āHoria,ā She repeated, each syllable falling through her lips as though they were something sacred, āthatās a nice name. It suits you.ā
Ā Ā Though it wasnāt like she really knew; she simply didnāt know what else to say. Monica had never been skilled with goodbyes. A light āSee you later!ā she could handle, knowing that she would surely interact with the person again, but it was no secret to her that Horia was one to wander, and very unlikely to settle in one place for long. In truth, she envied that in him; not growing so attached to places or people that he couldnāt leave whenever he fancied.
Ā Ā Monica watched on as Horia stood, wondering if he might be as hesitant as she was to see him leave, but she doubted that possibility with each passing minute -- minutes spent longingly and forlornly gazing at an ever-present mirth. For her, though, it was melancholy, and she knew the look on her face would not have denied that. She just hoped he hadnāt noticed, and indeed he never brought it up even as she released the barrier once more for him to pass through. The two exchanged one last farewell glance, and when Horia had walked for a distance a wave followed, Monica staying affixed until she could no longer hear his footsteps or rustling in the bushes.
It was half an hour past dark when Monica finally made her way back home to worried parents. They didnāt care so much about the time of her arrival, but rather about who she was with -- some robed human gargantuan as they had heard it, and a man no less! In a community as compact as Veraet, word had traveled quickly to Monicaās parents, and they couldnāt have found her soon enough without the additional worry of missing out on work and other responsibilities. Yet still, they were not blind to Monicaās feelings -- knowing she hadnāt been hurt or taken advantage of was enough relief for them to let the subject rest. More answers could wait for later.
The following day Monicaās mother, Lena, had entered her daughterās room, the goal being to ensure she was awake. With a habit of sleeping in this was not an uncommon gesture, but it soon became apparent to her that not only was Monica awake, but that she had been awake for most of the night, evidenced by a pair of tired, puffy eyes and red-tinted cheeks. Lena sat beside her daughter and caressed her as only a mother could, and without asking questions had told Monica to explain her feelings and shed light on her situation. What ensued was an hour-long discussion of how Monica had stumbled upon this now long-gone human, their short adventures together, the way he looked, his wonderful name -- and it was then the signs became apparent to her. Beside her she saw a young lady with deep, blossoming feelings, and as much as she wanted to tell Monica that things would get better soon or to give her hope that he might return, she knew it would not only be fruitless, but cruel. By Monicaās description there was only one thing that man could have been; not an ordinary human, but a very special breed, and quite similar to another of his kind she had met in much the same way, one stumbling across the other long before she had met Monicaās father. No, there was no hope for Monica but time and the eventual fading of memory.
Ā Ā āHe will most likely never return here,ā Lena thought, āand even if he did, it will be many years from now, as storm wizards are accustomed.ā
Ā Ā Lena simply couldnāt find it within herself to explain the ways of these humans, nor did she believe it would matter in the long-run. Monica rightly believed Horia to be a passing traveler; it was an accurate enough assumption that she could live with.
Ā Ā āI am very sorry you lost a good friend, my love. But there are so many wonderful people out there -- Iām sure youāll come across someone you like just as much. Youāll see.ā
Ā Ā āI hope youāre right, mother. I just miss him.ā
The beginning two weeks following Horiaās departure were no easier than the first day, though gradually Monicaās sadness had traded hands with nostalgia, her mind filled with wistful memories of the two of them together, every spot they had touched becoming a site for daydreams and long bouts of pondering. She had made a habit of visiting their places when she had the time, starting in the woods to practice her archery, and ending in the evenings where they shared their dinner. This particular day was different, though. It was Monicaās turn to wash the familyās laundry, and on a hot summerās day there was no better time to get a generally monotonous chore done. The sun shone through mild clouds, the wind blew just strongly enough to dry the clothes, and Monica was privy to a secluded little spot right outside the village to be alone with her thoughts and, time permitting, take a dip.
Ā Ā Leaving her satchel beside an empty clothes basket, Monica proceeded to hang freshly washed laundry onto a few low-hanging branches near the river she had chosen, deciding afterward that she had time to kill while they dried, and that she was so unbearably hot that the cool waters might do her some good.
Ā Ā She had stripped down to just her bottom small-clothes and stepped into clear running water, going further into a calm area to submerge the rest of herself. The area was one largely unfrequented by anyone but the occasional bear, and even then she had planned for that, having left an offering of fresh berries and fish far from where she would be. Monica felt an ultimate peace wash over her as she closed her eyes, remembering vaguely that there was something she needed from her satchel, but unsure exactly of what that might be...
Ā Ā And then she was still. Silent. Eyes wide open.
Ā Ā There were footsteps in the distance, distinctly two-legged. Monica was frozen in place, half-naked under crystalline water, and utterly defenseless. She considered, at first, getting out to dress, but it would have been much too easy for this person to see her -- and how embarrassing! Yet if she stayed in, this someone might overstay their welcome, or worse yet, join her, or make off with her things! What was she to do but think the situation to death, only to ultimately decide to hide behind a rock and assess the situation from afar in some vain hope that she wouldnāt have to directly interact with somebody?

Monica grinned.
Ā Ā Ā Ā āCall it ageless paranoia.ā
She wasted no more time in entering the village. Talisman in hand, the young elf chanted a one-word song, the barrier before them opening in a ripple like a stone tossed into still waters. She looked proudly onward at Horia for having been able to show him something that had him genuinely intrigued, and for the time being, all doubts about him had washed away. This still-unnamed stranger was now her guest, and as such was beckoned in with open arms (lest he get himself stuck in the wall of the barrier).
Their first stop had been the aforementioned marketplace, an area rich with life and wares, the smell of warm food and freshly worked leather carried through the place with every gentle breeze. The two wandered at a good pace, Monica leading Horia to the essentials first, then allowing him the lead, his curiosity taking them where he wanted to go.
Near the end of the day their focus had shifted to dinner, as the lingering scents of meat and vegetables had been on their minds all afternoon. Monica obliged to pay for both their meals and then some for Horiaās upcoming departure, which was a silent venture indeed. After spending so much time walking and talking the quiet was a relaxing change of pace, but it had left Monica to forlorn thoughts of boredom and future loneliness knowing her adventurous compatriot would soon be on his way. She had yet to meet anyone who shared her interests or so excellently added new information into her journals; someone who genuinely surprised and perplexed her, a mystery for the ages she yearned to explore. Her good mood had soured greatly at the thought of losing the first person to have the qualities she enjoyed, her eating pace slowing to an eventual stop in favor of glancing Horiaās way, quietly watching him as he observed his surroundings. Monica noted fragrant flowers in the distance, a light breeze rustling tall grass, and how the setting sun lit his features; how it seemed to light his hair aflame and the shadows he cast atop the rock he had sat upon. A feeling welled up in her stomach just then; one scarcely described by one word, but rather by many: happy reminiscence, short-lived nostalgia, dread, sadness, and -- Wait. When did he look back at her..!?
A sudden jolt of self-realization hit her like a slap in the face, and quickly Monica stood, urgent to find anything to excuse her mindless staring.
Ā Ā Ā Ā ā-- Oh! Sorry. Was I..? Never mind. Itās, uh-ā She pointed vaguely to Horiaās right, referencing the setting of the sun.
Ā Ā Ā Ā āItās getting rather late. You... Mentioned wanting to leave before dark. I thought Iād remind you. Youāre more than welcome to stay, of course, but you seem pretty intent on leaving.ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā Had she always been this prone to rambling..? But wait just a moment.
To further pull the conversation away from yet another blunder, Monica placed a hand on her hip and raised a half-serious brow.
Ā Ā Ā Ā āBefore you go, though, I have a question to ask -- since you managed to avoid it all day. What is your name, exactly..? And why havenāt you told me? I couldnāt possibly use it to bind you, or whatever it is fae do. I am no fae and there is nothing special about me, but I would like to know the name of a friend.ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā Did that statement take courage on her part? Absolutely.
Ā Ā Ā Ā Was she able to feign that kind of confidence? After spending time with someone who naturally exuded it, surprisingly... Yes.
Ā Ā Ā Ā Did she really consider Horia a friend? Partially. Having a good time with someone or not, Monica held relatively high standards. She wanted to be friends, of course, but not if he continued any distrust of her.

š¤Ā If they could switch bodies or lives with any one person, who would it be?
In canon thereās no doubt in my mind that sheād switch places with my actual protagonist, Nathaniel, for reasons such as wanting to see life from a new perspective (which Nathaniel wouldnāt take issue with because he wants to know more about her way of life as well). She wants to understand what he describes as a well-off life in human society, and tbh... Sheād use his position in society to help the poorer folk and misplaced elves.
š„ In a fire, they can only save three things (including people). Who/what do they save?
If weāre saying this fire is at her home or village, Iād say sheād ditch most material possessions... But sheād definitely take her log/sketch book, the ones she catalogues plants and things in, her mother, and father. In a survival situation like that, only the most important things matter.
š»If they were a ghost, what methods would they use to haunt someone?
I so enjoy this idea! If Monica were a ghost, she would most definitely be the helpful sort, but not in an obvious way. She would haunt only those who need guidance. If someone were lacking understanding for a certain subject or person in their lives, she would leave them little omens or signs for them to interpret themselves, blow little gusts of wind to point them to the right page and let a leaf fall onto a passage meant just for the reader, that sort of thing. A sort of gentle and far-off mentor that would scarcely reveal herself, if at all.

The very first sound to exit her mouth was one of disgust; a kind of -ach- that meant something along the lines of, "Don't be ridiculous." Rolled eyes accompanied this verbal gesture, the warmth of her face slowly dissipating. Monica continued to ignore certain aspects of the conversation, the ones designed to fluster her further, but soon enough she found herself drawn back in and eager to know more about what he wanted.
Her ears perked up at his mentioning being a fellow herbalist and of elven specialty herbs, and the smallest hint of satisfaction showed through a bright little smile. There were many parts of elven culture that had, over time, become overstated or stereotypical, but if there was one thing the elves legitimately did well, it was the planting and harvesting of herbs and spices. The trade was a small but profitable one, and a part of life in which Monica took the utmost pride. Little else served to keep her interest throughout the years -- all other hobbies varied and were let go soon after their adoption. The study of plants, however - their uses, what could come of putting them together in a new way, how she could help her community with a tincture no one had created before - continually pulled her back throughout childhood, and had become Monica's most successful project in adulthood.
A wave of nostalgia washed over her as she thought about her life in this way, and pairing it with what knowledge she could acquire from the stranger before her put her in a sort of trance for a moment. She saw this man as not only someone who could keep up with her in wit, but as an opportunity to learn more about the craft she held dear, and above even that, a friend; someone who might understand why she was so passionate. Realizing her thoughts had overcome her, Monica suddenly shook her head and responded in agreement, fitting the bow in her hands around her body and checking the contents of her side-pouch.
"Seems everything's in order," she spoke mostly to herself, rummaging around the little bag for a moment before turning her attention back to Horia.
"You forgot to tell me your name, human. You'll have to tell me when we get there."
She could not overstate how tickled she was to finally tease him for a change, but Monica was not one to dwell on her victories, and she realized he may also be withholding for a reason. It was getting late in either case, and it wouldn't take long to reach the village if they left before sunset. Thus she waved her hand jovially for him to follow, and without further hesitation found herself back on the trail sure had come in on, glancing over her shoulder every now and then to ensure he was keeping up with her pace.
Less than an hour had gone by when the two had finally come to the village's Barrier, a field of magical energy surrounding its perimeter, where Monica made the decision to stop and address the man following her, preemptively taking a carved stone from her bag.
"This is it. I know it's hard to see in, but the market is just on the other side if you listen closely. Before we go in, though,"
Once again she pointed out the necklace, one brow raised in amusement.
"That thing will have to go. No one is going to do business with fang-man, I'm afraid. If you've nowhere to put it I'll hold onto it for you -- but otherwise you should be fine. Just let me know when you're ready."
