My mother was talking to me about how influencers or media personalities in our country and in other Islamic countries "eventually descend into further "freedom"; allowing themselves to transgress more and more because it has become normalized for them to go against Islamic rules", in the sickening way where she uses science to justify religious restrictions: she says that "the more someone is exposed to something the more it becomes normal for them, even though said thing is not normal", and while that is true- adaption is a real thing which happens when you frequent any space, regardless of its morality and its actions, she uses it to discredit those who get over their religious shame and fear of "sin" which mostly is just normal things demonised by the religion and by culture, made out to be actions with huge consequences, which don't exist or hold the same weight in other countries. Islam shifts the scale of normalcy; severely limiting the scope of what is "allowed" for its followers based not in reality but what religious scholars discern from ancient texts.

Yes I know how corrupt the entertainment industries are, but Muslims weaponise that, and propose Islamic restrictions as the solution. They try to make out the reason why abuse is so rampant, why particularly women, children, or marginalized groups are primarily victimized by their rich agents and companies to be the consequence of "free-mixing, music and depiction of living things"- falsely blaming creativity for the sins of powerful men and their systems. They think that slut-shaming these women and forcing them to let go of their livelihoods instead of reforming the systems they suffer under is the good solution, or rather punishment for their audacity to try to balance their deen with their dreams and talents, and tipping close to the latter with time.

beyond the whole heaven being materialistic thing, do any other aroaces feel like religion literally can’t appeal to you?

all of the rules were made on the basis that we’re all allo/hetero. i have to cover my legs. why? they’re just legs.

i never understood that people (men, in my case) are genuinely attracted to them.

the concept of modesty, which i hate in general, literally has made no sense to me. why do people need to cover up? who is getting attracted to some guy’s kneecaps???

if i resist my urges here, i can have them all in our non guaranteed afterlife.

remember seeing a post complaining about how churches are illegal in Saudi arabia so there is none in the entirety of tge big ass country. and people were defending the idea by saying "well there are no mosques in the Vatican either" which was a ridiculous comparison since the Vatican is quite literally a church. like it's entirely consisted of a church. it's not an actual country it's just one church.

anyways. fast forward to now. there is indeed a muslim prayer room in the Vatican. so yeah.

This kind of cultural relativism, and more broadly equation of cultural and national identity to religiosity is a dangerous trick up Islamic governments' sleeves, used to justify their unwillingness to relinquish Islamic superiority in favor of equality.

examples of such is:

refusing to secularize by claiming that is "western colonization and erasure of identity" (when Islam literally is a colonially-imposed identity on most Islamic countries historically)

justifying cruel capital punishments and restriction of freedoms such as the execution or criminalization of LGBTQ individuals, or modesty and hijab laws, by saying "it's their country, and we should respect their rules", when no such "respect" is given to Western countries when they impose rules limiting religious freedoms and expression (regardless of whether they are just or not- that is a conversation for another post)

equating religious dissent to "treason", blasphemy to "insulting religious feelings and disrupting religious harmony"; claiming these give arise to societal violence and unrest, while ironically having overblown reactions to these "offenses"; heavily persecuting and punishing people who do these things against Islam- but letting those who do it against other religions (often to minority groups in the regions under Islamic law) free to insult, as loudly and unabashedly as they like- with some even calling for violence and restrictions against followers of these religions.

Imposing religion on people born from certain cultures, ethnicities, and races; claiming that the religion is a key, inseparable aspect of these identities, and declaring those who don't abide by religious customs as "mentally colonized", "westernized", or not a part of the identity anymore. Ironically, Islamic ideals weren't part of these cultures in the first place as they have been imposed forcefully in a lot of cases, often erasing or muting down these cultures.
