and if i said wheelclair endgame
hot stranger things 5 take:
byler shippers are contributing to negative rhetoric around male friendships.
i’m not even a hardcore mileven in any regard, but byler never made sense to me on mike’s end. but just because mike shows care and affection towards will, one of his life long friends, that doesn’t mean he’s in love with him.
even if there wasn’t a mileven scene until late into the first episode and their relationship wasn’t central to the season, that doesn’t mean a byler endgame. we don’t need to reestablish that mike and eleven are dating as apart of the status quo at the very opening of every season. plus there are TWO more episode drops that may offer more development in their relationship.
will exploring his queerness in the 1980s is compelling on its own, and he doesn’t need a boyfriend as a happy ending. mike has not gone through that same level of development. unlike vickie, we have had time with mike and if he were queer, we would’ve spent time with him coming to term with being gay like we saw with will. some of the show is told from mike’s perspective, his scenes are not entirely central to will’s character in the way vickie’s are. it wouldn’t be fair to mike as a character if he didn’t get that same time of development as will. robin even gently told him that he was misguided like she once was.
El is Steve, Mike is Tammy, and Will is Robin. It’s the same situation, genderbent.
I’m not even a hater of byler as a concept, but they’re not endgame. it’s okay that mike and will are friends, it’s okay that will reads more into their interactions, mistaking friendship for something more—that’s apart of growing up. it’s okay that will’s feelings will not be reciprocated.
like it’s completely okay to ship byler because ships really never need to be that serious, but i do think the reasoning people keep bringing up as proof of mike’s feelings for will are just examples of mike being a good friend. who wouldn’t check up on their best friend if they were literally being possessed by a supernatural entity and writhing in pain lmao ?? will’s feelings for mike are beyond obvious and robin’s anecdote about the feelings she once had for tammy felt like her way of telling will that he didn’t need to hold onto the person who fist made him realize he was gay and accept that it’s not about the target of your feelings, but just that you HAVE those feelings. anyway i’ll be just as happy as anyone if byler ends up being canon but i think we need to take a step back and consider the implications of saying two guys who are genuine friends must be in love with each other. not to be dramatic but it reinforces the fear a lot of straight men have of being labeled as gay (which is of course rooted in homophobia but that’s the umbrella problem tbh) just for showing emotion and caring for others.
WAS MY MOTHER A RAT
Fancasting The Secret History
sharing my vision of who could play these classics students
i tried to be as realistic as possible, considering their book descriptions and casting actors close in age to each other and their characters. after seeing so many of the same names in these fancasts, i wanted to throw some new ones in the mix!
henry's a big guy, dark-haired, square-jawed, bespectacled — he basically looks like clark kent/superman. so my thought process went to henry cavill look-alike, jamie flatters (b. 2000). coincidentally, my old fancast was david corenswet, so i guess it all checks out. i only know jamie from avatar: the way of water, but based on his music videos, i think he's got the acting chops to capture henry's more unhinged side that he lets slip idk
to me, bunny is the most american out of the group because of his family background, it's even described as "an upbringing vitally present in Bunny in every respect, from the way he shook your hand to the way he told a joke." saw this rudy pankow (b. 1998) casting suggestion on mycast and it just made total sense to me. having watched him as jj maybank in outer banks, i know he can capture how obnoxious bunny can be, and he'll do well trying to annoy every character and pushing their buttons.
admittedly, this was a hard one because i originally had tom glynn-carney in mind but i wanted someone younger, so i didn't go too far and went with ty tennant (b. 2002) who's played the younger version of his characters twice now. i mean if you think about it, aegon ii targaryen and charles have a couple things in common: both are alcoholics and have an incestuous relationship with their sister 😭 since charles and camilla look androgynous and described as angels, i figured ty looks the part. i also believe in ty's acting skills to portray charles' complexity as the story goes on.
i thought of young actresses who resembled ty and went with thomasin mckenzie (b. 2000), who i loved in jojo rabbit and last night in soho. i know thomasin would look good as a blonde, but more importantly, she's got the face for period dramas. camilla is enigmatic, but i think richard just saw her as like an ingénue, so i figured thomasin can do that layered performance.
thought and long hard for who to cast as francis because i'm so tired of seeing the same redhead actors or some random redhead model 😭 thank goodness luther ford (b. 1999/2000) has been discovered. his portrayal in the crown sold me because it was very francis of him to just sit around drinking booze and smoking while dressed in modern princely clothing.
another inspired casting suggestion i saw on mycast — physically, i think dominic sessa (b. 2002) truly fits the bill; i like that he's not your conventionally good-looking guy too. acting-wise, he was incredible in the holdovers. and i believe he could put so much more personality to richard papen's character.
might make a part 2 for other characters like julian morrow and judy poovey :> thanks for checking this out and let me know if you see the vision!
p.s. it's never gonna happen but it'd be interesting to just see this set of actors get together because they seem like a bunch of introverts 😭 they might bond over taking film photos of each other though so that's cool
the amount of lyrical parallels in this album is insane.
“i was a functioning alcoholic until someone noticed my new aesthetic.” she ACTUALLY had champagne problems - fortnight
“i founded the club she’s heard great things about.” the tortured man’s club group chat with joe alwyn and phoebe bridger’s ex-fiancé paul mescal. - so long, london
“but i’m not the one.” in the 1, she says “it would’ve been sweet, if it could’ve been me.” - so long, london
“at the park where we used to sit on children’s swings wearing imaginary rings” “green was the color of the grass where i used to read at centennial park.” - fresh out the slammer
“i keep recalling things we never did.” the rumors of taylor and matty healy dating even though they were only seen together a couple times - guilty as sin?
“you don’t get to tell me about sad” a line that was rumored but eventually revealed from a doctored clip of taylor and joe arguing in a restaurant - who’s afraid of little old me?
“so tell me everything’s not about me, but what if it is? they say they didn’t do it to hurt me, but what if they did?” in the reputation era taylor was isolated with no one but joe while everyone was attacking her
“you caged me and you called me crazy.” it was just taylor and joe living in private together until the pandemic ended and the eras tour began.
“They shake their heads saying, "God, help her" when I tell 'em he's my man, but your good lord doesn't need to lift a finger.” directly parallels call it what you want because in both songs she doesn’t care about what people said about them.”
“mr steal your girl, then make her cry” taylor left calvin harris when she met joe alwyn - loml
“it wasn’t sexy once it wasn’t forbidden” this ties into when the two of them kept their love affair a secret, but once folklore dropped taylor was more outspoken about their relationship - the smallest man who ever lived
and finally, “but you are what you did” directly contradicts innocent. even though they’re about two different people, he’s no longer an innocent - the smallest man who ever lived
did you know that there’s a tunnel under ocean blvd?
from 1928 to 1967, the jergins tunnel was a mode to transport citizens safely for 39 years. mosaic ceilings, painted tiles on the wall. a handmade beauty sealed up by two man-made walls. essentially a staple for beach goers through the mid 20th century, but fading from public memory as if it never existed.
the tunnel under ocean blvd was a staple, a pillar, something that facilitated so much fun and joy, only to be forgotten… we have people like that in society too. they stand there for all the years they can, spreading love and joy just for them to disappear without us noticing. and when they’re open, it’s beautiful in indescribable ways, but as soon as they close, we just move on. no one remembers them.
lana herself is a tunnel under ocean blvd. she doesn’t want to be closed, begging us not to forget her like we forgot the jergins tunnel. the tunnel itself is to be opened in the near future, to become a speakeasy. a once illicit establishment where people would partake in a life they know they shouldn’t, patrons hidden away by false walls.
there’s a metaphor in there somewhere.
the way the pjo series cast has been treated is very reminiscent of the early stranger things days and that honestly worries me a bit. now that i’m older and looking at it from the outside, some of the comments made about the cast (especially the younger cast members like Walker and Leah) are just inappropriate things to say about people their age, regardless if you’re their age too. we saw what online comments did to friendships like Millie and Finn because people couldn’t be normal and i think we should like not do that again ☠️☠️
of course i don’t want to take away the fun or act holier than thou, but please be mindful
