“ Sorry to dissapoint you, but I’m more of a vidcon and comic con type of girl. ”
“Oh, no. I’m not disappointed. That’s almost better... or almost worse?”
“ so, i’m so tired of people talking about the olympics. at first it was cool and all but now i can’t wait to this end. ”
“Yeah, I imagine you get more excited for the National Spelling Bee, right?”
i have an unopened fifth of jose cuervo tequila sittin’ on my nightstand if someone wants to help me down it. i’m too pleased with my life to drink alone.
“Reserve?” Lux glanced up from painting her nails to ask. After a beat, she wrinkled her nose as she qualified, “or - ugh - gold?”
so this morning i was rudely woken up from a sound sleep by the slamming of a door somewhere in the house. deciding to investigate, i walked out into the hallway and came face to face with a random guy coming out of one of my new sisters’ bedrooms. i’m not sure if he just didn’t grasp the whole ‘walk of shame’ concept or if he was purposely trying to draw attention to the fact that he got laid but either way, it was an interesting morning in the kappa house.
“Oooh, was it that pledge with the bad lip fillers?” Lux leaned in conspiratorially. Grinning wickedly, she added, “--that could be any of them, though.” This year’s crop were particularly tragic, all Juicy Couture track pants and Kylie Jenner lip kits. Lux had been doing her best to wean them off of their tack in time for picture day, but sometimes she wanted to grab them by their three-month-old hair extensions and shake them. “I’m sure we weren’t like that when we first got here, were we? I mean, I definitely never brought home some random guy --And before you say it, a Calvin Klein model is not just ‘some random guy.’”
“could’ve said brittany murphy, but that’s a bit morbid.” he glances down at the boxes. “wouldn’t want to jinx you, or anything.”
“Pfft, yes you would,” Lux scoffed, knocking one of the boxes across the table at him, like an air hockey puck, “you’ve probably already got your funeral outfit planned --scratch that, you’ve probably already got your excuse to get out of the funeral planned.”
“New York is a different country. Maybe it ought to have a separate government. Everybody thinks differently, they just don’t know what the hell the rest of the United States is.”
Henry Ford
the situation does little to pique genuine interest from hayes, the bottle blonde pegging the antics down to lux’s usual theatrics. he spares a look up from his phone only to attribute the source of the sound before he retorts with a lazy, “go for it, nicole richie.”
“Nicole Richie?” Lux repeated absently, playing with the trinket boxes, “I got ‘Lindsay Lohan’ from your pal Harlan, the other day...So at least I’m on the up.”
Being a fake is a detestable quality in a person, but it is especially loathsome in a handbag…..

“i said campus sweetheart, not campus kiss-ass,” harlan’s mumbling between breaths, fixed eyes travelling down the length of her fragile legs where they’re crossed delicately over one another. “we’re on different wave lengths, princess. you’ll end up in rehab, i’ll end up on the top of the world.” there’s a bite behind his words, pointed and trechant. “unlike you, this isn’t the end of the road for me. you’ll rot probably keel over at the ripe old age of twenty-four. alone. just another washed up heiress that goes out just how everyone’s always imagined she would.” she’s barely adjusted her posture, so much as drawn her lips shut before harlan’s on his feet. he’s a blur as he crosses the room one step, two steps and his fingers are curling around the angle of her jaw, dark eyes growing impossibly darker. “you keep your goddamn mouth shut about her. i don’t know what your fuckin’ issue is, but you’re not going to drag margot through the mud like that, not around me, not around anyone. what about that can’t you wrap your head around?”
Lux flinched, drew back away from him a fraction, then steadied herself --and actually leaned in to meet his gaze.“Or what?” She scoffed, batting his hand away, “--I think we both know you’re not going to hit a girl, Harlan.” After a beat, she shrugged, “I mean...”, and her tone was such that the ‘not again’ didn’t have to be added aloud. Even Harlan wasn’t dumb enough to pull that shit twice --surely? Shrugging again, she sat back for long enough to quip, “I’d probably like it, anyway.”
--But a moment later she’d ducked away, and was gathering her things back up into her bag; deliberately slow so that he knew she wasn’t running scare...Not that she could, in these heels. “You started it. --And you’re only upset because you know it’s true.” Which it was. Margot was playing both Harlan, and the world’s tiniest violin...But why should Lux care? If music be the fruit of love, and all that...She pulled her bag up on to shoulder, and stood to face Harlan, “you’re a real bastard, you know that?”
On her way out the door, she paused to snatch his magazine off the desk, “--And I’m taking this with me.”
“you get one spoon, max. i’ll sell the rest on ebay. can see the ad now now is your chance to own a silverware set previously occupied by the lindsay lohan wannabe, lux austin,” his tone is gradually rising, voice booming like an announcer before it’s dissolving into a few stray chuckles. “well, you were the one to provide it, right? still makes you the primary antagonist in this story. corrupting the campus sweetheart with your dirty needles. disgraceful.” at first, his only reply is a disgruntled moan, and he’s shifting on his side to face her, fingers rolling the loose threads of his comforter between his fingers. “in the name of love, blondie. i take it you wouldn’t know a whole lot about that, yeah? no, you’re too busy wasting your time on getting baked.”
“Campus sweetheart?” Lux repeated, quirking an eyebrow across at him, “--no, I never gave anything to Emma.” After a beat, her brows furrowed together, and she waved him away again, “take some responsibility for yourself, asshole...That’s the first thing they teach you in rehab, you know? Might as well start learning it now.”
“Fuck off,” she snapped, her tone sharp --well,even sharper than usual. Bristling, she sat up straight, and scoffed, “because you’re the authority on relationships, right? Pfft, you can’t even get Margot to date you, and she’ll do anything with anyone.”
“what business would i have with your goddamn silverware? i’m not so poor that i’d swipe it from under your nose,” he fires back, nose wrinkling when a scowl draws his lips downward. “you’d be privileged to have sex with me. i’m very good at it. ask anyone.” the sharpness of her voice almost elicits a flinch from him, and his head’s whipping toward her so fast it makes his brain swim. “it’s not her fault, it’s mine. for getting caught. for using in the first place. actually maybe it’s your fault.” harlan’s opening his arms wide, throwing her a look that screams try me as she dramatically sinks down into his chair. he’ll have to febreze that later. “as far as i know, it’s all gone. couldn’t bear to watch. had to leave the room and pretend i hadn’t taken a thousand bumps beforehand. i’m almost as pathetic as you are. almost.”
“Well when you steal my cutlery, could you at least leave the spoons?” Lux sighed up at his ceiling, “because you’re driving me to heroin.” She waved a hand in his direction, but didn’t look bother looking across to scoff, “God, I didn’t force feed you...You came looking for me, remember? It’s not my fault you’re a lightweight...You take a couple of gummy vitamins and go running to Lola.”
“No. You’re definitely more pathetic,” she raised her head enough to look at him, sprawled out across his bed like a fucking Romantic nude, “you let that girl walk all over you...And she’s not even doing it in good shoes.”
“Funny.” Gregory said without any emotions on his face. “Most of my body is covered up in tattoo’s and yet I managed to find myself a job”
“What, why d’you have a job?” Lux asked, in the incredulous tone in which most people would ask ‘why do you have a bag full of dead rats?’ Her head snapped up from her phone to look at him as though he were mad, “aren’t you in Sigma? What, so you manage hedge funds after class?”
“i haven’t tried to sleep with you because i’m afraid of finding a knife in my back the next morning. not even sure if it’d be you who put it there.” her insults ring almost as compliments to him anymore, and harlan doesn’t have the energy to repress the smug smile she’s planted on his face. “i’m sure you have a terrible taste, too. do you even take care of the downstairs?” he’s leaving the conversation there with a halfhearted hum that bubbles up from his throat, gaze flicking over and following the frantic movement of her hands as they dig away through his things. in this light, it’s easier to see how spindly her fingers are, breakable. “gonna have to relapse another day, princess. margot found out, flushed everything i had. i haven’t done anything in, like, three days, so in short, you’re shit out of luck.”
“Oh? See, I’ve never tried to sleep with you because I’m afraid you’ll steal all my silverware in the night,” she hummed thoughtfully, and shrugged, “--so I suppose neither of us had anything to be afraid of.”
“What? Margot?” Lux snapped, turning over her shoulder to roll her eyes at him, “God, I said you had terrible tasted in women...Well what now, then? I need drugs in order to make you bearable.” She sighed dramatically, and collapsed back against his chair as though she were already exhausted by him. Speaking to his ceiling, she sighed again, “I feel like stabbing you now.”
After a beat, she raised her head enough to look at him as she asked, incredulous, “--did she even take the weed? Weed doesn’t count!”
“you’re a skeleton, yourself. i’m sure you can squeeze in one more,” he’s commenting, letting his knees buckle and body drop down to meet the plushness of his mattress. it groans under his weight. “what would it explain, exactly? my multiple girlfriends? my dirty girl magazines? my tinder account?” he’s just adjusting the pillow under his aching neck when he’s steeling himself at her words. “ alright, what about them? don’t tell me you’ve finally decided to give them up.”
“Well, it would explain why you haven’t tried to sleep with me yet,” Lux explained, sounding almost indignant about it despite the fact that she had multiple girlfriends, too. “--I could never sleep with someone with such terrible tastes, anyway.”
“Oh, I give up all the time,” she waved him away, “I’ve given up twice today, already --but right now I’m ready for a relapse...What’ve you got? Matt and I used the last of mine.” Swivelling around in his desk chair, she began rumagging through the drawer she’d found his magazines in, looking for his stash, “--if it’s up your ass, I’m out. Leave that shit for your coach.”
“and the women that are in those glittery bikinis. i get it, pup, you’ve got one foot out of the closet.” she’s pushing him away with those twigs she calls arms, and harlan has to purposely shift himself a couple of steps back. he doesn’t want to make her feel bad is all, but it’ll be a cold day in hell when she’s physically capable of forcing him away. “i don’t, i was just a victim of circumstances.”
“No. My closet is already too full of skeletons for me to fit in, too,” she shrugged, sinking back in Harlan’s desk chair and crossing one bare leg over the other --which was surprisingly difficult to do gracefully, in a swivel chair. “I don’t mind if you’re gay --it’d explain a lot, actually.”
“Anyway, I didn’t come here to talk about sex,” she swiftly changed the subject, “no, don’t be distasteful --I came here to talk about drugs.”
“because i’m a thorn in your side, yeah? i think it’s fitting, too.” he’s dropping his backpack off on the floor and advancing on her, planting a hand in the middle of the page so she doesn’t have the chance to turn it. “you’re about to get to the sticky part, and you really don’t want that. but they’re all yours. didn’t know you had a thing for girls.”
“I’m not,” Lux snapped the magazine shut on his hand, “I just really love 80′s blow-outs and glittery bikinis.” Pushing the Playboy - and his magazine - away, she wiped her hands off on his shirt --then paused a moment and wiped her hands again on her own shirt. “Didn’t know you had a thing for old men.”
