“It’s awfully messy business.” It’s said so casually, throwing her hair over her shoulder as she takes a demure sip of her coffee. She should know, she was involved in a plan for a coup and in a whatever-the-hell Spike’s plan could be called. Goodness. Men. “I wouldn’t suggest you go into it half-assedly.”
But that’s not the point!
“Oh, no, I’m-“ a pause. “Independently wealthy.” Which is to say, currently unemployed and in hiding but with a big pile of money saved up from when I was active in a crime syndicate.
Hmm. She lights a cigarette deftly.
“I just like to come here for the cat and the coffee.”
Most business is. The joys and perils of capitalism! “Oh no, I put my whole bottom into everything I do. Never half of it.” Ha! “So, you’re either an heiress or a conwoman.” She nods once, in approval, or acceptance, but doesn’t pry further, “You’ve done good for yourself then.” Strong women best women. “Are you from around here?”
“Something like that...” Her Hand unoccupied by a mug scratched mildly behind the proprieter’s ear, the cigarette moving from one side of her mouth to the other as she exhaled a lungful of smoke, handsfree.
“Born and raised right here in Tharsis, yeah. You?”
lvftschloss:
“I’m not going to hurt you.” Saying that felt necessary, given the uncertain circumstances that had brought the younger woman to this wet Martian alleyway. Julia wondered quietly about the girl, if she was from around here (unlikely, she seemed like she’d once been loved), and what the hell exactly had happened to her- those burns were suspect…
But, more important things to think about right now. Like if she could stand. And why Julia still brought strays home. “Can you walk, or should I get my car? We aren’t going far…”
She blinked blankly at her reassurance, not fully buying it but too tired to refute it. As if to answer her question she slowly shuffled closer to her, then groaned as the heat of her burns flared up; at least in the rain it numbed the fresh wounds.
Well, that answered that well enough. Well manicured brows drew together, and she gingerly placed a hand on her shoulder.
“I’ll be right back.”
And she was, quick as a whip, from her trip to the curb outside her building a block away— returning with her car, she left it running as she came back for the girl, helping her to her feet.
“Just a few steps and you can sit back down, alright?”

“I’m afraid I only represent her in land disputes, but I still accept personal bribes.” And though I’m fairly certain a ‘personal bribe’ is just a gift, Julia is nonplussed. She simply bends over to brush a leaf off of her boot as the woman coos over the cat. Immediately, she’s caught between loving and distrusting her— but that could always be an exciting combination.
Rafael was over quickly with a familial smooch to the top of her head and a strong cup of black coffee with exactly three shakes of cinnamon in it. Smiling her Mona Lisa smile and gently patting her favorite barista once on the cheek with a thank you, Julia held the hot cup in her hands. She does realize how hot it is outside, yes, but that won’t stop her from having a hot drink.
“That, or you can attempt to enter into a land war with Miss Puca— but I don’t suggest that.”
“Excellent.” Marie loves engaging in corrupt practices. She’ll be hearing from her soon.
“Mmmm, I’ve never been a war monger.” She doesn’t care to hurt others, only herself, thank you! “But I will keep it as an option.” Open options are good–Means more freedom, and who doesn’t love that?
She sips her fruity tea, “Is being this darling creature’s representative all you do? Or do you have a little business on the side?”

Shit. Okay.
Try as she may, try as she may to quell the habit, Julia could be soft. It was a fatal flaw, it had kept her tethered to Mars for so long, it had ruined so much of her life… Still, her soft heart, she couldn’t just leave the girl here in the rain. She had to do something.
“Come with me. Let’s get you dry and warm.”
Her shoulders dropped as the last of the coughs left her, clearly exhausted. Though her hands remained by her mouth as she blinked at the blonde and hesitantly nodded.

The Spring Festival always drew in tourists. Nor surprising- while Alba City boasted it’s halloween parade, Tharsis hosted the largest celebration of the Lunar new year outside of earth and- really- it might actually be bigger than the biggest ones on earth, now. She’d have to look that up. The holiday has morphed and changed with time and, obviously, location but at its core it was still the same as what the early Chinese settlers had brought over. But bigger, much bigger, as the city grew and became the home of the Red Dragons as well as a newer upstart syndicate calling themselves the Green Wolves. Julia figured the syndicate’s should get more creative with their names but what did she know? She was a deserter.
That wasn’t the point, anyway. The point was: there were too many tourists in Tharsis around this time, the bumped up population and rainy season making the overcrowded city feel suffocating in the humidity and heat. You could always tell the tourists, too. Skittish. Heading down the wrong streets and holding their too large umbrellas as if they could protect them- easy targets for quick fingered children and fresh syndicate recruits. Her own time picking those pockets brought an odd smile to her lips, of course her thievery was more a product of boredom than desperation.
Heading down a side street, further from the dancing many legged dragons heading down the street after their show had finished, Julia ducks into one of her usual haunts- a small cafe owned by a deceased old woman’s cat, technically, and run by said decedent’s unamused and ungrateful son.
Shaking out her umbrella and sitting on one of the overstuffed couches there in, she watches a young woman with dark hair stroke gently the fur of the owner on the opposite end of the couch as Rafael (a young man who’s been working here since time immemorial— how did he seem to never age?) spotted her and started on her usual order.
“Her name is Puca, she actually legally owns this place, if you could believe it.”

Oh! To be called something as uncouth as a tourist! As dirty and as filthy and as lowlife! It's all true, including the descriptors, but she's still allowed to be hurt by it.
Had they met out in the rain, Julia would have found her without an umbrella--Not for any particular reason aside from dramatics. Walking around in the rain is cleansing. And fun! Marie likes to pretend she's the tragic heroine in an opera or play--Mainly because they're allowed to die at the end. And oh, is she waiting for the end.
"Really?" She's absolutely delighted at this news! A capitalist cat! Alliteration is such a joy, "I think I just might--Do you own this place gorgeous?" Her cooing at the animal does little to illicit a response (usually, when it comes to cats, as long as they continue to get pets, they're satisfied), aside from a flick of the tail and a twitch of an ear. Marie giggles anyways, looking especially girlish despite physically appearing about forty, "How wonderful. I've an in with the owner of a fine establishment. Do you take bribes, lovely?" She scratches behind the cat's ears with deep maroon nails, "Or does this lovely woman represent you in all business transactions?" Speaking, of course, about Julia.
