The wolf’s lonely melody sinks amidst the hymns.

A follow-up piece to Lamb of God about my experience growing up in a Christian boarding school. We were required to attend chapel every Thursday in the middle of the school day and Sunday mornings, including students that did not follow the Christian faith. We were also required to sign up to go to local churches once every month for Sunday chapel instead of the chapel on campus. Being black and living in the deep south, it always made me feel incredibly uncomfortable to attend the local churches.

The idea of blind faith comes to mind because we had students who simply followed what they were being told to do due the requirements of the school. However, there was constant outcry about the lack of an alternative space for students and faculty of different faiths or beliefs that were never addressed. This was especially concerning as many students, faculty, and staff were from other countries. The school prided itself on being a cultural melting pot, yet only took some small steps to celebrate those cultures (maybe one or two student-run yearly festivals). Most of the time it was heavily saturated with Christian faith and values. I have no ill-feelings toward Christianity but looking back upon how it made me feel to be in those spaces still bothers me to this day. The time I spent in those chapels and churches were the reason I became disillusioned with Christianity.  

Use of Symbolism:

The number of animals represents the 12 Disciples. 11 Sheep & the Wolf.

The Wolf is a reference to Judas Iscariot, the disciple that betrayed Jesus.

The lack of detail down the middle of the sheep and on the ears to imply the Cross. It also created a grid or cage to invoke the feeling of being trapped.

The Wolf smiles tight to the point of bleeding, representing my own discomfort and an allusion to ‘the kiss’.

The composition is done in rows to imply people sitting in pews of a chapel.
