Sometimes I become aware that my life is the sidekick character's background C plot in a mid 2000s show.

I show up to coffee with a friend. She tells me about a guy who slept with her because his girlfriend cheated on him so he gets a freebie, and my friend didn't find out until afterward. She feels betrayed. I express sympathy. This is the A plot of her life and is standard fare for prime time.

She asks me where I was this weekend, because she tried to call me and it went straight to voicemail.

I was in the woods, I explain, at a sword fighting tournament. I came in third and got a couple fingers broken, but it's fine. I wrapped them. The politics of our sub-regional sword fighting community are getting pretty complicated, since the guy everyone likes committed nonprofit fraud and the guy no one likes is vice-bursar and takes over if he goes to jail. Is she going to do anything about the guy who sort of cheated on his girlfriend with her? Is it cheating? This woman we don't know knew about it and approved under the circumstances presented.

Conversation turns to the philosophy of dating and betrayal. The B plot reveals itself to be that our mutual friend is back with her on again, off again boyfriend, and the conflict of how much we have to pretend to like him when she's going to dump him again in 2-5 days, like always. It's threaded through the episode.

The C plot is threaded through the season and comes back again when an unexpectedly attractive man turns out to be my friend from sword fighting, who I briefly dated but stopped when it turned out he only fought rapier and never learned buckler or longsword, which is clearly unfuckable behavior. That's the B flat plot of a single episode. The other characters are concerned with the fact that there's a man with cheekbones like that out in the woods getting his fingers broken. I don't understand the concern, because again, he only fights rapier. How is he going to break a finger doing that?

It comes up again when I break a mugger's arm with an umbrella, and one more time when I'm acquitted for breaking a muggers arm because the judge didn't believe I could.

I join the rest of the cast for drinks afterwards and talk about work and dating. Someone asks how the sword politics are going. I take a shot and tell them everyone forgot about the nonprofit fraud because the guy no one likes robbed a corner store and is in the hospital with multiple stab wounds. Turns out the cashier at the corner store is a local knife fighting champion.

Solidarity with Children

this book is out now!!! it's a short read, less than 200 pages, and it's SO good. i literally had to pause halfway through just to send the author a message about how much i liked it. definitely leans more utopian than scientific, but that makes sense given the format, and i think it has a lot of good things to say.

once you really start thinking about how restrictive the world is for children and how many bullshit justifications we retroactively come up for it all the time, you can't stop seeing it everywhere. this book makes a good case for including children in our political efforts not as rhetorical devices but as an actual class of oppressed people.
