advised not to fly home for a few days, and the hospital won’t release him without assurances that he has someone to stay with him until his symptoms improve. Luckily, Shane conveniently has a condo in Montreal no one knows about and a few days before he has to travel again.

But Ilya’s symptoms don’t resolve after a few days. Which is okay; Shane can handle it. He can take care of Ilya, study Russian, lead his team into the playoffs, and keep Ilya’s continued presence in Montreal a secret. He can do everything, no problem. He is Shane Hollander after all.

19.⨳ Night Shift - 150k - Shane Hollander is just trying to survive—NYU biochemistry, hockey practice, and the graveyard shift at a Manhattan 7-Eleven. He's too tired to notice that his new regular customer is clearly Russian mafia, or that Ilya's interest in him goes beyond terrible coffee.

When Ilya gives him a $10k scarf and gloves, Shane sells them for rent money. Any normal person would be terrified. Ilya is fascinated.

21. ✸change your ticket - 25k - Under the guidance of his doctor and mostly out of desperation due to his last annual heat being severe enough to nearly land him in the hospital, Shane Hollander knows he needs to take a heat partner for the first time if he doesn’t want to end up in a cycle facility. With his options between hiring a comfort alpha or asking one Ilya Rozanov for help, the choice is clear to Shane. It takes Ilya’s brain a few moments to process, to catch up, to piece together this half-filled puzzle Shane’s laying out for him.

“We talked about having babies,” Ilya supplies, arching an eyebrow, “are you trying to say we are…having a baby?”

Shane sucks in another slow, controlled breath. “Um, yeah. That’s what I’m trying to say.”

“You are pregnant?”

Wincing, the shorter man nods. “Mhm.”

He leaves the bathroom before Shane is done, and this is the moment where a tiny inkling Shane has ignored all day becomes a full blown suspicion.

Love is the only thing that matters when someone is under general anaesthesia and a stranger is touching their brain, Shane thinks wildly. Love is literally the only currency worth anything in a room like this.

Long after Farah hangs up, the words keep echoing in Shane’s head. If he had thought his thoughts had been chaotic this morning, when his biggest problem had been his rival potentially fucking him when he came to Montreal in two weeks, that’s nothing compared to the code-red panic that started the instant he found out he was being traded to Rozanov’s team.

Rozanov, who was supposed to be his great career rival. Rozanov, who he’s hooked up with twice now. Rozanov, who had been planning on coming to Shane’s apartment in Montreal to fuck him the next time they saw each other. God, how on Earth is Shane going to walk into his locker room in Boston in a few days time?

The impending awkwardness of dealing with Rozanov is almost enough to eclipse the hurt he’s trying to ignore. The knowledge that Montreal values him so little that they’re willing to dispose of him only six months into his rookie season. Almost, but not quite.

What he finds instead is Shane Hollander, amazing perfect Shane Hollander, and the uncomfortable realisation that the thing he’s been trying hardest not to want might be the only thing that actually feels like what he needs.

As lines blur and tempers rise, Troy learns the hard way that wanting to belong can turn into wanting to keep, and that some things aren’t up for negotiation, especially when there’s a Russian captain who’s already decided what’s not on offer.

It lasted only two seconds before he managed to compose himself. Shane Hollander is tired of wanting someone he cannot have, and he’s dying as he waits for someone who will not stay. Someone who doesn’t want to stay, not when there are so many others waiting for him. Fun of another variety, Shane left a treat amongst many.

And Ilya liked seeing Hollander in his clothes- or well, he didn't usually see them on Hollander, but knowing that he had them was enough. Ilya didn't have an explanation why he liked it so much. He tended not to think about it too much.

40. ⨳Moment - 34k - All Shane had wanted to do was watch his fiancé play hockey. But when Ilya takes a hit their secrets start crashing down around them.
