Demystifying DGD

We really need to have a discussion as to why we can’t access healthcare: most people with DGD are people of color, and a significant portion of us are also women. We get overlooked in the job market normally, but the emblem is always the final nail in the coffin. It’s why white people with DGD can rise to popularity despite not even attempting to manage their symptoms, meanwhile people like Alan are vilified because someone recorded him crying after dropping a milkshake. 

We are being purposefully kept in poverty, which, in turn, keeps us from obtaining life-saving services. 

They want us to die.

Don’t let them kill us.

I went through the same exact thing. This might be hard to hear, but people will reject you for being what you are, will avoid you because they don’t want to become attached to someone who they think will leave. Maybe they’ll even think that you’re violent towards others because of stereotypes created by the horror industry, by movies like Splat. But you are stronger than they give you credit for. The first thing you need is a support group. Parents, aunts, cousins, a Dilg facility that has an open-access program, friends-- whatever and whoever you can get. Because they will catch you when you falter and hold you when the world gets too cruel, and you will need that. The second thing is a fixation; we do well when we have things to turn our attention away from the pain of our bodies and the harshness we direct towards ourselves. I like the sciences, I like things that are straightforward that I can take apart. My work-wife Yasmine likes working with clay, something about having a tangible product as the results of her labor makes her feel good. You have to find what works for you and own it. Stick to a Dilg diet, whenever possible, the commercial ones lack a lot of vitamins the human body needs which, as you can imagine, makes all of our symptoms worse.

omggggg this is so sad 😢 You are so strong and so brave. I recently watched the Fault in Our Hearts which really made me open my eyes to how horrible it is to live with DGD. You guys are all so inspirational. I'm rooting for you. Thoughts and prayers 🌈

We are more than just inspiration and pity porn for you to gawk at. Why not try actually talking to people with DGD instead of just watching cringy movies that completely misrepresent us? Oh, wait, that would require braincells. Sorry for expecting the bare minimum of decency from a braindead dolt like you.

Sorry, y’all. I try not to get made on here because this is supposed to be a safe space for us, but I get thousands of asks like this a day and I finally just snapped. I cried for a few hours after, actually, but then Alan got me ice cream and made me tea and made me a really nice bath and lit candles and I cried in his arms, which felt a lot better than crying on my lonesome. He really is the light of my life, and also probably about half of my impulse control, tbh.

My parents keep telling me that people with DGD can't maintain long-term relationships. I'm afraid that all of my friendships are doomed to fail and that the effort isn't worth it. Is it true? Am I going to be alone forever?

Oh, honey, I was told the same thing. And it's not true. Full stop. My beautiful husband-- who has been my husband for ten years going, now-- doesn't have a tumblr, nor do any of my wonderful friends, ht we DO have facebooks and we regularly meet up in person. I lived in a dorm with 5 other people who had DGD in college, but sure, we’re inherently violent. This reads like all of the bigoted rhetoric that those who preach eugenics spit at us.

And really? Just say that you hate disabled-- sorry-- “those with pre-existing conditions”-- and go. You won’t cover the costs of living at a facility, but you’ll charge us four times as much to stay at an “AHIP approved” facility. You won’t cover the cost of actually helping the DGD community, but you’ll approve autism “cures” and allow insurances to condone the literal poisoning of thousands of vulnerable people.

We have to be on guard at all times for policies dressed up in nice words. Look for the dogwhistle terms!!!!
