“don’t eat honey because it exploits the bees and they can’t consent!!!” bees are literally unionized and will walk out if they don’t like being in the beekeeper’s hives
It's true.
I worked with a beekeeper (not at beekeeping, guy had a day job as a machinist and kept bees as a side thing). One day there was a swarm in the parking lot and people were freaking out because, y'know, BEES EVERYWHERE. Beekeeper guy went to his truck. Pulled a swarm-catching box out. Put it on the ground and walked away. Bees went in the box after a while. Guy put the box back in his truck and drove home with them.
You cannot prevent bees from leaving a hive they don't like the conditions of, without also preventing them from being able to make honey. The latter is dependent on them being able to come and go as they please. If they don't like their hive THEY WILL LEAVE.
Beekeeping is probably the single most non-exploitative animal agriculture in the entirety of human history. I don't know how it's even possible to exploit bees. They answer only to their queen.
They absolutely do not answer to the queen. If she sucks they will kill her and make a new one.
dude seeing these Mega high quality images of the surface of mars that we now have has me fucked up. Like. Mars is a place. mars is a real actual place where one could hypothetically stand. It is a physical place in the universe. ITS JUST OUT THERE LOOKING LIKE UH IDK A REGULAR OLD DESERT WITH LOTS OF ROCKS BUT ITS A WHOLE OTHER PLANET?
LIKE THIS JUST LOOKS LIKE IT COULD BE A PERSON’S BACKYARD. LIKE YEA A LITTLE DUSTY MAYBE THERE WAS A SANDSTORM BUT THAT’S COOL I’M JUST GONNA WALK DOWN TO THE STORE P S Y C H YOU’RE ON MARS BICH!
i hate to be rude and intrude on this post but we have decent pictures of the surface Venus too!
#venus has a low render distance
See also below Saturn’s moon, Titan. Mars has a blue horizon at sunset so it looks even more Earth-like in this image:

Also: Comet 67P/Churyumov–Gerasimenko
So it’s not quite snowing on Churyumov–Gerasimenko, unfortunately; the white specks are artifacts of cosmic rays impinging on the CCDs in the camera, as well as a rotating starfield in the background (since the comet is spinning). A few specks could be dust. But, holy shit, that’s the surface of a comet. That’s a spot you could in theory cling to for dear life sit down on. The Cliffs of Comet 76p are a place.
If that isn’t the neatest shit I don’t know what is.
Every Tumblr update is just "here's something incredibly stupid the site management has done" and then ten minutes later followed by "here are seventeen extremely simple workarounds because staff can't even fuck up properly"
take it.

i learned about Tim Wong who successfully and singlehandedly repopulated the rare California Pipevine Swallowtail butterfly in San Francisco. In the past few years, he’s cultivated more than 200 pipevine plants (their only food source) and gives thousands of caterpillars to his local Botanical Garden (x)
A recent study by Resia Pretorius and her team at Stellenbosch University in South Africa suggests that long COVID may be triggered by microclots.
A scientist in South Africa believes she and her colleagues have found a critical clue in solving the mystery of long COVID: microclots.
“A recent study in my lab revealed that there is significant microclot formation in the blood of both acute COVID-19 and long COVID patients,” Resia Pretorius, head of the science department at Stellenbosch University in South Africa, wrote Wednesday in an op-ed.
Pretorius writes that healthy bodies are typically able to efficiently break down blood clots through a process called fibrinolysis. But, when looking at blood from long COVID patients, “persistent microclots are resistant to the body’s own fibrinolytic processes.”
Pretorius’ team in an analysis over the summer found high levels of inflammatory molecules “trapped” in the persistent microclots observed in long COVID patients, which may be preventing the breakdown of clots.
Because of that, cells in the body’s tissues may not be getting enough oxygen to sustain regular bodily functions, a condition known as cellular hypoxia.
“Widespread hypoxia may be central to the numerous reported debilitating symptoms” of long COVID, Pretorius writes.
As many as 100 million people globally have or have had long COVID, according to a study by researchers at the University of Michigan in November.
A patient is diagnosed with long COVID when the effects of a COVID-19 infection persist for more than four weeks, according to the Mayo Clinic. While older people and people with serious medical conditions are the most likely to experience long COVID, many young and healthy people have reported feeling unwell for weeks or even months after their initial COVID-19 diagnosis.
Symptoms of long COVID vary between cases, but primarily include fatigue, brain fog, muscle or joint pain, shortness of breath, sleep difficulties, and depression or anxiety.
The Department of Health and Human Services in June released new guidance in which some symptoms of long COVID could qualify as a disability under the Americans with Disabilities Act.
In December, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission issued an update to its own guidance, which now considers an individual who has contracted COVID-19 disabled if any of their symptoms “substantially limits one or more major life activities.”
Oh, this is fascinating! So much good could come from this.
@thebibliosphere have you seen this?
I read about it briefly on Twitter! It’d be fantastic news if this turns out to be the case. It also makes me wonder if this is also applicable to other forms of post-viral illnesses, or if it opens up the gateway for more research. Here’s hoping!
This person is so lovely and looking for help. Even if you can't donate, if you could share this post it would be amazing.

seems that Chrome has around 60-65% market share, so it’s not totally dominating the market yet but it’s worrying that we’re basically reliant on Apple and Microsoft to hold the line.
Does Firefox not count for anything?
about 10% and falling, but perhaps that can change, I just don’t see how.
Chrome edging towards 70% on desktop, Microsoft has thrown in the towel, Safari obviously rules iOS, Firefox exists only as insurance for Chrome.
Please, please I’m begging you, use firefox.
PLEASE install firefox as a mobile browser and then run adblock on your mobile browser it’s so good I promise.
Look.
Look.
I know I’m a total grind about open source stuff but browsers are the PERFECT place to learn to love open source software and for so long FireFox was a major part of the browser market and sometimes if you want to see what kind of fuckery google is up to it helps to see the kinds of things they block in firefox and just
There’s an organization that makes free, excellent, safe software that doesn’t collect and market your data but for some reason two thirds of the world uses a google product and most of the leftover population uses apple and just
I promise, firefox is so good - the extensions are incredible look - I can use lightbeam to see what sites I use and how they connect to other sites (bottom right should give you an idea how much time I spend on tumblr)
or I can look at ublock origin and see that it’s blocked over 2 million requests since I installed it or I can run the facebook container extension and stop facebook from tracking me and you know what I bet you can do a lot of that on chrome too but you’re doing that while chrome itself is tracking you and gobbling up your activity for google and
firefox is so fuckin great and it’s such a great ambassador for other open source projects please be a big old fuckin nerd with me and use firefox and run a bunch of funky extensions and customize the fuck out of your web experience.

omg if baby oil dissolves condoms what the fuck does it do to babies???
This may be shocking, but babies and condoms are made of different material
it’s like rock paper scissors: baby oil defeats condom, baby defeats baby oil, condom defeats baby
absolutely fucking in love with this tweet.
frothing at the mouth over the sheer number of undeclared allergens in both prescription and otc meds
ID: screenshot of tags via @deathcallsmedaddy reading "#but how do you feel about it #on a scale of one to ten #how bad is the frothing?" End ID.
we are at a fucking 12/10
"Worryingly, they discovered that 93 percent of medications contain allergens, including lactose, dyes, and peanut oil. Almost all medicines contain ingredients that some people might not be able to tolerate, such as gluten."
and medications have none of the same requirements to label allergens as foods, and supplements don't even need to be truthful about their content. im currently having to go through and throw out/replace my medications bc I recently had an allergy escalate to "potentially deadly" and am now finding that process was helped by the fucking thing being hidden in half my fucking medications
so yeah for anyone with moderate to severe allergies, check ALL the meds you take, especially if you're reacting and don't know why.
this is one of those "reblog to actually save a life" things i think
This @thebibliosphere’s life on this marvelous planet we call home
I’m allergic to the dyes the put into antihistamines. We found out one time in the ER when a nurse gave me the pink version of the tablet and my allergic reaction progressed from “probably going away but let’s just be sure” to anaphylaxis.
Same with epi-pens. I’m allergic to the preservatives used to keep epinephrine stable. I still have to use them in the event of anaphylaxis; it just means I’m at higher risk for biphasic anaphylaxis and need to be pumped full of about a bajillion other rescue meds and hope like hell they’re enough.
This is why compounding pharmacies need to be brought up to better standards of regulation than what they currently are and also become standard imo. The need the customize medications to better care for allergen risks is desperate.
