It was a fair question, but also a personal one. Rick was always strict about his boundaries, it was a lesson he learned early on, but Lorna had managed to occasionally bring him beyond yes or no answers. Those moments were few and far between, but they did exist. Right now he could see that something beyond the skyline was weighing on her mind, but it was best to keep his mouth shut. Right? Unless whatever it was were somehow relevant to his job. 

“It’s not that bad,” he said quietly, nodding to the view as he stepped up to the railing. Frowning, he looked askance at her, appraising, “Is there something you should be arrested for? Trespassing?” She hadn’t done anything illegal yet, but Rick knew better than to think she was just out and about, enjoying the air. “I think you should be telling me what the plan is, Lorna. C’mon. I’m not stupid.” 

Lorna followed him as he stepped up to take a closer look at the view. She motioned to the empty park. There wasn’t a soul that cared to step foot onto the park after dark. It seemed welcoming by day but by night it was a horrifying mystery to many. “I’ve never been a fan of taking in the view. Gotta see something more spectacular than buildings and night sky. I could get that at any city across the world.” 

“I could think of a few things but if you don’t know I’m not telling.” She shook her head wondering if he thought she was stupid. Only an idiot would confess their plan to the one person who would go out of their way to stop them. “I know you’re not but I’m not either. You think I’m going to tell you what I’m doing? I’ll be up front with this; if you plan on getting in my way I will pin you to Empire State Building for the entire night.” Lorna sighed stretching out her arms as she peered over the edge once more trying to find the van. “Why do you feel like you need be everyone’s executioner?” She wondered quietly.

It would seem that fate had determined that the only one of his children he would meet before they were grown was the one who had never lived beyond her childhood. Anya was the only one whose birth he’d been present for, whose first steps he’d watched. She was the only child he’d help teach to speak, or been able to watch learn about the world. Although those memories were terribly old, he still kept them close. He’d never have them with the twins or with Lorna, and he’d fared little better with his grandchildren. Still, all of that was his to make peace with. He didn’t speak of it. The regret was his own.

He’d kept tabs on Lorna as soon as he’d learned who she really was to him. Her work in the Underground was something that was both necessary and that he could respect, so he’d left her to it. There had been several times when he’d thought of reaching out to her, even wanted to, but he hadn’t. Now, he watched on the monitors in his study as she approached his door. The house itself was hardly as grandiose as someone might expect of Magneto, but the security was still heavy. He disabled it before she touched the door that first time, and by the fourth knock he was there to answer. 

“Lorna. What a surprise.” 

When the door opened Lorna sucked her breath in. This was a moment she never thought she would experience. People dreamed of the day they could talk to their parents again. While Lorna would never get that opportunity with her mom she had a chance with her dad. She was unlocking a Pandora’s box willingly; come what may. Lorna was taken aback that he knew her name. It lured her anger out of its sleeping corner. He knew about her but never went to go find her. It felt like a betrayal and the man had only said 5 words to her. Lorna pulled herself back in an instant reminding herself what her therapist used to tell her. Don’t assume judgement and open your heart to forgiveness. Back then she was dealing with destroying her neighbor’s stereo. However, Lorna danced with Wrath in all of its ugliness. 

“I-” She chuckled, realizing that she had no idea what to say to Erik. She had just assumed he wouldn’t answer. “You missed a few birthdays. I came to collect on those gifts.” She awkwardly joked rubbing the back of her neck. “Can I come in?”

“You continue to have some of the most blunt ways of stating matters than most people I have met, Lorna Dane.” Noh returned to her before a tiny frown played at his lips. “I had no such intentions to instruct these individuals in dressing as ‘sex workers’. It was my understanding that such employees rarely wear clothing to begin with, thus it would be difficult to dress like them in the first place.” He stated with a confused furrowed, but quickly jumped topics and nodded at her thanks.

“If I can be of use and pass these dull hours between eventful encounters, then you are welcome. After all, it is rather fitting - your group of ragtag mutants and metahumans that are displaced and seeking somewhere they can fit in; and my own history of being displaced into an unfamiliar universe. They are.. quite similar.” He explained.

“Guilty as charged. Never cared to sugar coat shit. It’s how people become ignorant. God forbid we become ignorant and make laws that sheltered that stupidity, am I right?” She briefly reminisced the struggled all of them had to take on Earth. The wounds were still fresh, but like all wounds it will become tougher and turn into a scar. A reminder to never let their guard down. Lorna forgot that Noh is still acclimating to everything even their slang and sarcasm. “It wasn’t- It was a joke.” She told him. 

Lorna’s eyes narrowed unsure if it was exactly the same thing but she wasn’t going to argue with that logic. “Is that so? Maybe I’ll move to another universe to see how it feels in your shoes.” She motioned for him to come inside. “I just hope this gives them some strength to take back what’s theirs one day. Whether that’s killing everyone who wronged them or joining you guys- or whatever you stand for.” She motioned with a wave of her hand towards Noh. “How long have you been on Earth?”

Jono would be a fool if he didn’t recognize the flash of green hair that interrupted the flare of red that sparked from his hand. Anyone would be a fool to not recognize the daughter of Magneto, the Mistress of Magnetism herself. While he’d never had the pleasure of meeting her in person, he certainly heard plenty. From what he understood, she was a force to be reckoned with that came with an attitude to boot — his kind of woman, really.

He offered her a quiet chuckle and snuffed the flame out by closing his fist. “S’pose I am, luv,” he agreed for the sake of agreement. Jono wouldn’t chalk anything up to luck; his life seemed have a dire deficiency in that department ever since his x-gene made its arrival with a bang. Any misgivings were meant for him. “Blowtorch, eh?.. Tha’s just great. I was tryin’ to go for’a ball of some kind. Somethin’ with a lil’ more finesse, y’know?”

Lorna has kept her head down. She knew of the heavy hitters, Superman, Captain America, Thor, the late Batman to name a few but she tried not to know them personally. Their moral compass never aligned with her own. When it came down to it she wondered if they really choose their own kind or still be slaves to the human race. It’s what kept her from joining any team or bothering to help anyone but her own kind out. Humans didn’t need another hero. They needed to learn some respect. Lorna’s distrust towards the elites and hatred she harbored for humans is what kept her from picking sides or knowing anyone. 

She seemed taken back, trying to hide her laugh behind a scoff. “Well uh A for effort.” She remarked. “I can’t help with that, but I know someone who can if you don’t mind taking a drive.” Lorna offered the man. She nudged her head towards the bridge. Her dingy car was hidden behind some thick bushes just to be on the safe side. “I’m Lorna by the way. You don’t speak I take it?” She motioned towards his attire and lack of verbal communication.

[ OPEN STARTER !! ]

To say that Jono was ever one for practicing his mutant ability passed blasting it with everything he had would be a bold faced lie. Today, he decided to try to change that and practice the curse that ravaged his now shell of a body. A rotting corpse filled with an immortal telepathic flame - it was no wonder he never bothered before. But with the ban lifted and NOVA out of their hair, not to mention the bridge in one piece and people relatively on the safer side, Jono figured a little practice couldn’t hurt.

He held out his hand and focused on channeling his flame through his palm, instead of through the gaping hole in his abdomen. While his palm was solid, there was a burst of flame that erupted from his hand. He was unable to hold it for long, as his concentration was broken by another’s wandering presence, but he took that moment to shoot them a nonverbal message. “Did tha’ look like a fire ball t’a you? Or did tha’ just look like a normal ol’ flame? Tell me tha truth. I can take it.”

Lorna was meeting with Selina Kyle to exchange gems for money. For whatever reason Selina couldn’t take the job that was 5 cities over, and Lorna needed money. Since she didn’t care to have a job but the world revolved around money Lorna had to find interesting ways to get cash. A lot of the time she was lucky that the Mutant Underground had strong connections and they were always able to bail each other out. However, it was the small things that she was left to get on her own. Things like food and water. Not to mention it didn’t hurt to tuck some cash away for a more inconspicuous form of transportation. 

She was walking back over the open field to find someone practicing their powers. Lorna always wondered how mutants with fire powers handled the heat. It looked painful. Her powers acted like phantom muscles that extended far beyond her inner circle. They flexed and were able to perform amazing things. The only time it truly hurt when she exuded too much or tackled things she has never tried. Lorna paused realizing she could hear him in her head. “Ahh I see,” She tapped on her head. “You’re lucky I wasn’t someone else.” She mused. “It looked like your hand was a blowtorch. What were you trying to go for?” She questioned as she approached the man.

Being saddled with what NOVA’s departure left behind put Rick in a precarious position. Without a curfew or agents to patrol the streets, the rise in crime was inevitable. On paper, at least. He was well aware of the questionable methods the agents used against anyone who wasn’t human and not a vigilante. The agency deserved to be taken down, not by a nuke, but he couldn’t even pretend to believe in their message. He’d worked with all kinds of people, psychopaths included, and they all bled the same color. Usually.

To him, there were good people and there were bad people. He didn’t care what or who those people were, just about what they did.

Lorna Dane wasn’t part of the reformation program, but that didn’t mean he would look the other way if - when - she was up to something. Their paths had crossed numerous times over the course of his career, in various ways, and the rapport was something that came naturally to him now. “I’m on the clock,” he corrected, frowning. “And I know you aren’t here for the view.” Rick was a pain in the ass, he knew it, and it was a label he was happy to lean into. If his presence was enough to prevent more chaos and bloodshed, then he’d stand there all night.

“When aren’t you on the clock?” She sighed. Whenever she ran into him it felt like he always had this urgency around him. She liked to encounter people like a light switch. Sometimes its on and there are moments you can fight. Then there is off times where the two can just talk about life or whatever shitty informercial they saw. Lorna definitely had no intent on getting to know Rick like that but she couldn’t help but wonder if Rick ever had an off switch. As she let her head hang she motioned towards the skyline. There was no point in denying the truth. Lorna and him could go back and forth all night when in reality she needed him to step aside. 

“Well you caught me I absolutely hate this view.” Lorna turned to face him still leaning on the railing for support. “So what’s the plan for tonight, Ricky? You going to arrest me?” She questioned. Lorna still was keeping an eye on the street for the van. She had a rough estimate of when they would arrive but she didn’t want to miss her window of opportunity. That was the problem with doing things without a well coordinated plan. You end up with long wait times and people getting involved.

There were a few things Lorna could never live without. Things like her combat boots, her jacket, keys, and coffee. If Lorna didn’t have coffee her crankiness would spike to a twenty versus the eight she normally rest at. Lorna stepped inside the Starbucks. It felt like there was one on every corner, but she religiously came back to the same one. There was a barista who made the absolutely best shaken espresso drinks and she was in love. Lorna had her moto leather jacket on with the hood pulled up. Her earbuds were blasting music from the early 2000′s in a desperate attempt to cling onto her youth. 

She never had the whole ‘it’s not a phase mom!’ that every teenager went through. So she continued to live comfortably in her alternative fashion and music. Lorna noticed someone out of the corner of her eye. At first she was sure her eyes were deceiving her because of the lack of coffee in her system, but doing a second glance it was definitely Bobby. She hadn’t seen him in years. Lorna pulled her ear buds out, “Bobby?” She asked pulling her hood down to look at him better. “Bobby Drake? Is that you?” She asked unsure if was seeing her old flame from long ago.

As tensions between father and son grew, Daken found it increasingly difficult to be within the same living quarters as him. Though he yearned for the warmth of his black cotton futon, the distant growls of Chou’s fox deterred him from a good night’s sleep. 

The futile efforts left the other heaving an exhausted sigh. It was evening, the remaining speckles of sunlight fading into the clouds. Once he packed a duffel bag, Daken left a note saying he was visiting a friend because he wanted to give Chou and U~otchā some “much-needed space.” He sent his message to Lorna moments before his arrival. 

In the present moment, Daken was browsing through his messages on Lorna’s guest bed, grimacing at the lack of responses he received to his absence. He acknowledged the other’s words, his nostrils taking in the smell of food she brought. He straightened himself on the edge of the bedframe, scoffing at her inquiry.

“No one,” he said, raising an index finger, matter-of-fact. “More like someone pissed me off. There’s a huge difference. As for who it is, let’s just say my past keeps coming back to bite me in the ass. Or rather, I should say, tear out my throat almost every fucking night.” 

Lorna began pulling out the different take out cartons for them to choose from. It was always work for Lorna. Living in the compound meant that she never had a moment for herself. She would often go into Star City but it was always for business or reflection. It would be nice for her to let loose, enjoy herself, but she told herself she couldn’t afford that luxury. There was too much at stake for her to slip up like that. 

It was the small moments like the one with Daken that reminded her she needed a life too. “Everyone pisses you off.” She countered, “That’s nothing new.” She motioned to the spread on the table for him to take. Lorna sat down in one of the rickety wooden chairs as she began to dig into her sesame chicken. “Sounds really kinky. You sure this isn’t some sex club you wandered into?” She joked. Lorna leaned back in her seat giving him a once over. “What happened?” She was honestly curious. It was like a soap opera of drama she liked to tune into on a regular basis.

Flashback; Double Trouble

Who: Jason Todd and Lorna Dane

When: Months ago, prior to NOVA’s exit from the city.

Since NOVA had ramped up their efforts and interference in Star City, Jason had made it Red Hood’s personal mission to get in their business and in their face. He had other things to do some nights, sure. Star City didn’t have the same seedy underbelly as Gotham, but damn if it wasn’t trying hard to get there. Still, that wasn’t constant. Other people dealt with it, too, and that gave him plenty of time leftover to trail NOVA’s vans after curfew. It wasn’t like their inhibitors meant shit for him. He was plain Jane human, aside from the minor boost granted to him by the Pit. 

He’d stayed on the high ground, literally, racing over rooftops as two of NOVA’s patrol vehicles followed one of their usual routes that he’d mapped out. They were hours past when everyone without a permit was meant to be inside, just hunting for someone to drag off to fuck only knew where. Even Jason hadn’t figured that part out. He just tried to keep it from happening in the first place. 

The sudden whine of brake pads and red tail lights brought him to a stop. He edged toward the lip of the roof he was on and watched as three…four…six agents got out, all decked out in their gear like they were doing something important. Really, all they’d managed to do was corner a couple of people who looked like teenagers. Kids just screwing around. As one of the agents pointed the beam of their flashlight toward them, Jason saw that one of them had what looked like iridescent scales on her arms. Figured. They wouldn’t have bothered with that kind of show for a human. He’d found out that much.

“Seems like overkill, guys,” he called down, lazily reaching for one of his pistols. The sound of his boots hitting the ground was a heavy one as he vacated his spot on the roof to join them. “I think I should even up the odds.”

NOVA’s presence was a hand over her throat. It wasn’t squeezing the life out of her but the pressure was there. She wanted to relieve the pressure that every normal superhuman had to deal with. Lorna had noticed the van taking off down the empty streets of Star City. It was unmarked and travelling with a destination. It was one of NOVA’s goons, she presumed. Lorna managed to look up in time to watch a familiar figure racing over top to track the van. 

Lorna made a quick decision to follow the van as well. She couldn’t out run them by foot so she took off into an alley way. The soles of her combat boots were lined with metal giving her the ability to fly. She soared upwards being careful to stay hidden as she took a different path to where the van ended up. Lorna stood on top of one of the fire escapes watching as Jason dropped down. The group were just stupid kids. The most they could do was graffiti a building. 

One of the NOVA guards turned their flashlight onto Jason while another pulled a gun out of their holster aiming it at Jason’s chest. “Sir, you have 5 seconds to back away before we take you in. We are authorized to kill any threats.” One of the agents spoke their voice was calm. The furthest agents still had the kids surrounded. One managed to tranquilize one of the teenagers. Lorna couldn’t stop it in time as she jumped off the fire escape. The agents had the scared kids complying to the treatment but they continued resist in hopes Jason or someone would step up. 

“Glad to see we’re all getting along.” Lorna announced her presence as she moved to stand next to Jason. “Put the needle down before I shove it up where you piss.” Lorna warned.  Her hands glowed a dark green, ready to move at a moments notice. The agents grew more apprehensive with more guns trained on them and even one of the boys who was clear mutant due to their skin. “Try it. I dare you.” She encouraged.

It was a hunch, a mere thought, that peaked Lorna’s interest. She knew Ivy in passing and she knew her affinity for affinity for plant life. It was all she ever talked about. One look and people knew she was the plant lady. Which in some ways was equally as weird as a cat-lady. Lorna and Pamela were different in a lot of ways but they shared an interest for the earth which made it seem okay for Lorna to even pester her. Lorna knocked on Pamela’s door hoping she was home.

Lorna pinched the bridge of her nose as she tried to remember where the last bit of linen went. With the constant migrants through the asylum she lost a lot of things. Lorna was one of the few that got her own private area. It used to be a huge office for one of the doctors. She turned it into her own studio apartment within the massive building. She also kept the other room open for Daken whenever he needed a bed. “Yeah I think... I think Cory took the last of them.” She was trying to remember what had happened to them. They were sitting on small table. 

“I’ll figure it out later when you’re ready to go to bed. I can’t be fucking bothered.” She motioned it with a wave of her hand. Lorna went ahead and grabbed Chinese food for the two of them. “It’s been awhile since you needed a place to crash.” She noted with a teasing smirk. “Who did you piss off this time?”

Lorna checked the address one more time as if it would magically change on her. Since coming to Star City she quickly found out her biological father was in town. It took her awhile to seek him out. She had been focusing on cementing a small stronghold and safety among the community. She hadn’t seen her father in years and a few more months wouldn’t hurt. She had thought about what she would even say to him. Each time coming up short and bereft of words. 

Somehow, when all other tasks were done she had nothing left but to say hi. Lorna was still learning about her situation. Hoping to find sense in the mayhem that was her life. She believed for most of it that her biological dad and mom both died on the plane crash. It wasn’t until later in life she found out she had a second chance. It was a bittersweet bit of information. Lorna fist barely reached the wood of the door, pausing briefly before continuing with the motion. She knocked a few times tucking her hands into her leather jacket. She didn’t know what to expect, but she was bracing herself for the worst.

Lorna was on her typical look out spot that was a major building that had a sky park. It was one of the many ways that they were trying to bring life in an otherwise concrete city. Lorna held onto the rails looking downward. It was casual but she had other things planned for the night. She was interested in some firearms for her and her the guards in her asylum. Thankfully, the traffickers were human. They were too cocky for their own good thinking they can blast anyone if their weapons. 

Even Lorna understood the weapons won’t solve their problems but it would keep more lunatics at bay. Now that NOVA was done for she was on edge. Lorna lived her life being tormented for being a mutant. The last thing she would believe in is peace and hope. She was bunkering down before shit hit the fan. Lorna was waiting for the men to pull up when she spotted Rick out of the corner of her eye. “What you got nothing better to do with your free time?” She asked letting her head hang in defeat. She didn’t want to deal with Rick when it was an otherwise in and out situation. “You’re a pain in the ass, you know that right?”

the air was cold around her, but she liked it. the feeling of almost being too cold to be outside on the rooftops. felicia found it better to think out here, rather than in her fairly posh apartment. got her back to her roots. a smile crossed her lips as she moved to sit on the edge of the rooftop ; legs dangling off the edge, to a normal person, this would be insane. but she had been doing this for most of her life at this point, it came natural.

a pause of her thinking as she moved to glance over her shoulder, moving her white hair out of the way ; blinking slightly. not many people could sneak up on her & she wouldn’t notice. she was impressed. “ — its rude to sneak up on someone like that, y’know, could get you hurt. ”

Lorna liked running along the rooftops of Star City. With so many mutants and metahumans it was easy to run across someone. Mostly, she kept to herself. The parkour was her way of letting go of frustrations. The next best thing were junkyards. The endless amounts of metal she used to fashion into spikes and drive them through seemingly impenetrable walls was calming. She liked to mix destruction with serenity. It was a balance that worked well to keeping her sane. 

She spotted the woman sitting on the edge of the rooftop. Lorna didn’t know who the girl was at first. Her first thought it was another misplaced villain or some angsty teen looking for a way out. Either way the latter had her curious to meet the unknown face. Lorna sat down beside the female giving her a once over. “At least the pain would make things fun.” She teased. “Though I’m never one to say no to a fight. I’m Lorna, and you?”

“Why are you staring at me in such a manner? This happens to be the most comfortable attire that I have access to. The fibers are perfectly breathable and the form-fitting cling keeps the suit from shifting unnecessarily.” Noh remarked to a group of ogling young teens. One young man in particular seemed to have a terrible relationship between his eyes and gravity - his gaze continuing to fall along Noh’s figure each time he tried to raise it back up.

“It’s just… revealing.” One young woman remarked. “Yeah, most people try to cover themselves up a little better. It’s like you’re running around in that athletic spandex or something.” Another remarked shortly after.

“Yes, I am well aware that you people tend to be far more conservative in your appearance - hiding your bodies as if revealing them would be some sort of shame; and subsequently shaming those among you that are accepting of the fact that their bodies are attractive, but refuse to let that dictate their choice of appearance.” Noh-Varr fired back. “This suit is combat-tested and standard issue for a Kree warrior. There is nothing wrong with it.” He remarked, watching as the group whispered among themselves and shuffled along their way. 

The snow-haired man watched them go for a few moments before looking down at himself - the sharp black and white of the almost reflective material catching the sunlight and its striking green lines. “This is fine.” He mumbled. Besides, he had practically nothing when it came to the paper currency used in these ‘United States’. He had a few outfits he had acquired over the years with his team, but they had developed some wear and tear in some spots and were not as comfortable as his combat suit most days.

Lorna was thankful for the recent shipment of supplies. She had converted an old asylum into a hideaway for displaced mutants and metahumans. It wasn’t ideal but it was what they can do for the time being. The asylum was on the outskirts of town because people were always afraid of the things they do not understand. Before it was mental health, varying sexual identities, and the color of one skin. Now it was based on their powers, another thing they couldn’t change. They were lucky that their powers gave them the ability to help one another rather than being picked away by the vultures. 

She watched the crowd of kids and teenagers looking at Noh like he was some object. Lorna never cared for the superhero get-up. It was added layers that made them stick out like a sore thumb. It wasn’t the clothes that made the hero it was what they did. Still his suit was catching everyone’s eye. Eventually, she made her way over smacking the dirt off on her black skinny jeans. “Alright, alright. It’s not like we all don’t that dicks and vags are thing. Now leave him alone. He’ll talk to you guys later.” Lorna told them trying to disperse the crowd. 

“And maybe you can get a suit just like him, twerp, not get moving.” She ruffled one of the teenage boys head before pushing them along. Lorna raised a brow, “When I said a motivational talk to inspire them I didn’t mean into sex workers.” She joked tucking her hands into the back pockets of her jeans. “But this works. Thanks for coming out. I think they can really use this.”
