Being a researcher at Parker
I wanted to share with you my daily routine and also my experience of being research intern at Parker. I have to say that being a researcher is not an easy job as many others. It is very challenging, but at the same time it is very interesting and fascinating. Last couple of weeks I took a part in various meetings and interesting discussions coupled with a lot of readings related to my ongoing systematic review. Usually my week starts with department meeting where we discuss our achievements during the week with a delicious breakfast. On Tuesday, we usually have a presentation meeting with representatives of different units where we have various presentations on different research topics. On Friday, I attend another meeting where different unit representatives gather together with some breakfast to discuss and share informations with each other. Afterall, the rest of the week I am very busy with my ongoing systematic review. After spending a while at Parker I came to know many interesting people and also obtained knowledge from really knowledgable and intelligent people about different nutrition related topics from different perspectives. This was very inspiring to me...
My internship at the Parker Institute!

It has been a while now since I started my second internship at The Parker Institute (http://www.parkerinst.dk/staff/berit-l-heitmann), particularly at the department of Public Health. Last few weeks I was very busy with the systematic review that I am carrying on. I am investigating the influence of vitamin d in early life and the risk of multiple sclerosis (MS) in adulthood. I believe that not everyone familiar with multiple sclerosis. So let me give a brief introduction...
Multiple sclerosis is a chronic demyelinating disease that affects the Central Nervous System. It is one of the most common neurological disorders occurring in young and middle-aged adults. It has significant impact on people’s quality of life and has huge financial implications. Unfortunately, scientists are still not sure about etiology of multiple sclerosis and research results are inconsistent. I hope with the current systematic review that I started together with my supervisor Berit Heitmann, I would be able to gather existing evidence on impact of vitamin d in early life critically read, evaluate and potentially contribute for the development of additional knowledge and inspirations for the further investigations.
To the best of my knowledge, this is the first systematic review investigating role of vitamin d in early life and risk of MS.
I am planning to register my study protocol with the journal soon! Will keep you updated…

Challenges part 2: Office Work and Photo Diaries
I love logging onto tumblr on my computer or iphone to discover new posts and pictures from my peers. It’s evident how the programme enables accomplishments of hugely different internship both in Denmark and abroad. I’ve enjoyed diving into experiences from all over the world; Swaziland, Belize, the international school in Hellerup, Portugal, the MOH in Zambia, Nepal, a Danish research institute, a resort in Thailand - the list could go on. Obviously, some internship are most picturesque than others. The photos from the more exotic places are almost a story in themselves. Thus, continuing my reflections on challenges pertaining to my internship at Statens Serum Institut, one of them have been to make my blog and its appearance appealing and interesting. Photos, video clips and audio files are perhaps not the best or easiest ways to reflect on my intern experience for several reasons. I’d argue there’s a limit to how intriguing pictures of an office desk or a computer screen can be. In the long run anyway. Furthermore, one does not just go about taking pictures at a facility like SSI. Because of huge amounts of personal data about Danish citizens, costly studies and server security, it was not appropriate for me to look too much like a tourist - flashing my camera or giving people any reason to think I could in some way be a security breach… 😉 I’ve tried to describe the two monts both during and after in a personal voice that I hope have reflected my thoughts and experiences - even without an abundance of colourful pictures. Thus, although not pertaining directly to my work at SSI, I think one of the challenges since the beginning of the internship have been to post the ten blog entries on the ten FIPI topics. The challenging part was not the number of entries - I passed that point a while ago, I believe - it was fitting the FIPI topics into my internship at SSI. I’m not saying it wasn’t doable; it was just a concern of mine to act appropriately at SSI and with respect to the information I shared in a public forum on the internet, fulfil the official internship and blog requirements, and to keep the blog interesting for my peers. Nevertheless, I’m so glad I have this blog to retell my experience and as a reminder of a great part of my bachelors at GNH 😊

5 Top tips from former intern to the future!
Plan everything beforehand: It is very important to have ready beforehand your CV and cover letter, especially it concerns more non-EU students wishing to perform internship in EU country. It is not easy as it may seem to find an internship, therefore, you will only benefit if you start early and will have different choices to choose from.
Know well about internship place: Investigate carefully the place that you would like to apply in order to express your understanding of their job in your cover letter and in the interview that they might wish to arrange with you.
Don't be afraid to experience new things: If you like an internship place but the job they offer will seem difficult or unachievable to you, never be afraid of experiencing new things. For example, in my case working on the research independently meaning with remote supervision seemed very much difficult in the beginning but I really wanted to TRY and now I am so much happy for that.
Be ready for plenty of formal communications: If you choose such research center as Statens Serum Institut expect having a lot of formal communications not only with your supervisor but also in the meetings with other employee.
This place is right for you if you like to work INDEPENDENTLY, THINKING CRITICALLY and BEING CREATIVE. I found that you need to be ready especially for these three key elements mentioned above.

Faced challenges and gained competence!
First of all, it is important to mention that due to these challenges that I faced, I enhanced my knowledge during the internship. I would like to start from the beginning and take you step by step. In the first weeks,I was working on the research proposal and because I had as one of my objectives "to improve writing skills" I wanted to understand scientific writing concepts. Scientific writing is challenging, especially for non-native English speakers. As I learnt from my supervisor this kind of writing should tell a story and flow from an obvious beginning to the obvious end without leaving things to interpretation. Each sentence and paragraph should guide readers towards the end goal and the language should be specific and precise, unlike literary writing. I am proud that I worked and practiced hard to improve my scientific writing skills. I hope in the future by practicing even more I will be able to communicate my messages effectively and make people interested in what I am writing.
In addition, research process is not just simply collecting data, it includes a lot of reflection, creativity and critical thinking. As I mentioned in one of my posts my research study has not been done yet anywhere and it is the very first study looking on dietary changes across pregnancies. Therefore, very few studies helped me to generate hypotheses and these studies mainly looked on the dietary changes before, after and during pregnancy, but none of them looked on dietary changes across pregnancies. Thus, it took considerable amount of time and was very challenging process to look for previous studies in order to find information on the research question and thereafter formulate a research hypotheses.
The next thing that I would like to mention is statistical hypothesis testing. I think when you don't use statistical tests on a daily basis you tend to forget which test to use in which condition and the same happened with me I had to go back to my notes and refresh my memories quickly. In data analysis procedure I confronted several important issues such as dealing with non-normal data, choosing right test (depending on the type of data continuous, dichotomous or categorical), performing one or two-tailed test, deciding on the critical alpha level to use, just to name few. It was helpful to have some notes and power points from class but in some cases my supervisor also helped me with certain decisions. I found it very important as young researcher to understand concepts of testing procedure in order to make appropriate decisions and conclude accurately final results.
Regarding SAS software I cannot say that it was really challenging maybe only in the very beginning however later it was pretty easy in use. But sometimes it was really frustrating when you think that the code you use is totally correct without noticing a very small mistake, that is why it requires a lot of attention.
Finally, results presentation…as my supervisor said once "If you can do it well, you can be so much more impactful as a researcher, spent time on preparing your presentation. Not everyone is able to present in such way that people remember it". I saved her words in my mind and reminded myself hundred times in the preparation moments. She gave me a lot of tips and devoted her time just to prepare me for this important event. It was very challenging though to present in front of field professionals however I learnt some very useful tips for the future, that I hope will help me.

Internship Achievements
I am almost at the end of the internship and I think it istime to share with you my achievements so far. Before starting my internship journey I with the help of my supervisor created specific objectives that I should achieve until the end of the internship. First of all my supervisor suggested me to choose one project out of three and then by focusing on one build my objectives. As I described earlier in my blog the project that caught my interest is looking in dietary changes across pregnancies. Since I am almost at the end of the internship I would really like to evaluate myself and my learning tasks achievements.
One of my first learning objectives was “To Develop research skills” which I think I successfully accomplished by conducting mini-research and specifically:
· Applied quantitative research methods learnt in Module 3 to examine dietary changes by using existing DNBC (Danish National Birth Cohort).
· Examined and wrote components of research proposal (includes significance and purpose of the study, specific aims, hypothesis, research design and methods)
· Learnt new databases to collect relevant literature for the topic area.
Learning Objectives II: Analyzing data and generating the results.
In order to achieve my learning objectives II I focused on following tasks:
· Used SAS Statistical Software to perform different statistical analysis in order to :
1. Compare the dietary intake of women across two pregnancies with a focus on;
- Protein (animal and plant based)
- Fat (saturated and both mono and polyunsaturated fatty acid)
- Carbohydrates (including dietary fiber)
- Micronutrients
2. Investigate the changes in high risk dietary habits-smoking and caffeine intake, alcohol and beverages.
3. Present correlation between the dietary variables.
4. Investigate the changes in vitamin supplementation.
· Understand generated results, study strength and limitations together with possible policy implications.
Learning Objectives III: Practice professional communication skills.
Key strategies that helped me to achieve my learning objectives III are:
· Participation in weekly department meetings.
· Regular communication with my supervisor via skype, phone, email and personal meeting.
· Practicing scientific writing skills (proposal writing)
Next week I am expected to present study results to the whole department before that I will prepare myself for professional slide composition, audience targeting, body language and taking questions which also adds to my learning objectives III.
P.S: Soon I am planning to interview my supervisor and also post some photos from the presentation of results.
Time is flying...
More than one month has passed and we are done with the most difficult part of our mini research. We devoted last two weeks for the analysis of our results where we used SAS program. However, even though it was tough job to learn SAS programming in two weeks and immediately apply it into practice I am very much happy that I acquired additional statistical skill. Now it's time to work on the results where we will interpret and understand possible policy implications of our study (Dietary changes across pregnancies). Additionally, these two coming weeks we will prepare ourselves for the important day. More specifically the day where we will present our study results to the "Maternal Nutrition Group".
This is our meeting room in SSI where Head of Centre for Fetal Programming Mr Sjurdur F. Olsen holds meeting together with Maternal Nutrition Group and three interns every Monday.

Involvement in research strengthens many of the academic skills!
I am so happy to share with you recent news from my internship. This week is packed with new assignments that are quite challenging so far. As I mentioned in my previous post first two weeks were mainly based on extensive literature review in order to investigate our research question. We have been looking on the importance of dietary intake during pregnancy and dietary intake changes across pregnancies. I was very much interested in this research because it is quite unique and underexplored area and may have implications for how and what dietary advice obstetricians deliver to women entering their first or second/third/… pregnancy.
We used different databases for the literature review such as web of science, pubmed, predimed, American journal of clinical nutrition, American health journal and etc. Finally, after spending considerable amount of time on the literature review we submitted our research proposal and got positive feedback. It is worth to mention that as I worked along the process I have started to improve and enhance my knowledge on the research topic, methods and analysis. Being involved in the research also increased my critical-thinking skills.
From last week we started to familiarize ourselves with SAS (Statistical Analysis System). This included studying questionnaires used to collect data, code books and online descriptions and videos for SAS. SAS is a software used to perform different statistical analysis. In the beginning it was totally complicated since we didn't have any experience before but by practicing it day by day we are getting better in it. However, the most important thing was understanding the data, and coding the data before running any statistical test. In order to understand how and which statistical test to use, we used acquired “module 3” knowledge and applied it into practice. However, it was one of the challenging tasks of this current week.
This week we met our supervisor Ekaterina Maslova. She is frequently reviewing our tasks and providing immediate feedbacks which guide us step by step. On Monday all “Maternal Nutrition Group” had a meeting with a head of the department where he informed everyone about the opportunity of participation in the online symposium which hosted by The Harvard /T.H. Chan School of Public Health on the Scientific Report of the 2015 Dietary Guidelines.
So far I am really enjoying my internship, especially I like the fact that almost every day we are learning something new and also developing our professional communication skills by being involved in the research and participating in the department meetings.

My first two weeks of internship!
I was little nervous on the first week, because entering the new environment can always be challenging however this feeling left me very fast and I enjoyed my first two weeks of internship. In the first week I have been introduced to the people working in "Maternal Nutrition Group" and throughout two weeks we had two meetings where the group discussed their weekly achievements with the head of Center for Fetal Programming, Mr. Sjrudur Olsen. I felt so honored and privileged to have an opportunity to meet field professionals and participate in the meetings where I started to learn from them. From the first day we have been provided with our personal room where we can work for the whole internship period. Unfortunately, we didn't have opportunity to meet our supervisor yet because she is in London and we mainly communicate by skype and emails but workers of SSI are very nice and ready to help us any moment if we are in need. My first two weeks of internship in SSI were very much busy but at the same time inspiring. We mainly worked on writing research plan that is based on "examining dietary changes in women across two pregnancies". One of the main internship objectives is working on this research and deliver it in the form of oral presentation to the "Maternal Nutrition Group". The process of writing a research plan is not an easy thing it requires a lot of time and detailed attention. Luckily, I have strong interest in learning of how to conduct researches so I didn't get bored from a lot of paper work. This experience has opened my eyes even more on the aspects of epidemiology and maternal nutrition. Additionally, our supervisor is very attentive and she really cares about us by providing fast feedbacks on our work. She has become our role model and motivates me to do my best. Everything that I learnt so far will be very much valuable for me and I am looking forward to learn more... P.S: during the whole text I was referring to "we" that's because I am interning with my school friend Prateeksha. We are great team and we really like to work together

How I found my internship place?
"Finding an internship is a very challenging task, especially when you would like to perform your internship in EU country" I have started to prepare all required documents from summer holidays. The reason for such early starting was demanding paper works (such as visa for non EU students). In September I applied to several places but I really wanted to get positive response from SSI. Unfortunately, it took very long time for them to decide, which put me under high pressure. Finally, in November I got positive response and was unbelievably happy for this. By that time, I have already created my internship objectives and contract beforehand. I wanted to intern particularly in the department of Epidemiology research where I am now. I heard about this department before from our external teacher and actually she was the one who inspired me and I believed this was the right place for me. Also the place is very relevant to my specialization because researches are the base for recommendations, policy-making process and interventions, which allows me to practice learnt theories in early modules. Soon I will be sharing with you my internship objectives! Let me also introduce SSI for those who maybe don't know it yet. SSI stands for Statens Serum Institute and is the largest health research center in Denmark. It is public organization working under the Danish Ministry of Health. Collecting and communicating of data concerning the health status of Danish population, insuring national framework and standards for e-health, surveilance and control of infectious disease, research and development, just to mention a few are the major tasks of SSI.
