part of what makes the big lebowski cool is that it's doing a send up of noir detective movies with a deeply unserious person (the dude) which is funny on its face

but also by putting the dude in that role and having echoes of all the 'masculine' traits of the humphrey bogart types it kind of paints those masculine traits as also being deeply unserious

the dude drinks white russians all day. It's funny because it's a kind of funny drink. but it also contrasts the private eye hip flask. The bourbons and ryes. He's buffoonish

but then you think. What's the difference? Why is it masculine and cool when the other guys do it. and the answer is it's not. they're all buffoons. masculinity is a clown's performance
