Something was wrong, in all honestly. Something was very, very wrong. Yuto was practically on the verge of having boiling blood running through his veins as he stood on the battlefield, arguing with Ruri. There was an unsettling feeling that had pooled and sat patiently in his gut that always flooded in when he had fought with her like this…
But he pushed it aside. Again. Leaving it ignored for the umpteenth time, but against his rage, his could he not? Heartland had been overrun. Ruined. Torn into a wasteland of rubble and fire as the invaders from Duel Academy ruined their home…
And something… something about the fire just fanned the flames of his anger, leaving him a growling, snarling mess every time someone fell. He wanted to fight back. Take his home back. Reclaim what was his.
Make them pay. Make them suffer. Give them what they deserved. Give them what they wanted—
— but. Ruri stood in his way. All he did was steal one of the tiny devices that allowed them to card other people to where he could make them suffer like they had made others suffer… but Ruri wasn’t having it. He wasn’t being allowed to install it, and was being given a mouthful the instant he took it.
His face was scrunched up in his anger as he simply stared at her with glaring eyes, as she continued to shout and cry about how dueling wasn’t meant for this and about his choices in this war as the device was still within his grasp, and his boot was still on the chest of the fallen Academy Warrior — bested by his dragon.
… Something about how duels weren’t meant to harm others eased his heart yet put his stomach in knots as the substance within his gut twisted and turned with her words. Yet… there were whispers of doubt in his mind… If dueling wasn’t to harm others, then why was it possible to do so?
Why was it so easily… dangerously… deliciously possible to do so? The temptation was too great in the wake of his blood running hot through his veins, yet… the one person he cared the most in this war was tired of being on opposing sides with him. An ice dagger against the heat of rage that leads the purple-haired boy to fall silent, gray eyes rolling to the side as he sighed and looked away.
She was right. She was right in how they should have been supporting one another, holding each other’s hands against the fire and being back to back with every duel. That’s how this resistance was meant to work. Was meant to fight for this dimension. At least… in a perfect world. A sigh left him, at memories of Kaito, and his dark cries of repentance. And his memories of Shun, and how he went from being one of their most analytical and strategic, to running off and even carding those he was up against. Sometimes he calmed down, but it was few and far between. Yuto was easily convinced — this wasn’t cuddle time. This was war.
… And so, Ruri’s words fell on deaf ears, as an angered face covered by a mask gave her his thoughts back.
“You say we should support each other… then why aren’t you supporting me in wanting to fight back?”
This wasn’t the first time Ruri had witnessed Yuto’s anger during the war, but even she could unfortunately admit that this was the worst of it she had ever seen. They had never clashed this bad before and it scared her. She never wanted to fight with him, especially like this.
But what was she supposed to do? Clearly Yuto had already made up his mind.
“You say we should support each other… then why aren’t you supporting me in wanting to fight back?”
“Because you’re better than this, Yuto…!” Ruri cried out, taking a few steps towards him as she tried to keep the carding device away from here. “Sinking to their level… becoming just as bad as them… is that really what you want…?!”
A horrid thought crossed her mind the moment those words left her lips and it was enough to shatter her heart into tiny little pieces. Ruri knew what it would mean for them if Yuto continued this path – if he dared to follow the footsteps of those who had lost their own moral compass.
She never wanted to ask of this from him, but he had left her no choice.
“Yuto… I’ve always done my best to support you in anything you do.” Ruri’s voice fell to a hesitant whisper as she slowly backed off to give him access to the device he had been longing for. It was hard to keep her hands from trembling as they clenched into fists, but she did her best to stay strong – to stay firm against her beliefs…
... Beliefs that Yuto once shared long ago.
“I care for you more than anything, but this… this is where I draw the line. I–… If you do this, then you are throwing away everything that we stood for – everything that we’ve tried to fight for to bring peace instead of war... and that means throwing away whatever is left of us.”
There was a tiny crack in her voice, but in that moment Ruri didn’t care. It broke her to say these words to someone she held such passionate feelings and great respect for, but this wasn’t the same Yuto she fell in love with.
She had no idea who he was anymore.
“... The choice is yours, Yuto.”
