every fiber of her knew how easy it would be to mold herself into him, to believe every word dripping from his mouth and take his word for it. it would be as easy as all the times she had done it before but she couldn’t help at least trying to stop herself this time. “i’m tired adam.” her voice was quieter than she intended, the words wavering as she looked up at him, his closeness to her doing nothing to help her resolve. “i’m tired of always being second best to something.”
he can see now there is little hope for this to turn out the way he wants. he can see the defeat in the slump of her shoulders, her resolve in walking away. how could he fix something she saw as irreparable? he supposed he couldn’t, never had the will to, anyway. he knew his words were meaningless, but he still didn’t want her to leave. “i know you are,” he says, his tone apologetic. he knows it’s him that’s caused the dark circles under her eyes. he can see what he’s doing to her, but god, walking away wasn’t that simple. she was the only thing in his life that stuck around, the only thing he could take for granted. and he did. of course he did. he lets out a long sigh before meeting her gaze. “but i still don’t want you to go. you’re not second best,” the words are assuring, but he knows the reality. something would come up, and he would abandon her again. “you’re the only thing that matters.”
