Why do you think people can consume a story about breaking the status quo and addressing structural issues, but be so passive and conformist in real life. This franchise is so popular yet no one seems inspired to do something or even addresses the structural issues in real life and the need to break the status quo?

I mean, I'm not here to look down on the majority of people just trying to get by. I have a few thoughts.

One, precisely because the series is so popular, there are going to be a lot of readers who don't share the author's politics. Other people are going to take very different messages away - what else was the show's putting the line "most girls are idiots" in Arya's mouth? Weak as I think the argument is, I've also seen arguments that the story is a metaphor for anti-immigrant politics. It's not an easy or a pleasant thing to read a story you enjoy, a story you can see is well-written and perceptive about human nature, have strong feelings about the characters and their struggles... and realise that if you were a character in it, you'd be Bowen Marsh but less good at maths. I understand why someone would recoil away from that insight.

Some people, of course, are just here for the dragons.

Two, most of us are the smallfolk. We don't have dragons. We're not going to be parachuted into leadership positions because of daddy's surname. Most of us are not going to be the right person in the right place in the right time to put our thumbs on the scales of history. We are the people in the crowd listening to the High Sparrow, the farmers who plead Eddard Stark for protection from the Iron Throne, the innkeepers who point a crossbow at Jaime and Brienne, the faceless and nameless people displaced for wars not our own.

ASoIaF is not about the struggles of these people. People like us. ASoIaF is different to a lot of works in the genre in that it acknowledges those struggles are there and real, that collective action is meaningful and powerful, and contains a few examples of smallfolk changing the course of events - but it's just not about the 99.99%. It's about the high nobility.

So most of us are going to have to do a bit of translating the morals of the story in a way that fits our own lives. Like the nameless smallfolk of ASoIaF, we live in a world where despair and exhaustion are useful tools of the ruling elite. We all have to get by somehow or another, and the series is also realistic that there are risks to standing up and risks in being openly different. It is difficult to do the right thing, and you are not going to be able to do the best thing all the time, every time. It will take its toll on you and the people around you.

That's part of the story too, after all: people are people. Even people trying their best to do good make mistakes, end up in situations where there is no good choice, or burn out. It's something the series treats with compassion. Trying is what matters when you're up against a structure far more powerful than you.

For most of us, then, taking the moral of the story is mostly going to mean small acts of compassion, small acts of courage, helping out where and when and how we can, changing small things within our power, and enduring the inevitable setbacks and pushback.

I do believe that small acts add up over time, even if that time is decades.
