Sat down with my bud @peteradamyan to talk about his newest solo show āFirst World Cargo Cultā, on view all December long at @spoke_art SF. A biting satire with incredible depth and beauty - very stoked to dig into this one! . This collection was inspired by the ācargo cultsā that first arose in the Pacific Islands of Melanesia after contact with WWII allied military. āFirst World Cargo Cultā examines the burden of consumerism and mass production through an unflinching lens of colonialism, indigenous spirituality, and environmental decay. Adamyanās consumerist satire ridicules the selfishness, greed, and corruption of Man and he turns his back on Mother Nature. A new-age forager integrating scrap materials, wood mosaics, wilderness landscapes, and tribal garb, Adamyan shows a deep reverence for nature, ecological preservation, and all the original BIPOC stewards of the land. . Always one step ahead, Adamyan invites viewers in and offers them a joke... as a trap. In recognizing the material iconography, in laughing at the punchline, viewers admit their role in the very same System on trial. As Adamyan ridicules the descent of humanity, viewers have no choice but to reflect on their own cog in the self-destructive Machine. We confess that we have but the hand that feeds us, and weāll bite it again (for the *alternative* āstandard 7-10 day shippingā transcends any earthly pain imaginable.) So in a way, to appreciate Adamyanās work is to admit defeat. And with āFWCCā he has bested us yet again. .
