au overview info | smith family | curious family
- sorry for how ugly buck looks here.. my sim style never lends itself to kids. buck looks significantly better as a teenager/adult trust me 😅
- both Buck & Tank are chubby.
- my AU is based more in reality with period typical sexism/homophobia/etc as the sims world is based on our real life. for more notes on how the AU works, I reccomend reading the overview, but basically I have included some more mature elements as that is unfortunately a fact of life living in the world affected by patriarchy and colonialism, etc. for my yap segment, there will be very fleeting mentions of abuse, historical genocide, homophobia and alcoholism. please be cautious when reading.
i am basing the abuse aspect from the PSP game, as seen in Tank's secrets: "(Dark): Tank once got punished by Buzz for being 'too creative' with his face paint."
same with the smiths, i'm using these characters to convey a theme. the theme here is cycles of abuse and all that entails; abuse of people on a mass scale via patriarchal and class oppression, individual-scale abuse, and stopping that cycle of abuse. now, i've found that most people, when writing the grunts, make buzz grunt an irredeemable monster that isn't worthy of sympathy to any degree, and while i make a point in my story to emphasise that you do not have to forgive your parents for the hurt they've caused you just because they're your parents, i think it necessary to acknowledge the factors that went into shaping buzz as a person.
for example, the grunt family for decades has been intensely militaristic and strict, but this has origins in epigenetics. the grunts, in my headcanon, were initially irish immigrants who came over to america on account of the irish famine wiping out millions. the irish famine was a deliberate starvation and genocide of irish people, as the british government forced a potato-based monopoly and deliberately ignored the suffering of the irish people, continuing with their corrupt landowning policies and evicting millions of irish people. moreover, because of the mass scale of death and suffering in the grunt family all the way back in the 1840s, this caused an epigenetic change where the generations past would experience symptoms of ptsd despite not experiencing the traumatic events. this was worsened by anti-irish racism (the irish were considered non-white for a while and segregated) and then worsened by poor coping mechanisms; unequipped to handle the bone-deep trauma, most grunt men relied on alcoholism to cope and lashed out on others, and their children too – thus starting the cycle of abuse.
buzz wasn't always a mean and cruel man or the chauvinist macho gentleman that he is today. rather, as a little boy, he was considered a 'sissy' – being quick to cry and enjoying 'feminine' hobbies like playing with dolls and singing. this was often beaten out of him by his father, who resented having his son be so 'soft'. as he got older, he still retained this almost gentleness about him, which is what attracted lyla to him. they both enjoyed theatre, literature, and talking about going travelling as adults. there were moments where eugene's anger took hold of him, but for the most part, he was a pretty content man.
after his 18th birthday, he got conscripted into the military. he had trained all his life to be part of the military industry, but the reality was much more gruelling than he had expected. the reality of military life forced him to 'toughen up' (for lack of a better word), and he became cold, standoffish, and almost cruel at times. lyla was disturbed by this sudden change, but she was already pregnant with tank at the time, and in the summer, they had a shotgun wedding. lyla was too afraid of what others might say if she divorced him, and it wasn't until buck was born that she concluded she had to leave. this hatred of aliens stems from his need for a scapegoat to blame for his problems, as he perceives himself as wholly victimised.
he only begins to reflect on his behaviour during the summer of 2004, when olive attempts to bury him alive in her final act of appeasement towards the grim reaper, and johnny & ripp rescue him just before he loses oxygen. because of this near-death moment, he's forced to come to terms with how he's lived his life up until this point, how he's let his prejudices get in the way of engaging with other people and how his relationship with his children is frayed. he's unable to bear it for a while because of his stubbornness but, much like most older men, only comes around when he's elderly.
tank's upbringing is essentially an exact replica of his father's, but with a different outcome. tank knew he was gay from an early age but never spoke openly about it, as he had a great deal of shame about it because he was already being mistreated for being "feminine". his escape from his father's control was in college, where he started to explore himself. he dated almeric there, but they split up because tank was too scared to express himself, and almeric felt suffocated by this. in addition, he begins taking ballet lessons covertly and performing plays, but he quits as soon as he graduates because he feels he must "man up". tank marries ara fusili after serving in the military for a few years, but they cheat on each other frequently and divorce after spending a good number of years together and having children. in fact, they get on better as friends than they were as a couple, and they share custody of their children. following his divorce from ara, tank resumes dancing and soon establishes his own dance studio. he reconnects with almeric, they tie the knot, and almeric becomes his children's stepfather with ara still being in his life.
ripp & buck are also affected by this abuse, but both have very different ways of going about it. ripp engages in self destructive behaviour as a way to 'rebel' against their dad, whereas buck tries to stay under the radar. but, in the end, they end up becoming who they truly are, and this comes with the consequence of having to let go of their dad's hold on their lives.
YAP OVER.. HEADCANONS BELOW ↓
Eugene "Buzz" Grunt: 43. Cisgender male, heterosexual but had a 'fling' with one of his fellow soldiers back in the day. The sim equivalent of Catholic because of his Irish ancestry. Depression, Anxiety and CPTSD. Specialises in airforce presently, but when he was younger, he was in the army, fighting on land.
Theodore "Tank" Grunt: 17 -> 18. Cisgender male, gay. He was raised in a Sim-Catholic environment, but he genuinely doesn't give it much thought. Depression, Anxiety and CPTSD. Army veteran.
Ripley "Ripp" Grunt: 15. Transfeminine non-binary, bisexual. Fully atheist. A good few years younger than Ophelia and Johnny but follows them around as they're the only two 'cool people' in all of Strangetown, according to Ripp. They're sort of like her mentors in a sense, or more accurately, annoyed older siblings being forced to bring along their annoying younger sibling. Never went to college, didn't want to, rather spending their late teenage and young adult years frequenting StrangerVille's nightclubs and staying at stranger's houses in the evening because she genuinely hates staying home with her dad. Around this same time, they meet Lillith and they hit it off as they are both very similar in personality and interests, but they're both extremely firey personalities which lends itself to a very turbulent relationship as they are both so stubborn that they refuse to admit they're in the wrong. After breaking it off with Lillith, Ripp ends up crashing over at Tank's place while claiming to be 'working on his music' (note: this music would never be released until like she was in her early 30s). Looks exactly like Lyla just with brown hair. Depression & Anxiety, CPTSD with some drinking problems sprinkled in.
Buckley "Buck" Grunt: 12 -> 13. As an older teenager, trans girl & lesbian. Was in boy scouts for a while, as forced by Buzz because if she refused to do training, then atleast she would get some good outdoorsy manly values from being in boys scouts. Raised catholic like her siblings, but unlike them, still finds a tremendous amount of comfort in Christianity. She switches to a different sect of Christianity that is more accepting of LGBTQ people and engages in community work there. She also helps out at a animal shelter, sometimes fostering some of the pets. Buckley is also her father's primary caregiver, as Buzz is a good few years older when she's a teenager/young adult. Dating Jill. A lot less online than her.
I actually don't think she's a subservient housewife type at all. According to her simology, she has 0 neat points. She also has a romance aspiration, and 9 interest points in money. She was never afraid to stand up to herself, which is why she clashed so frequently with Buzz because she didn't just let him mistreat her silently. Of course, she was insecure about social status if she were to divorce him, but in their actual relationship, she stood her own ground against him.
