Star Trek: Starfleet Academy 01x10 - "Rubincon"

Contrary to a lot of what I'm seeing on this website recently, Paramount canceling Starfleet Academy does not mean you should stop, or feel discouraged, about writing fanfiction for it.

If anything, them canceling the show means you should write more fanfiction. This show only truly dies off it we allow it to happen. It sucks that there won't be any more than twenty episodes (and five(?) comics) of source material, but that doesn't mean we can't keep creating for it. Fanfiction is literally endless, canon is only something to be built upon.

Paramount gave up the show- that means it's ours now.

Who says we can't have a third season? That we can't see these cadets graduate? Write a fanfic about it- whether it be 1000 words or 1,000,000. Draw fanart of it.

There's so many talented artists and writers in this fandom- even though it's a small one. More than the show getting cancelled, it'll kill me to see so many people leave it behind. Keep creating, Starfleet Academy lives and dies with the fans, with us.

What a day… Early workout, classes, calica practice, homework, extra night class, studying, hot yoga before bed…

I love all the stuff I do. But sometimes I wish I had a few extra minutes to hang at lunch with my friends or chat before bed with Sam. What I do now matters for the future, but does it matter in the present?

Class is dismissed at STAR TREK: STARFLEET ACADEMY, as the series will officially end after next year’s second season

Disappointed but not surprised sadly… hopefully season 2 is decent and ends ok!! And if not… that’s what fanfic is for? 🤷🏻‍♀️

I’ve been thinking about adding hot yoga to my routine every other day - last thing before I have to sleep for the night. I figure I might as well take advantage of the time where we have to sleep, and it will allow my muscles to stretch and recover?

Then, I’m basically already warmed up for agility days. Work hard, play hard!?

Genesis is an admiral’s kid but her dad had a ship at some point (she says she sat in his captain’s chair) and if she grew up on a generational vessel like the Enterprises D through J then that informing her interactions with her peers would be an interesting direction to take things I think.

I could see a flashback where a very long Genesis got in trouble at school and when he reprimanded her, he said something to the effect of “when you are on this ship, you represent not only yourself, but me, the captain’s authority would be completely undermined if the crew thought I couldn’t discipline my own daughter!” And that stuck with her heavily so she became what he wanted: a miniature Captain to the ship’s children. First to the kids her age “I’m the captain’s daughter so I should go first!” Or something like that), but, as she grew up, she began to see the ship’s brat compliment as her responsibility as the captain’s brat because she “represents her father” and so she naturally gravitated to this “I have to be the moral authority to the kids on this ship” idea, and now she’ll have to realize that she doesn’t have that moral responsibility or authority anymore.

It would be especially interesting to see that strain her relationship to SAM because she wants to protect her friend but also still thinks of her as naïve and SAM as a charge rather than a peer. SAM is desperate to have her friends see her as the new SAM despite the fact that to them, only a month has past and she acting like they don’t know her (they don’t but they think they do. That version of her is either dead or compartmentalized)

I’d especially love it if SAM starts mentioning other holograms that were going through their childhoods the same time she was (the Makers did say that literally everyone on the planet gets a childhood besides SAM) and having peers to compare to Genesis to see that she’s unwittingly always making herself the leader and moral authority, the port in the storm, the captain in every social interaction and this triggers a realization that Genesis herself was, in her own way, also denied a childhood the way SAM was

Being parentified - it takes a toll on a kid

(Or, another reason I relate to this character)

Genesis was 100% told that she represented her father, everywhere she went. I know this because one of my parents was a teacher at my school, and I was told that exact same thing. Every action I took, I had to think about these implications that a child shouldn’t have had to think of.

So do I think Genesis was possibly blamed for things that weren’t her fault or in her control? Yes. Do I think that from that moment at a young age, she started thinking with the mind of someone far older, but with the emotional regulation of a child? Yes.

I think that causes a lot of stress and worry on a child. I think it makes someone become very unsure of themselves as they enter adulthood. They don’t know what they’re supposed to do. They feel lazy, or stuck, because there’s not a job to be done where everything you say and do needs to be anticipated and thought through.

Genesis isn’t even at the point where she realizes why she feels unsure of herself. She just knows she does. She’s still young and is away from her father’s shadow for the first time. She’s trying to assimilate her new reality to what she knows, which is her leading/taking care of her peers, hence what Sam says to her in the last episode.

It will take Genesis time to be able to accept that she doesn’t need to have all the answers, and it will be very hard for her to figure out for herself what she truly wants. She’s been living in a shadow. Sam was living in a shadow, but now also has context for undeniable love, so she can allow herself to take more risks in life and with her friendships and relationships. Genesis isn’t quite there yet.
